NBA Thread 2022-23 Season

you are 100% correct. Did anyone ask Spoelstra? Even more important the way Denver was missing FT's. Excellent post. I think the media and the announcers are so sold on the Spo genius that they don't question anything. Heat did not have any sideline advantage in this series.
9-10 seconds is an eternity at the end of an NBA game when teams have timeouts. If the Nuggets make 1 of 2 free throws. Heat call timeout. Lowry bangs a quick three. Boom it's a one-possession game with like 5 seconds left. JUST KEEP PLAYING. It's not an exhibition game, it's the last game of the season.

I think (think!) the teams over the second apron can't sign buyout guys who made more than a certain amount, I think the average salary (like $11 million or so). So like the Westbrook scenario, the clippers couldnt have signed him. If someone gets bought out and they were making $5 million I think they would be eligible to be signed. Not sure how often that really happens anyway.

It's going to be really tough for teams to have 2 35% max guys, and even a 35% and a 30% will really stress teams ability to supplement the roster. I could be overrating this, but i really dont even think most of the people who passed this cba have realized how hard it's gonna be to keep good teams together for any length of time

Even the best coaches make bad mistakes. See Pop benching Duncan in game 6 of 2013.

Makes you think very hard about signing Jaylen with Tatum coming up if you’re Boston when you aren’t 100% sure you want to commit almost $300M to him.

That may have been the team I had in mind when I said that.

Fill in the blank. As of today, Joker is a top _____ player of all-time.

I would say Top 40 at this point is reasonable. I would put him ahead of "second-tier" superstars like Drexler, Payton, Pippen, McHale at this point.

30, will finish top 20. Maybe even 15 depending on how he and Giannis (and maybe doncic who is lagging behind but much younger) finish off the next decade.

Obviously the guy has to flesh out his career totals and everything but Jokic is now a 2 time MVP who won a title with an all time playoff run. Averaged 30/13/10 on 55/45/80 in these playoffs. Denver lost 4 games all playoffs.

There are a lot of variables such as injury, but if he plays another decade at an MVP-level and wins another ring or two, I think he could definitely finish Top 10 all-time. The numbers he's putting up are unprecedented.

He's definitely top 40. Like I've said in the past with the Giannis discussion, put together a list of all the multi-time MVPs and you'll be surprised how short it is. Can do the same with Jokic's all NBA 1st/2nd team nods too. And Jokic is just getting started relatively speaking.

The other variable is interest. I could totally see this dude calling it quits when he's like 32 or something.

Jokic's first 8 seasons are right on par with Shaq and Hakeem.

I think he'll finish ahead of both of them.

I think Giannis may as well.

To be clear, I'm a guy that thinks Kobe is overrated and that Duncan is ahead of Shaq, Hakeem and Kobe.

This is very reductive, but the list of people who have won multiple MVPs and a finals MVP

Kareem, Jordan, Lebron, Moses Malone, Bird, Magic, Duncan, Giannis, Steph, Wilt. 10 guys. Finals MVP wasn't given out until 1969, so I'll go ahead and give Russell the benefit of the doubt, plus Bob Petit.

Again, not like thats the 12 best players in nba history or anything, but it's a hell of a list.

They said last night their have been 11 players with 2+ MVPs and 1+ finals MVPs. Pretty sure it is..

Jordan
Kareem
LeBron
Magic
Bird
Wilt
Duncan
Durant (edit- he only has 1, nvm)
Curry
Moses
Giannis
Jokic

Russell would have had but didn’t have finals MVPs until ‘69 I think.

JYNX

his ability to use his size to get shots off where it seems he isnt really leaving the floor is insane. like Moses Malone.

It’s easy to dismiss Shaq because he could have put up better numbers.

It’s also justified.

Jokic and Giannis are already well on their way to pushing down Shaq and Kobe and Hakeem, imo.

I don't think anyone else has a shot (outside of Luka if he goes on a tear combined with his stats).

Back to Jokic, I think it helps him that Giannis is also doing this around the same time as him because it gives him that awesome counterpart.

I basically gauge how people see historical players in the NBA by how they judge Duncan, Shaq and Kobe in the post-MJ evaluation of best players ever.
