I have seen numerous discussions about Marrone (to be honest I don't have an opnion either way right now).

Marrone doesn't have the off-field baggage, however Petrino would be a definite upgrade as far as football matters are concerned.

Basically, am just curious at what people think. I think Petrino would take any job he could get right now and thus is available. And for those who say Petrino would never come to Syracuse, for arguement's sake let's say he would.

But for discussions sake, who would you prefer and why?

Should Syracuse stick with Marrone? Why?

Should Syracuse dump Marrone and get Petrino? Why?

I don't want a doucher like Petrino. I'm willing to talk some coaches with "baggage", but not his type of baggage.

petrino would not make it through 1 season at syracuse. literally, he would leave in the wee hours of the night to go to auburn when they fire chizik in the middle of next year.

this isnt a guess or a pipe dream. this opinion is basically FACT.

Why the love for Petrino? Talk about baggage.

who the cares about baggage. what, do you guys think no SU coach has ever slammed a co-ed? Please. get over yourselves.

Your hiring petrino because he runs great offenses and wins. Dougie Marrone can stay on and teach petrino life skills all day. Problem solved.

We are investing millions of dollars into the program. We deserve better than this.

if dougie were a stock, we'd all be shorting him right now.

I think there is a big difference between just "slamming" a co-ed and "slamming" a co-ed then giving her a very good paying job in your office, then lying about it to your employers.

I guess all you guys would never ever hire Rick Pitino if he was every available and the only job he'd want is to follow Jimmy as HC of the Orange. Moral police, please go away. Belichick, banged his secretary...i'd take him tomorrow.

My only issue with Petrino was the way he has left jobs. if he was upfront about that, i'd take him in a second.

not sure why people are afraid to talk about potential replacements. If we lose to Pitt and Rutgers (two games we'll be underdogs in i bet), we're looking at 1-5. Let that soak for a second. I'm rooting against it b/c these losses are demoralizing but we have to be upfront about replacements if this thing unravels quickly (and there is a scenario it does).

I think Marrone is doing good things on the recruiting trail. I think he's re-building relationships, and he seems to be getting better athletes. I would like to see him turn the corner, because I think another rebuild, with the time it would take to install a new system, have a coach have to re-establish all new recruiting connections, etc., would be a set-back for the program, especially as it embarks on the ACC.

That said, Doug's got to loosen up a bit and he's got to make the game more fun for the players. Whatever happened to Shaffer and the defensive hit of the week winning a big bone? We never hear about that anymore. I'm not thrilled with the wins and losses and the product on the field, but we really need him to be the guy to turn it around.

If this season turns to , and then we go through another 2 or 3 win season next year with a rookie QB, then, geez, you've got to reassess where you're at. And I think someone made a point recently about not hiring another NFL coach for the position. We need someone with college experience, if we do have to make a change.

Thank you!! That is kind of response I was looking for.

My opinion with new coaches, in general, is that it takes them at least 3-4 years to get the program set to their style. First, recruiting...where they recruit their type of players and the players from the previous coach graduate/leave the program. This can take at least 3-4 years. So you figure by years 5-6 at the latest you should see how that coaches system is going to work. I am afraid for Marrone that he only has another year or two left at the most to prove he can do it and that huis system works. When schools get rid of a coach in three years or less, they aren't really giving that coach a chance to work. Same thing goes for the pros as well.

I know! Tressel, while he does have baggage I can live with it. Not to mention he has had much more success then Petrino

I think we all need to just relax for 3-4 more games before speculating on Marrone's future.. If we lose all 4, then it's apparent that he just isn't going to be able to turn this around, even with the talent he's accumulating. If we win 2-3 of those games, it's more apparent that he's turning it around. This is a pivotal time because he has to convince the players to rally. It's happened many times in sports. Hell Tom Coughlin was rumored to be on the hot seat last year, then he turns around and wins the Super Bowl with a 9-7 team. We're a little premature to start speculating so early in the season.

Here is my opinion... Can we please ban any posts with the name Petrino in them going forward?
I second that.
The Petrino discussion deserves the "What if Napoleon had a B-52 during the Battle of Waterloo?" award.

I am torn right now on how I feel about Marrone. I like some recruiting things that have been done but if it doesn't translate to the field than what the hell good does it do. I am not sold he can't coach but things need to change around this program for me. I am tired of seeing a losing team. I know we don't have the squad that an SEC school has but I would like to see us blow a few teams out. It has been almost a year since that WVU win and that was the when I thought we turned the corner. I would have to say depending on how the rest of this season goes will determine if I would like Maroone to stay. I was not one of the people that had us losing only 2-3 games this year if we are 7-5 I will be happy.

On a side note I was thinking about what would happen if Marrone does medicore this year and bad next and on that same note if Schiano has two terrible years at TB and he is fired what would everyone feel about Syracuse hiring him.

I think reason #1 for not having him around is that he would leave us like a prom date as soon as anything popped up. He's done it at LVille and the falcons, no question he would bone us too. He, Edsall and Graham have left previous programs with class.

That is a reason, but why is he even being thought of? It is NEVER going to happen.

Gross is still likely bullish on Marrone besides maybe some outside selling pressures, so you might want to stay away from short selling just yet.

I really hope we don't have to go down the road of a coaching change. But if we do, hiring the right guy won't necessarily mean as long of a road as you describe. Just look at the team we played on Saturday. He's in his 2nd year, look at the positive change already.

I hope the positives from the first couple games show their face again starting next Friday. And the negatives from those games are fixed, in some cases just to the point of not being a disaster (like punt return coverage). And that it means the wins start now. But if this season spirals out of control and we have to make the move, we really need to get the next hire right. It's a much more attractive job than it was in the past given conference affiliation, $, etc.

people make mistakes. lets be part of his redemption story. its the american way.

For those who think this thread is dumb, don't read it and/or reply. This is a discussion board, wherenot only do you discuss the what is happening now and/or the realistic but also the what if and/or somewhat unrealistic.

It kind of reminds me of people railing against a particular TV show or music. If you don't like it do watch or listen. You do have a choice!!

Yes they do and I do believe in second chances to a point. At what point do you determine someone does or doesn't deserve a second chance? Or does everyone deserve a second chance?

Obviously Petrino is a better football coach than Marrone, but I can't imagine he'd ever want to come here and I can't imagine we'd ever want him to.

Not because if his personal life. But more because he hasn't been the type of guy who's proven to leave a program in good shape when he bails for the next big job. If SU is going to be a stop on a resume, then they better be sure that it can be passed down to the next guy, like Boise. Petrino left Louisville in shambles.
