Moore to Bills per BuffaloBills.com

addition by subtraction. there are lots of great WR coaches out there. Shafer can add a great coach on the offensive side of the ball who doubles as a great recruiter.

That's uncalled for.

Guy is great alum and rep. He didn't need to come here when he did. He did the program a favor.

I hope his departure was known to our WR recruits before they signed. I'd hate to think they were coming to SU believing that Moore was going to coach them only to find out he was leaving.

I don't think they came here for Rob.

This seems like a good thing for you guys. He's obviously got strong coaching skills, but this is a chance for an upgrade. To be perfectly frank, having a WR coach who doesn't like/isn't good at recruiting is a major opportunity lost. I mean, you almost can't afford to have any position coach not be at least a competent recruiter, but WR coach especially. That's usually not a position where you need a guy with 20 years of experience and expertise, where you just bite the bullet and bring on a sub-par recruiter. Sometimes you just have to deal with it in a quality OL coach, QB coach or coordinator, but RB and WR coaches generally need to be able to get after it on the trail.

Should be interesting to see if you replace him with somebody from a more prestigious job than Phoenix Junior College. I know that's kind of deceiving for a lot of reasons, but still. Should be interesting to see where they go with this. One direction would to be bring someone in with connections in the Northeast and NYC area. Other option would be to bring someone in from an SEC staff that knows how to really get after recruiting and put him in charge of your recruiting program and count on them to make those connections.

I don't follow the coaching ranks to that level, but I'd be at least looking for guys that came off the support staff of Alabama, LSU, UF, FSU, OSU under Urban maybe, and are in their first job at a small school somewhere. The recruiting machines in place at those schools matter (as much as it's funny to laugh at Addazio at BC).

I don't think they came here for Rob.
The only thing I will say is that he accompanied GM on the recruiting trail the last couple of weeks and I remember McDonald tweeting something to the effect that having Rob along is very impressive to the recruits.

what's uncalled for, saying addition by subtraction? maybe that's a little over the top but the fact is the staff can be improved now.

maybe he accompanied them to shoot them straight an advise in person he was leaving?

Yeah that.

Improved in one aspect, might not be in another.

It looks like Shafer wasn't in a hurry to get rid of him, considering he was such a liability, weird that.

Just heard on the radio from Shafer, Marrone asked Shafer for permission. Shafer granted permission and after looking at the job Moore came back and said he wanted to take it. The deal wasn't sealed until today apparently so the recruits didnt know.

He did say McDonald would take the WRs and they would look to find the best person for the empty spot. Unsure if he meant McDonald will coach the WRs permanently or the new coach will be a WR coach.

The host asked about whether the recruits will be upset. He said the recruits committed to a Syracuse Univ education not a certain coach. It's a business, yadda yadda yadda.
Syracuse football: Scott Shafer says George McDonald to take over as wide receivers coach for Rob Moore

Congrats to SU Great Rob Moore for his position with the NFL Buffalo Bills! He is and always will be a great ambassador for SU! #congrats

Yeah, that alumni thing isn't working for hoops either.

sorry but we'll see how it works after Boeheim is gone. My biggest issue with it is that when it doesn’t work out it makes cutting ties very hard to do and messy. An alumnus might be allowed to stay longer than he should thus further plummeting that program.

I don’t have a huge problem with assistants but what if the non-alum HC wanted to fire the alum assistant coach? It’s messy and upsets people. Shoot we saw Dan Conley take a hit – fired by another alumnus – which was a bit awkward and pissed a lot of people off.

Lacrosse is a completely different animal so it’s silly to even go there.

But one off examples are even sillier. So JB succeeded but how did Daugherty do down in Carolina?

Oh and by the way Dcuse - so much for Hickey going pro.

No need to make sweeping generalizations, but this certainly can be a win-win for all parties involved. I like Moore and I'm happy for him, but he likely wasn't happy out there on the trail and no one likes to do a job they don't enjoy. Lets all move on.

Too bad Hafley landed at the Bills before this all happened...he would have been a perfect fit if he was still on the beach.

I really, really, really want someone who can get us involved in Jersey. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out and Shafer tends to hire people he's comfortable with, over someone who perhaps fits a certain need / niche.

I think this was mutual all the way around.

Good luck to Rob Moore, I'd guess he's a great fit.

McDonald has primarily been a WR coach prior to coming here, so I'd assume he can step in, although sometimes I worry about coordinators managing double duty. Especially for someone who has only had 1 year in the OC role and is such a prominent figure for us in recruiting.

Will be interesting to see what we do with the other position coach, or if this was a way of getting raises. Either way, seems orchestrated, I'm sure Shafer and Marrone were both up front about it.

Can Schiano coach receivers? I kid, I kid.

Our offensive coordinator is one of the best wr coaches in the nation! Hire a coach that can recruit his ass off productive day done

I would have thought they'd go with another close friend from the Midwest. But after listening to Shafer yesterday, I think he goes "fit" first, then northeast recruiting ties.

I wonder if they couldn't hire a ST coach that has also been a WR coach who could assist McDonald. Then if it is evident that McDonald is trying to wear to many hats this coach could be moved into the WR coach position full time.

I have my fingers crossed.

I also thought about maybe someone on the DL to insulate against Daoust leaving if he gets a DC job next year. But maybe ST/DB would be best, since we have so many young guys coming in at DB and we did seem to be "confused" in coverage at times last year. Maybe split CB and S.

Congrats and best wishes to Rob Moore.
While i wish Moore good luck in Buffalo I can't honestly say this a loss for the Cuse football program. I've seen far too may receivers unable to get off the LOS without being tied up causing the QB to be sacked or forced to tuck and run for a loss. In addition I don't recall a single recruit saying they came here because of Moore.
