Meathead Football

I thought he was running a proset. Last year he had a lot of tight end plays and a good receiver who also got a lot of plays. I know Brown was hurt but he just didn't move the needle for me. With the kind of line play they had and NFL running backs, I would think a QB would like it back there. He never got the right guy to take them over the top.

They were never close to the top.

EDIT: That’s why they fired their coach.

They were foolish for firing their coach. He had a very high level O and D line development program in place and were always getting tremendous running backs. If he had Hasselbeck or a gut like him, they could have beat Clemson.

great post. Fans want a mad scientist who can just scheme their way to 8-4 seasons, just doesn’t happen that way. If we eventually change coaches it will be because of your last sentence.

culture and developing players is 90% of what will lead to success at Syracuse. It’s still not easy but that’s what you need
Whether it is "culture and developing players" or scheme or play calling or finding gems among mid-level 3 stars -- the implication is that SU can do it better than our rivals. Not clear why people believe that.

Success has not been easy (as you wrote) and not consistent. When it has come, there have been certain factors (taking our 2012 and 2018 teams as examples). A very capable QB, who is well above average in the league. Strength in both lines, with a couple of candidates for all-league honors. Solid running to balance passing. Good fortune to keep our leading players healthy, as we aren't likely to have a depth of talent.

I read their boards a lot. Their fans were frustrated with it. They have ties to get Catholic school QB's across the country. They were resistant to playing in that offense. Kids want to throw the ball now. Dont want to hand it off 60 times a game. Thats why Wisconsin doesnt usually get the studs to go there. I actually didnt think their QB's were that bad. Brown was solid and Towles was too. Hafley just got a 4 star QB commit. He knows they will throw the ball there now. Big reason why Jurkovec transferred there too.

Regardless of scheme you need culture, player development and leadership. Plain and simple. That is what Syracuse needs to do better than our opponents to be successful. I think all 3 are pretty bad at Syracuse right now. It can get better under the current staff but not going to be easy

The implication is that what will work at Syracuse regardless of who is ever hired. Again, I don't care who is ever hired here they will not have top 25 recruiting classes, it will not happen, IMO. Thus, the path to success is player development. Recruiting with purpose not stars and fan board accolades. They tell you that is what they do but not everyone is good at it. We will never out talent the majority of the ACC.

No magic wands, no great salesman, no mad scientist, etc

Good points.

Wouldn't the AD have enough influence to talk with him and explain that point of view? Something like, " Steve, this is what the top young QB's want today. You really need to change your approach somewhat or the people that want you out of BC will have their way".

What's the quote about most coaches? They would rather lose their way than win yours. I think Dazzler definitely falls into this category as does Dino as do most.

You know Dazzler and DINO have some of those old BIKE coaching shorts around somewhere

He needed to wear them last night. Boise beat them 52-21. Boise had 14 players out due to CV19.

Not sure he will find the lineman out there that he needs to play Dazzle ball. I see his style and message better suited for the Northeast. That said, Dino kind of feels more like a West coast guy here in good old CNY

These are Anthony Brown's career stats. Almost 300 attempts as a fr and soph. that doesn't look like a run, run, pass offense to me. He got hurt in the 6th game last year and that derailed BC's season. You could see he was improving every year and could well have a big year as a senior, for Oregon. It was a personality thing, so they are setting their program back to square 1. Sounds familiar.

Good observation. Looks like they threw more than people think. Perhaps one of Browns reason's for leaving was to get into a system more suitable for his skillset? As of right now, I don't see any set back. They got a 4 star QB from ND that's pretty good. They are 5-3 and already won 4 conference games. Addazio has never won more than 4 conference games in his 7 years there.

A lot of programs would win more with NFL QBs. I do think OL/DL strength is the core thing and if you can do that without being one of the elite schools, you have a leg up. Problem for Addazzio was Meathead philosophy.

My football acumen is minimal.

But, I am convinced that working under center gives the QB and the offense an advantage.

It allows the QB to hide the ball - to use play action more effectively - and to keep the defense off balance.

I also feel that it is much more interesting to watch.

I look forward to the day when OCs go back to it.

And, as to two backs putting too many defenders in the box, having two wide-outs, a tight end we actually use and a back who can catch a pass coming out of the backfield should be enough to keep any defense honest. The shotgun started out as a third down offense. You could still switch to it. But a base offense should be balanced and versatile and the two back offense is more of those things. Lenny Moore used to catch 40-50 passes a year. Nykeim and Courtney have caught 24 balls this year.

Minimal understanding of spread offense and way too much familiarity with meathead football leads to some opinions that are probably biased, IMO

How many teams have two running back offenses as a base in their scheme? Most teams are multiple formations and personnel. I rarely see any team with two running backs in the backfield. Most spread teams ( in pistol formation or not) have two back sets. That’s can a TE/HB/FB with a TB. What do you think Elmore was doing the previous 3 years?

I think SA had them pointed towards this year as a big year. A first year coach can keep that going but after that it comes down to his guys. That being said, they needed the refs on their side to beat Syracuse, and the cameramen, with the ACC's blessing no doubt.

They should just ask if it’s something they don’t know. I get how people can be skeptical of things they don’t understand. We all can be stubborn to things that are different. Believe me, I have my challenges with that working with kids. Lol.

Lol. I get it, you like the guy. I like him too. I’m just not idolizing him like you are. There are things that he does that are not smart. Believe me. I’ve sat in sessions with both coaches before. Hafley is very smart and motivated. Only time will tell what he does with the program. I hope we kick his ass the rest of the way though

For the record I'm not against the spread or any other kind of offense. The important thing is you have to have an offensive coordinator who can win the chess match against the opposing teams defensive coordinator, regardless of the scheme.

I think ND is going to throw them for a loop. I don't think in the south or the midwest they care about personality as in the northeast, they care about winning.

ND just might do that. They are the more superior team. . At the same time BC always seem to play them tough. Not sure if they will this weekend though. I really like their offensive line play. I like their scheme in general. They spread the defense out and run down hill run plays right at you. When you commit to stop that they throw over the top of you.

I agree. Its a chess match. I just think everyone runs spread because it allows you to still run the ball against bigger stronger D lines. Plus your OLB's can't just sit in the box and play run. They have to cover slot's and TE's. Allows you to take advantage of 1v1 match ups from the outside Wr or the slot position. Teams like LSU and Bama that were traditional power run teams have gone to it so they can keep up with scoring. Their defenses can't stop them like they use to. Offensive coordinators are getting more and more creative.

As most of you who read my posts know I am a huge proponent of Syracuse adopting a triple option offense. I think this is the best chance for Syracuse, with its northeast geography, recruiting limitations, and history of great RB’s have to succeed in the ACC.

This article affirms my belief that a few of the bottom feeder P5 programs will go to this style soon. “If I was coaching today,” Barry Switzer says, “I would line up in the spread and I would run three-back option plays out of the spread. I would have misdirection motion. I would have the passing game off of it, too – but I would make people defend the option game first.” Army showed the way but Power Five schools still won't embrace the triple option

Not what Hough could do. Again if nobody is doing it, would that be an advantage? Imagine dealing with both Hough and Tucker while covering Harris and Queeley on the outside and Hackett or Benson over the middle - and haivng a QB who could run it himself!
