Marlowe Wax Injury

The bigger news here is that there is news. Not just the dreaded undisclosed lower body injury, and we never hear a word about it again, or ever see the player again. At least knowing 6 weeks is a huge step in a good direction that we are being informed.
Cannot like this post enough. Excellent take.

Fran has moved us into the 21st century from a program transparency standpoint and deserves big props for that.

I love Wax I really do and I think his football knowledge is absolutely irreplaceable and his leadership falls in the same category.

But we would be doing ourselves a disservice if we don’t recognize that Wax is a bit undersized and that was shown a couple times when he missed tackles in the first half. This is literally of no fault of his own, just pure size related.

We also can’t help but notice some of the guys behind him are a little larger.

This is an oppurtunity to step up and see what we have behind him and what our future is.

Does it suck losing Wax? 1000% yes.

Is it catastrophic and as significant as losing OG last season? Not sure, but my initial thought is that it is not. We’re going to find out.
agree. he has a "nose" for the ball and gets in a lot of tackles. But getting other guys more reps early in the season and then having wax healthy for the final stretch is kind of a blessing in disguise in my opinion.

I don't know if I agree with that first part. I re-watched the first half and was mentally keeping track of missed tackles. I don't recall #2 sticking out. I also don't think Heard, Sparrow, ZMG are any bigger. At least their listed heights and weights don't indicate that (I know those aren't an exact science).

Agree that it's a chance to see what our future is, and I'm trying to be bullish that we'll be ok, but he's the best player and leader of the defense. Everyone is really going to have to pick up their game next week. Especially Barron.

Hope it's only 6 weeks, because that means he's back and not beaten up in other parts of his body for last half of the season.

Fran may need to hit the portal for a stud LB in the offseason. Besides wax who on the roster excites you at that position? Delesauriers may be forced into early action but we can’t depend on that.

So happy for Marlowe he will be coming back and that there is a bye in those 6 weeks.

One nice thing is that SU will have another coach on the sideline because I'm sure he'll be there for his teammates to point out some nuances and tweeks during the game..

Just an update, on the Kyle McCord show today, Kyle said Marlowe is doing well. He's able to walk in the boot with no scooter now. Thats a good update.

Certainly helps the dumb sports-management-brain-me assume we're still on the 6 week timeline lol

Has anyone identified whether his injury was to the fibula or tibia?

I think I heard it was both the fibia and the tabula...but, it has been a long time since I took anatomy, so I could be mistaken/misinformed. Maybe mea tabula rasa:cool:

I'm curious because I fractured my fibula (playing baseball) when I was about the same age as Marlowe and it took 6 weeks to completely heal. The tibia is the larger bone and might take longer depending on the type of fracture.

A bad break of a tibia usually requires surgery.

Also often a break of both requires surgery as it needs extra support. I have a friend who is going through this exact same thing right now. If he is already putting weight on it, I doubt it is both. She is 8 weeks with no weight after surgery. And hers was a clean break. Just plates and pins for extra healing support.

Yeah, I was just playing with the mispronunciation I’ve often heard of the two bones, and mixing in a little Latin humor to top it off. Or, it was a failed attempt at humor all around. That’s why I am a doctor and not a comedian, I guess.

It's way funnier now that I know you weren't suffering from horrible topographical errors. Or malus scripturae.

Considering it's his foot/ankle wrapped I'm guessing neither. I'm guessing ankle sprain.

Agree. I believe he had the highest PFF grade of any of the defensive players.

He can't get back quick enough. We get away with stopping the run with a funky alignment that GT was completely unprepared for. That won't happen again.

Fortunately Stanford does not run the ball well. Their QB is their biggest running threat. It will be interesting to see if we stay with the 3-3-5 alignment or go back to the 4-3 on Friday night.

I have no idea what we are going to do on defense.

Either stack the box and/or put a spy on Lamson Samson. *

* If Fran says he’s Samson, he’s Samson.
/gavel’d.

Our defense is gonna D-lilah him up.

Force him to (try to) beat us thru the air.

I hope that he takes this year off.

Pretty sure that’s not an option.

I know he was ready to go to NFL/leave school last year.

Sometimes you’re just ready to move on to your next phase in life no matter what that is.

I think we will be blessed if he can make it back this year and we can watch him close out the season.

I could be wrong of course but

The best we can hope for for both the team and Wax is a timely recovery, a great second half of the season, and getting drafted next spring.

Wax returning and playing at full speed will be like that cliche of "Wax will be our deadline trade" that rarely actually works out with injured players in baseball. (At least not for the Red Sox)

Our depth at linebacker might be getting tested by that point in the season, and an infusion of talent at the top of the chart would be amazing.

Proving he can come back from a major injury and excel would really help his draft stock as well.

It would be great if it did work out for us.

To be fair, the ankle bones (malleoli) are the bottom of the fibula ("outside ankle") and tibia ("inside ankle"). I know that YOU know that, but before someone comes at you saying you were "wrong," I thought a little clarification would be helpful.

You mean Ashton Daniels right? Lamson will play but he isn't the starter
