In 1910, Fielding Yost cancelled the game with Notre Dame 24 hours before kickoff, claiming that the Irish fielded ineligible players. Following that, Yost was instrumental in the entire Western Conference boycotting Notre Dame. There’s historical debate over the reasoning, but general agreement anti-Catholic sentiment contributed greatly to Yost’s actions.
As a result, Notre Dame started scheduling nationally, since there wasn’t enough high level competition available in the Midwest. Later, Rockne made the decision to give away radio rights so a station could broadcast Notre Dame games for free - in part to create a national fan base which was possible due to their national scheduling.
The result is a widespread fan base which is what has allowed them “special status” with TV, bowls, etc. I agree it’s irritating - but you can’t separate how we got here from bigotry from 100 years ago, and shouldn’t demand Notre Dame “move on” if you’re unwilling to tell members of groups that were historically discriminated against that they should just move on, too.
