Monroe Madness Day

Didn’t hear much about Mintz. Did he make assists?

One guy I noticed in both videos is Carey hustling. He was away from the basket in Bunch’s bucket and ran in and was ready for a put back. Then he runs the floor for that fast break bucket. He’s a great mover for 6’11” and can run like a deer.
Carey is going to surprise a lot of people. Just needs to get stronger.

He is going to end up being better than Clingan.

Maybe this season
Maybe. But Clingan is already close to his ceiling -- he's a big, strong kid who has been coached his whole life how to use his size.

Carey is a string bean with much higher upside, but he needs to get stronger. The lone criticism I've heard is that he's getting pushed around, still needs to acclimate to playing college ball [as most frosh bigs do]. But once he gets a little stronger and adds some weight, the sky is the limit. He's very skilled.

Yup. I had posted those videos back in May or June. Needs to get stronger but moves well. If he has any outside shot, he could possibly grow into a stretch four.
You've been calling this since we landed Carey. He's versatile, not just some stiff that we took a flyer on. Will be interesting to see how his career unfolds.

Yeah Carey is no stiff

Seems like he more than has the necessary mobility to play some 4 just curious if his skillset is far enough along ( not necessarily for major minutes of course). That explosiveness around the rim at the 4 position - it's been a while.

So given we don't have a lot to work with yet just a few reports and MM last night it's hard to gage much of anything but one thing that stands out is that I'm thinking Copeland might not be spending all season catching splinters after all. Massive confidence and personality it seems with this kid not to mention the entertainment aspect his game brings. If he is defending hard and has made major inroads with his shot... that is a major development for this year's team given his size and the open questions around the forward spots.

Add in Bunch showing out shooting the rock and well... I'm really looking forward to see this group get to work for real. Very cautiously and moderately optimistic for the time being.

Cliftonpark has some good info about his skills.

Yeah I recall those workout videos. That was all we had with Fab too and his turned out to be a good indicator/omen.

Another note is go look at those again then recent clips plus from scrimmage and he definitely has added some more muscle to his frame. Still too skinny but noticeably better than then.

Not that I remember, except maybe a few where he passed around the perimeter to someone who made an outside shot.

I went there mostly to see him (and Benny), yet I don't remember a single play he made.

Donna mentioned he looked good in midrange but it was a one liner comment in her article.

I think we have a few guys better than advertised, but it’s on JB to stretch out the rotation. Based on past history I have a difficult time seeing him play more than 3 guards. I think the best Copeland can hope for is something similar to minutes MCW saw in 2012.

I think if he can defend and is committed on that end and he has made massive strides with his shot that he could have a better chance at time vs MCW but that's the logical argument not factoring the JB impact.

Well Jesse and Joe aren’t going to “share the minutes”, nor should they. So you have 10 guys for 3 spots.

Joe's 34 min a game carrying over would be a win. That's still plenty of minutes but also some reprieve as well. I expect it will be more like 37 but 34 to me is the sweet spot.

This was an incredibly enjoyable experience. We had CTO-level seats at Dollar General prices. The players and coaches were available for pictures and autographs. I got selfies with almost every player. The players were high-fiving kids during warmups. The dunks during warmups were better than the dunk contest. Carey is a freak athlete and does not move like a baby giraffe. All of the freshmen were putting down big dunks, having fun, doing alley-oops , and seem to have camaraderie. Copeland was the standout for me during warmups. He is taller and more solid than I expected, and he could possibly play forward.

The three point contest was a lot of fun. All of the guys struggled on the first rack. Taylor went first and hit 10 of 15 threes. He has a good stroke and quick release. He hit 2-3 jump shots during the scrimmage as well. I think he is going to get a good amount of minutes. Symir went second in the three point contest, which surprised me. He hit 8 out of 15 after a slow start. Both Mintz and Symir both ran the offense well, but neither really stood out during the scrimmage.

Bunch hit 11 of 15 in the contest. His release is a little slower than Taylor but is slightly taller. He played well in the scrimmage. He is fast with decent handle. I think he is going to get decent minutes.

Girard hit 10 of 15. He got hot after missing a few in the beginning. His misses were in an out. Joe stood out in the scrimmage. Initially, Copeland was guarding Girard and shutting him down. Copeland looked like the best defender out there when they played man to man in the first 10 minutes. Joe missed his first three, and I am pretty sure he hit all of his remaining shots while barely hitting the net. He made at least 3 threes and was not chucking it.

Jesse picked up where he left off prior to his injury last year if not better. He owned Carey on offense and made everything within 10 feet through contact. Carey is going to have to put on some weight to contend with ACC centers.

With Benny out, it is really hard to get a read on the others. JBA and Hima played some at the 4 with Benny out. No one was subbed out other than the bigs. Mintz had a breakaway floater that JBA blatantly goaltended, and JBA gave a funny "no way" type expression after the goaltend was called. JBA later had a big block. Copeland also had a breakaway and set JBA up for an off the backboard dunk. I think the only guaranteed starters are Edwards and Girard. Mintz and Williams will likely get the nod in the beginning of the season. The young guys are playing hard and are hungry. I hope JB spreads the minutes around. JB was smiling throughout the dunk contest and most of the night.

Side note - the women's team looks real good. Dyaisha is the real deal. Hyman and Rice hit a lot nice jump shots. There were a lot more substitutions and team swaps during the women's scrimmage. Coach Jack has a nice squad

On behalf of all out-of-towners, THANK YOU for this write-up summary!

Wanted to post this earlier but had important dad things to do today, an leaves to rake.

Was a good turn out at Blue Cross last night. Matt Park did as good of a job MCing the event as one could ask for.

Overall the events were well paced with the three point shooting being the best event of the night. My two young ones were well entertained for the 2 hour event. Also good to see/have the open vendors and beer options. Cheers!

For the 3 point event, Justin Taylor has a really smoth shot and looks to be one of the better shooters on the team. Chris Bunch ended up winning it and has a bit of a flat looking shot, but if it goes in it all counts the same. Joe is Joe and missed some early shots that put him behind. Joe also looks to have slimmed down a bit and his shot is just sooooo effortless.

The dunk contest was terrible...nothing more to be said or learned from that event.

The scrimmage gave a good look at the length this team has. Backline is a bit small in size, but their length and quickness could bring back some of the traps that were a common event back in 2010 - 2013. Another interesting take away for me was that Gerry did all of the "coaching." Jim would be on the floor behind the team huddles and let Gerry fo his thing.

The most impressive player of the night was Quadir Coppland. Damn...he is a player. Not extremely explosive, but there is just something on how he plays. All of the freshmen have some really good potential. Judah seemed to be pressing the whole night, but you can see he wants to be the Alpha on the team. Symir, Jesse did their things, and Joe played off the ball the whole night. He seems better off playing off screens and setting up for a quick shot or pass. Peter Cary...he has some bounce. Needs to put on 20 lbs as he was pushed around a bit, but can alter shots. Also has a good jumper form 15 out.

Benny didn't play and it will be interesting to see how he fits in.

Overall, this is a young team but one that has some good, young, potential. I left very impressed. Cuse will struggle against the more physical teams, but they can roll out 4 players that can spread the floor and let Symir or Judah penitrate.

I think Copeland is going to be real good by next year if not this year. He is physical and reminds me of Brandon Triche. He hit a three but has room for improvement on his shot. Before we picked up Mintz, I was high on Copeland and thought he would get a good amount of minutes.
