NBA Thread 2020-21 Season

Comparing the Kuzma contract and the laughable contract the Clippers gave Luke Kennard your right.

Clippers have no other option right now. They need to lock up Kennard and if he stays healthy, he's easily worth that deal.

Also, it means they can trade him next year if needed.

What else are they going to do? If he's healthy, that dude is one of the best shooters in the league.

I don't think it was a steal based on his play so far in his career but I think there's a decent chance he improves and it becomes a steal (though by then, he'll likely opt out and cash in).

I love Fultz and am rooting for him to succeed but that's a lot of money for him.

Jonathan Isaac getting 4/$80 mil too. Orlando really needs to find some worthy players to spend their money on lol

Got to spend the money. Also, I think Fultz was a lot better than people think (not saying he's great).

Max contracts are hitting over $40M a year. Seeing people get like 14-18M a year isn't that crazy for guys that are just solid.

Shamet was a better defender and shot 40% from 3.
Did a lot of dirty work and didn’t need a lot of shots.
Kennard is a 40% from 3 guy.
Kennard had one less year on his deal and took more shots thus per game averages were higher.

Clippers did that deal for draft picks.
As Shamat’s defense is better.

I don’t think Kennard is worth 1 year 24 million more than Kuzma.

The deal Kuz got would have been there at the end of the year unless he fell apart or had a major injury. Probably could have gotten more on the open market. I guess he and his agent wanted security.

Kennard’s agent killed it. Good for him.

Isaac was really coming into his own last year, then had the injury. Then he got hurt again in the bubble. I don’t know about that money, with two pretty big injuries in one year. I like the kid though.

Some of these teams are all in on the current roster and UFA's or cap space will never be an option anyway. So not that big a deal.

Kennard was a bit of overpayment, but they are capped out regardless. No point risking losing an asset.

And Ballmer doesn’t care. The Kennard and Morris contracts are only an issue if Leonard doesn’t re-sign.

Yeah, and teams like Orlando have no choice. They’ve gotta pay up to get guys to go there or to stay there.

Shamet is not a good defender. He’s had the lowest defensive rating on the team the last two years. He had a sophomore slump, where his three-point shooting dropped from 45% to 37%. He might wind up being better than Kennard in the long-term, but Kennard is better right now.

The Clippers didn’t just make the trade for draft picks. While the defense and shooting might be a wash, Kennard is the superior ball handler. He can create offense. That’s why he’s an upgrade over Shamet and that’s why the Clippers traded for him.

Kinda interesting thing to maybe file away for a couple years:

Chris Haynes, who is basically Giannis' family and is also very close with Damian Lillard, says that the two of them discussed teaming up together and that Portland was a very serious consideration for Giannis if he hadn't taken the supermax. He says they discussed the idea of teaming up in both Portland or Milwaukee when their contracts allow.

I think both guys are very loyal to their own teams, but if it ever gets to the point where one of the teams wants to hit the reset button (like we saw with Westbrook and OKC for example), that maybe they'd seek a trade to team up with one another at that point.

I don't know exactly how the timing on all this will work, but i wouldn't be surprised at all to see Kuzma dealt relatively soon. Being on a larger deal could bring back someone making more money as well.

Not sure when he's eligible to be dealt using the new contract value. Next season?

I may be wrong about both of these things, but I think he can be traded around the deadline (think it's like 3 months after the contract is signed), but since it's an extension, I think his cap hit will be nearly nothing for salary matching purposes, so it won't really allow them to bring anyone significant back.

Poison pill. Counts as approx 3.5 mil going out, approx 11 mil for the team taking him in. Lakers could only get about a 4 mil player in return. Trade partner would need to absorb that extra money.

He will be a Laker all year.

Right, so not till next season would he count the same both sides of a trade?

Yeah, Garden better be careful.

Autocorrect made him into Garden. I'm fine with it.

He’s got a lot of hoe in him, so it works.

Pure class waiting for the fans. We already got like a hundred of them, so no need to rush it.
