More reminiscing...Doug Logan

Bee here when you leave,Bee here when you get back! "The Bee Crew"

I do remember seeing that now! That's just awesome. Anybody hurt? WTH????
Bee’s stung him?? What was Bee’s doing there?

Was never a huge fan of Logan though he definitely is better than Park. Logan seemed to be the master at unnecessary emphasis and enthusiasm ant times in a game when it was not called for.

I think it was the Liberty Bowl in 1996 when he uttered one of the most odd things I’ve ever heard a broadcaster say. Describing how high up they were in the stadium:

“The players on the field look like ants. But we know they’re not ants.”

Bizarre

Doug is a member at the golf course I work at. My Orange fandom spans the years when he was the Voice of the Orange. He is very engaging and has some great stories from back in the day. I really enjoy talking with him. Brings me back to the glory years. He is a Purdue grad and is still sore from the game at the Dome a few years ago! Lol

He was great.

Jake C made a huge mistake in inadvertently forcing him to walk.

And he knew it.

What were the circumstances of Logan leaving? I never knew the back story

He was trying to live a peaceful life, when some bad men came to town. Long story short, Logan got mad. And you don't want Logan to get mad. He took care of those men, but the town was scared. it was time for him to move on and try to find peace in another small town. But, somehow bad men seem to find Logan, no matter where he tries to hide.

Sounds more like a early treatment for a Quentin Tarantino script than circumstances surrounding Logan's leaving.

Living in NJ, I never really hear the basketball broadcast. I listened to some of the Georgetown game on SiriusXM and spent the entire 20 minutes in the car trying to figure out where “between the circles” was on a basketball court. I don’t mind the little bit of Park I’ve heard do football. I found him hard to follow doing hoops. I was a big Doug Logan fan.

What about Bill O'Donnel and then Joel Mariness? I grew up listening to these guys and never will forget some of their great calls on games. Sometimes pretty funny, especially Mariness against UCLA in 1967.

Who can ever forget his, "There's a loose pig on the 5!"

When he did WSYR TV 3 Sports, on Friday nights and if SU was playing on Saturday, he'd write his predicted score on his palms with magic marker and expose them during the report.

OT, but WTH: He also came to my house a few times when he was dating my mother. That distinctive voice amazed me.

Joel: "He climbed the invisible ladder to get that rebound, came down with frost on his elbows!"

Also remember he'd use props for his tv predictions, showing a small toy battleship floating in a tub getting bombed by an orange to represent the outcome of a game vs Navy.

There'll never be another Joel.

Guess we are getting old, a good thing, I remember being very disappointed when Joel Mariness was let go.

I told these before but it's worth it to tell them again.

One time Joel wanted to say that a pass was 'incomplete' when a diving defender caught it. He shouted "Incomception!"

He was to broadcast a game in Rochester. The guy whose job it was to hook up the broadcast through the phone lines didn't show up so Joel had to call the station though a phone and describe the game. He could only see one basket from where he was so would describe how Rochester scored, then say "Syracuse scored! from the overhead scoreboard, (it was the 70's - no video board). Half way through the second half the phone guy showed up and told home to get off the phone because he had to use it for the broadcast "because there's going to be game here tonight". They broadcast the argument and scuffle between Joe and the phone guy, which was much more interesting than the game.

Bill was the Voice of the Orange from I think 1953-65. Joel was his assistant and started doing some games in 1965. He was the voice of the Orange through 1979. They brought in Doug Logan, (although I remember Joel doing a telecast of the Dome opening game in a tuxedo) from 1980-98. Dave Pasche served from 1999-2002. Mark Johnson got the job for one year, 2002-03 and got to announce our basketball championship, then moved on. It's been Matt Park since.

Bill O'Donnell worked in the Baltimore Orioles radio booth from 1966 until dying of cancer in 1982. He would always end his broadcasts by saying "Good Night Sport'. He was probably the best of all.

Joel describing Hal Cohen bringing the ball up the court 'with the Groucho Marks dribble"! Also remember the call in show after the game and the pranksters getting Dave Cohen livid, it was hilarious.

It wasn't an outcome either side wanted. It hurt Doug, and it hurt SU Athletics. But "inadvertently forcing him to walk" is an interesting way to frame those negotiations.
