The NBA draft has become a lottery fest. Teams draft for upside 2-3 years after the draft.
The NBA draft used to bring developed players who could contribute right away. Now it’s like drafting HS kids in the MLB draft they take time.

I am not talking about the very top of the NBA draft but after the top 5.

Michael Porter Jr. was a top 5 talent in 2018. Injuries to back were concern but it was obvious the talent was worthy a being a top 10 pick.

Blake Griffin missed his entire rookie year, several top players miss their first years.
The NBA draft is all about upside. How a team like the Charlotte Hornets or New York Knicks which needed superstar talent didn’t take MPJ and just announce he was redshirting his rookie year was just stupid.
I said it at the time.
Porter when healthy is like Kevin Durant offensively. You gamble on talent like that.
Especially after the top 5.

Denver got a steal.
Losing that last game to Minnesota was good for them.

I gamble on talent like Porter Jr. in the NBA draft.

Yup. You pretty much always should swing for the fences for the highest upside guy available. You’re not winning squat in the NBA without superstars.

Unless you’re already a championship level team with superstars and you just need a solid “sure thing” to be pretty good but limited ceiling guy to fill a role and a hole like, say...Josh Hart. Otherwise, as soon as there are no likely stars available, you better gamble.

I always remember my dad(Sixers fan) saying they should pick Kobe #1 in ‘96. Literally probably the only guy in the world saying that. And this was in ‘96 with a loaded draft! And AI was great! But damnit if he wasn’t right. They really should’ve picked Kobe. So should 11 other teams.

Doubt it. Bol might take a bit to get there still. And as good as Porter is, the health is going to be a concern for the near future.

Grant is a great piece for them to hold onto IMO. You can’t have enough guys like that in today’s NBA - can guard most of the guys on the court, can defend on the perimeter and block shots, can hit the 3 and finish at the rim and knows his role. IMO, you’ll be able to have Grant, Porter, and Bol on the court at the same time and subbing for each other due to their versatility and athleticism.

I’m biased because he’s on my team and I watch him more often but Anthony Davis’s defense jumps off the page more to me when I watch. Is Giannis really better than him on D?? Or is this a bandwagon “it’s his year” thing?

Toronto played their regular rotations but just couldn’t make normal shots to start the game and the Celtics got ahead and didn’t give it back.
Just a normal clunker for any good team.

Toronto is still my pick in the East.

Based on the numbers, Giannis was pretty far and away the best defender this year. I also think Zach Lowe wrote in his article that after the first couple months, Davis’ defensive impact didn’t really show up in the numbers anymore.

Based more on people who have done a lot more work to study it than me (a guy who just watches games) the answer seems to be Giannis is legit unbelievable on defense and should win.

He's obviously not the only reason for this, but the Bucks defense has allowed teams to shoot 45.4% on 2 pointers this year. Second in the league is the Clippers, 49.7%. The difference between 1 and 2 is the same as the distance between 2 and like 20. They're miles ahead
