Nathan Hines (in white shirt)

Another Day, Another Preferred Walk-On. SU Adds Long Snapper Nathan Hines to 2014 Class (PS; Mink)

Syracuse is not done building depth among its specialists.

Last week, it added walk-on kicker/punter Evan Jakubowski as a back-up to punter Riley Dixon.

Now the school recently received a commitment from long snapper Nathan Hines, aone-time commit to Maryland, according to a report from CuseNation.com, a Syracuse football recruiting website.

Hines, a 6-foot-5, 245-pounder from Catonsville High School in Maryland, will not be on scholarship. Like Jakubowski, Hines can start practicing with the team in August.

More on Why Hines Selected Syracuse Over Maryland (Kickology)

'They gave me an opportunity to play,' Hines said. 'Where at Maryland I was going to be a backup. The coaches at Syracuse were real nice. Not hating on the Maryland coaches, they were nice too. I just felt more at home at Syracuse.'

Brad McKinney, the Next Great SU Lax Midfielder? (Watertown Daily Times; Sorensen)

Brad McKinney didn’t pick up a lacrosse stick until he was in eighth grade, but once he did it was full speed ahead for the versatile athlete.

One moment in particular drew him to the sport when he was attending a Syracuse University lacrosse game with current Watertown teammate Eric Soderquist back in the spring of 2010 when both were in middle school.

“I saw Brian Megill lay a kid out along the sidelines right in front of me,” said McKinney, now a senior midfielder for the Cyclones. “From there, I always wanted to play lacrosse and go to Syracuse. I was like ‘I want to play lacrosse and I want to make it to the big stage.’”

Motivated by what he watched at the college level, McKinney went out for lacrosse and played that season for the junior varsity team.

McKinney has never looked back and at the varsity level emerged as one of the premier midfielders in the north country, if not in Section 3.

“And I’ve kept this going and I still want to be on that stage and be the best player I can be,” said McKinney, who is headed for Syracuse to play Division I lacrosse. “Everyone dreams about being at the top of their game and I just try and get better. That’s what drives me.”...

Upstate NY Pride: Union College (Enrollment 2,200) Defeats Minnesota (Enrollment 50,000) to Win NCAA Hockey National Championship (Bangor Daily News; Sports Xchange)

Union (N.Y.) College, with an enrollment of just 2,200, captured its first NCAA men’s ice hockey championship, defeating perennial powerhouse Minnesota 7-4 before 18,742 at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.

It was the first time any Union team had played for an NCAA title since the 1929 men’s lacrosse championship.

It was the highest-scoring hockey final since 1997.

The Dutchmen (32-6-4) entered the Frozen Four as the second-highest-scoring team in the nation, averaging 3.70 goals a game. It was the 23rd time this season Union scored at least four goals.

The Golden Gophers (28-7-7) were searching for their sixth national championship...
