Matthew Bergeron: Falcons

Rock Solid for Berg. While nice to joke about being Punter U; I wouldn't mind stringing some O-Line draft picks in a row.

44th pick is perfect.
Now bring back Sterling!

Yes. I didn’t know - just looked it up. 2013.
Oh you already found it. Posted it before reading. Was sort of easy for me since he is in AZ and I am good friends with Jared West who was drafted same year, is good friends with Pugh, and moved here after meeting his GF when visiting Pugh. So I hear about Pugh all of the time...

Post-Draft Analysis

This registers as a surprise trade up and selection for Atlanta, given the team's solid front five on the offensive line. Bergeron has positional flexibility, but the Falcons are locked in at both tackle and guard spots. There's no doubting the value of Bergeron in this spot after the run on offensive tackles in Round 1, but from a team needs standpoint, this is a surprise. -- Matt Miller
Suspect they view him as a potential LT replacement in year two. He can slot in and play some guard this year and either take over there in a year or be LT given age.

I wonder if any of those guys that are "locked in" are potentially being looked at to be moved. Are any of them slated to be a big cap hit? It's weird that you would move up to draft a guy early in the second round if you don't plan to play him.

Other analysts say talent to be day 1 starter.

If that's the case, he's probably a bargain compared to the guy he'd be replacing. One of those guys may need to worry about finding a realtor.

It’s almost guaranteed you will have injuries of some sort on the O line. You have to have depth in the NFL.

I am super stoked for Matt. I can't deny I wish he was able to be plugged into a roster that felt more ready made to win, but hopefully he can be the start of the turnaround for a team that has struggled for a while. Nice to be wanted.

Do you draft early in the second round for depth?

At O-line you definitely do. He is not John Hannah.
Maybe if you're set at every other position, but do you pay a guy $9 million to be available in case there's an injury? How much do most back up olinemen make?

Atlanta was 3rd in the league in Rushing last year. It's their strength and they just added the premier RB in this draft. They also have Pitts at TE. This makes sense to run more heavy packages with an extra OL as more teams have been doing that emphasize the run. Having essentially 6 starting quality OL is a good move for them beyond just having depth. Plus Pitts isn't out there to be an above average blocking TE.
