NBA 2018-2019

I would very much be open to a January - June regular season, playoffs take us up to NFL preseason.
Bill Simmons had an article a looooong time ago about why the NBA should look into it and and why at the time they wouldn't, but I think it would make a ton of sense.

It's not like any part of the NBA season is really a tradition that anywhere cares about besides xmas day. Start the season on that date for all I care.

That's actually exactly what he proposed.

that's what they've been selling the last 6 years . . . to little effect

Look, totally fair. But they did convince Lebron last summer. And the 50 years prior to the last 6 were pretty good

On the Woj tweet, did anyone else find it weird the face to face meeting part was specified? like whoever told Woj about it wanted to emphasize it. Like a shot at Magic quitting and not doing it to Jeannie's face. I dunno. I'm weird and reading way too much into it I'm sure

maybe, maybe not. there are plenty of indications that lebron was intent on going there no matter what and for other reasons. he certainly did not choose the team that had a roster and/or a plan in place to help him compete for a title

yeah but jerry and jerry ain't walking through that door

Right, but that's kind of my point. The Lakers are an attractive destination for many reasons.

I think Bob Myers would be a hell of a get for them.

Baseball is dying a slow death.
The sport gets little buzz for people iin their 20s thru 40s.
It’s becoming too old.
NBA has the young demographic.

If baseball didn’t have the summer to themselves the sport would be in bigger trouble.

It’s 1. NFL...,...2.NBA.3.MLB...4.NHL

Lotsa money in the local TV deals.
No players with brain damage.
Guaranteed contracts.

They'll be ok.

Baseball audience is the oldest of the big sports.

They have money because of what you said but the future of the sport isn’t on a good trend.

You're point is the age. Mine is the local TV contracts.

Local TV contracts will go down when the old viewers go away and the younger generation isn’t watching the sport.

Baseball isn’t attracting young viewers for the future. They have old people now and that won’t last. Football/basketball are attracting younger viewers. MLS has a better future than MLB. They have younger kids interested who when they get older will still be interested.
Baseball has a problem that it is ignoring.

Strike Three: Baseball Is Dead

NBA doesn’t have to worry about this.

Football might die when the parents don't let their kids play anymore.

Football has its problems as well but it’s problems are more assumption of risk.
Basketball and soccer are attracting younger viewers.
Football is the most popular sport and has young and older viewers.
Baseball is getting grayer and older viewers.

Like soccer, (football) it is very popular in our largest growing demographic group.

I'm 41 so I grew up in the 80's. I get the impression that sports fans around my age are the youngest that grew up when baseball was still a national sport with broad appeal. Most of the kids in my class played little league, and a majority were at least casual fans.

football will end up like boxing in a generation. Only the most economically desperate will participate. Football at rich suburban schools like FM and West Genny will die.

I think I've made this point before, but I think baseball just trends older in general. Don't they pretty much always have the oldest audience of the major sports? I think people just follow baseball more as they get older.

Interesting that the average age of viewers of basically every sport on that list increased from 06 to 16; I just think that shows the way people consume sports is greatly changing as well.

Going gray: Sports TV viewers skew older

The average age of an NBA viewer is 42.
The average age of an MLB viewer is 57.

MLB has a problem in 20 years.

I get mlb.tv each year but can't tell you the last time I watched a full 9 inning game including ones I've attended. Might have been a decade and I'm 34. There is nothing compelling about baseball until 7 months after it starts its season and their offseason is easily the least interesting.

Forgot to mention this in my earlier post on why the Lakers job is appealing but you can add that the new guy is also going to have a natural opportunity to bring their own head coach in as well as all that roster flexibility.

Myers is a UCLA alum who was on their 1995 NC team.
Once Durant leaves and the drama Draymond drama coming the following year I could see Myers wanting this job.
I don’t really know how good Myers is.
He did draft Draymond in the second round. He didn’t draft Steph though.
Myers best move was not trading Klay Thompson for Kevin Love and managing the cap to get Andre Iguodala in 2011.

I just can't get over how incredibly few household names there are in baseball anymore. I've never been much of a baseball fan, but I can easily name dozens of players from the 80s and 90s. I have no idea who anyone is right now outside of like Mike Trout, Bryce Harper and a few others.
