My Goodness, this is heartbreaking

I will never understand the selfishness of someone who can take so many lives. I feel its selfish to committ suicide because surely there are people who love you and will suffer but to take others lives for no real reason and nothing that has to do with them is on such a self centered level that I cannot comprehend it.

Horrible horrible thing for these lost lives and their families.

Funny how you never hear of mass shootings in Texas. I wonder why that might be?

Don't blame the tools for the demonic handywork, blame the demon.

This is just the worst, but what is to stop anyone from indulging a homicidal/suicidal psychoses rampage if someone comes to a judgement that is their best course of action?

Not knowing the case I am going to speculate that gunman at one time took SSRIs (Prozac,Paxil,Lexapro...) Small common thread in virtually all mass shootings no one talks about. Those are the tools of the demon just as much.
Kileen?? And are you saying that the kids should have been armed?

The sad reality is nothing will ever change because it's all about money! The NRA is way too powerful and wealthy, They know that if they lobby enough and to pay off the right politicians in the form of contributions, Guns will always be a part of the Constitution.

As they should be. Giuns cannot pull their own trigers.

If one person is saved because of stronger gun control or the outright banishment if guns it's worth it.

It's not, but unavoidable. Even the police spokesman was talking about it on CNN.
Maybe I'm taking this too personally- my son lives not too far from Newtown and knows kids from Sandy Hook who play in Little League. He called visibly shaken and everyone's awaiting word on what's surely coming next. Grown men are breaking down in public, including his co-workers.
I'm here trying to remain distracted...I don't wanna think of what's coming.
Its basic human decency to put down the effin' political megaphone for a few hours, until folks get a chance to get their bearings.
That's all I'm saying- its real people involved here, not some random event.
End rant.

I live in ct. Everyone here knows we are talking about real people. Children. It doesn't get more heart breaking. But something does need to be done to stop this from continuing. It seems like it is happening every week. And a new place every time. A mall. A movie theater. It's only a matter of time before a ballpark or a casino. It seems doctor we don't have time to let people get their bearings.

should people be allowed to own guns that fire 100 rounds a minute?

I don't have a real problem with that either way. No real need to have them but also no real reason not to for law abiding citizens.

Still the issue here is one very very selfish messed up person took out his frustrations in life on a bunch of undeserving children. That is a tragedy.

That's right, and no one should be so insensitive to bring this up with people who are affected by this.

But it's imperative that our society address this, and we ought to recognize that thousands of fellow-citizens being slaughtered is as apolitical a topic as there is.

Of course there is a reaon not to allow automatic guns that fire rounds in that number. It's not for protection. I support a person's right to own a gun for protection. It's not for gaming. I support a hunters right to use a rifle to hunt. A automatic weapon is for killing as many people as you can. There is no need for that in our society.

We could think of a few reasons not to.

I'm not even really trying to be political, and I didn't even say what my full opinion on guns is. I have family about a half hour from Newtown. This is obviously a horrific, horrific tragedy. By all accounts, it's shaping up to be one of the worst in American history. Unfortunately, incidents like this (although maybe not fully to this scale) are becoming all too common across this country.

Yet every time something like this happens, it's deemed to be the "wrong time" to talk about an issue that obviously warrants some discussion. The "Guns Don't Kill People, People Kill People" crowd and the "Ban All Guns" crowd shout a few things back and forth to one another, people forget about what happened, and no meaningful discussion ever takes place. Meanwhile, more and more innocent people are gunned down each and every day across the country.

Granted, dash- but that's a fruitless conversation at this time. Whatever valid points are made will not be heard...at least not yet.
I have no idea when the conversation should take place, but I'm fairly certain it can't be while we're still counting the bodies of innocent children.
God help us.

That's just not true:

September 1999 - a gunman opened fire at a prayer service in Fort Worth, Texas, killing six people before committing suicide.

July 2009 - Six people, including one student, were shot in a drive-by shooting at a community rally on the campus of Texas Southern University, Houston.
November 2009 - U.S. army psychologist Major Nidal Hasan opened fire at a military base in Fort Hood, Texas, leaving 13 dead and 42 others wounded.

let me get this straight...

a 20 yr old shooter who was a father of 1 of the kids in the class?

lets say his kid is 5... i can do math...

As they should be. Giuns cannot pull their own trigers.
Lol! Of Course they don't! Put it in the hands of an unstable person and this is what you get! It's amazing how people justify things! Crack or cocaine doesn't tell someone to smoke it doesn't kill someone immediately But it's Illegal for a reason!

should people be allowed to own guns that fire 100 rounds a minute?

Do we already know that the gunman owned these weapons legally?

You do realize that if guns are made illegal, then guns would still exist, right? Only then, they'd only be in the hands of criminals.

I hate guns. But I shake my head at 'Ban Guns' people because that mindset is so silly and constantly ignores the real issues when tragedies occur.

. politicize
A word to refer to a social issue that already has a public interest element, thus, is already political in character, but is used to give a negative implication to someone else wanting to examine the interests at stake.
We shouldn't allow the opposition to politicize this issue.

Shh!

or, you could allow a decent interval to pay some respects first, before eagerly diving into the gore . . . your very first post on the topic was not condolences, but right straight to the politics.

Always the excuse for not having the discussion. Upwards of 30 people are dead, in one incident alone, we'll pay our respects, and then we'll go about our lives acting like nothing happened. When is the right time to have the discussion?

if you think this issue isn't discussed in civil society, then you have your head buried in the sand.

and, fcuk, now I am drawn into it.

full disclosure: I own a shotgun; we keep it at our ranch for snakes & such. Other than that, I have no interest in guns. I am not a member of the NRA.

you can't see why some people would like a decent interval before we start the argument?

and, on the other side, there are people who actually like it when a gun tragedy happens, because they can get on their high horse and start their lectures.

I am happy to hear the lectures. I am happy to engage with them. But not fcuking now.

Say what?

So if one person is saved by weaker gun control would you be for that?

And in the extreme, if one person were saved by declaring permanent martial law, would you be for that?

Did I say anything about banning guns? I said I was in favor of hunting rifles and handguns. One is used for gaming and the other is used for protection. What is the purpose of automatic weapons besides killing as many people as you can?

halfmoon wins the politicization award

congrats, I hope you didn't trip over any dead children in your rush to score a petty point

Stay classy, moqui.

Hope you didn't either to score your equally petty of a point.
