ND fans can go POUND SALT

Lot of Catholics and Irish people in upstate. We have no pro teams in Syracuse, Roc or Albany.

American Irish I think is more accurate. My buddy is from Ireland and just got his citizenship almost a year ago. It’s so funny when he gets pissed about St Patrick’s day and other “Irish” things. I asked him once about ND and he looked at me and said, “What are you talking about” with his thick accent.

I grew up an Irish Catholic who watched Notre Dame games every weekend when I was a little boy with my Irish Catholic grandfather. It was usually the only game on TV. It was my grandfather's dream to see ND play live but I never got the chance to get him to a game. He was too sick in 2003 to go to the Walter Reyes game. Probably better for him that he wasn't at that game. I am an SU alum and season ticket holder. I rooted for SU yesterday but I will root for ND and SU every other week of the season. I get that some ND fans can be pompous douchebags much like Duke basketball fans. But my 16 year old daughter was sworn at, flipped off and was generally scared by several SU fans at the OCC women's game yesterday when she mistakenly wore an ND sweater to the game. My daughter doesn't even like football. I and many other SU fans were pretty pompous at the UConn football game in September and we can be very pompous when we fill opposing basketball arenas and we are winning.

I have no problems with Notre Dame fans as a group. I'm sure they have their share jerks just like any other fans base, including ours. The ND fans sitting in front of me we very polite, just having a good time watching their team pound ours. They didn't think much of the refs, especially on that last touchdown.

I do have a problem with ND promoting their 'special' status. I recognize their importance to the history of the game and the Notre Dame victory march will always be my favorite fight song but that doesn't mean they should have their own TV network deal and get to join a conference for everything but football.

And I have a big problem with SU season ticket holders that sell their tickets to Notre Dame fans rather than coming to the Dome to root for their team.

Notre Dame faced a lot of anti-Catholic bigotry in the earlier days of college football. I suspect some of the over the top hatred of Notre Dame is cultural residual of that era. Some of the reason they still have a large fan base nationally is due to the tribalization sparked by that period. I kinda get why Notre Dame draws such strong reaction; they are a window into an America we don’t want to see, and would prefer to pretend never existed.
I’m part Irish and Catholic. My disdain and many people I know dislike front runners that pick team that are winners ( perception) So I strongly disagree. Respectfully

Douchey fan base was my general experience as well. It sucks having to listen to them and I was sitting there just wishing we got them earlier in the year before we had so MANY injuries/banged up etc.

Regardless on the way out saw the most arrogant pompous entitled younger fan walking by me in the back aisle repeatedly running his hand across his throat/slitting his throat. Immediately got up in his face getting closer to blows than I have in 20 years saying congrats for the win but you don’t have to be a classless dbag and win with class, win with class you fing dbag.

It was quite ugly, went on for a while and scared some people around us but don’t care how old I am, was more a sociological statement than a sports thing. This is the average ND fan in my experience. Worst fan base I’ve ever come across and indicative of too many ND fans I’ve come across in my time.

So much historical hype over the years has created this bs myth. They have the ugliest campus what looks like commuter campus I’ve EVER personally seen in this country, their stadium is meh, and they’ve stole two heismans from syracuse, fluck them, their university, their entitled fans.

I ended up parked next to three ND grads that live in NYC and came up for the game. First time at the Dome, they had a lot of positive things to say - one specific comment was they couldn’t believe how loud it was.

Sharing just to show not all their fans were bad. I think it’s significant that they graduated from the school - my opinion is grads are more likely to realize their behavior reflects on the school and behave accordingly. The non-grads whose only attachment is to a sports team tends to be where you find the problems.

That's a fair take. I understand people's dislike of the NBC deal and ND being allowed to not join a conference. But there is a lot that ND gives up as a result of those decisions that other schools are not willing to do. If Alabama or Texas or Ohio State or even Syracuse thought that not being in a conference was in the best interest of their university, they would make the change. SU did something similar when we basically put the kill shot into the Big East

Would you have a problem with Syracuse having their own TV deal if they could get what Notre Dame gets?

I don’t know and I never will. Would you have a problem if Pigs flew .

In 1910, Fielding Yost cancelled the game with Notre Dame 24 hours before kickoff, claiming that the Irish fielded ineligible players. Following that, Yost was instrumental in the entire Western Conference boycotting Notre Dame. There’s historical debate over the reasoning, but general agreement anti-Catholic sentiment contributed greatly to Yost’s actions.

As a result, Notre Dame started scheduling nationally, since there wasn’t enough high level competition available in the Midwest. Later, Rockne made the decision to give away radio rights so a station could broadcast Notre Dame games for free - in part to create a national fan base which was possible due to their national scheduling.

The result is a widespread fan base which is what has allowed them “special status” with TV, bowls, etc. I agree it’s irritating - but you can’t separate how we got here from bigotry from 100 years ago, and shouldn’t demand Notre Dame “move on” if you’re unwilling to tell members of groups that were historically discriminated against that they should just move on, too.

Notre Dame hasn’t won a national championship since 1988; that they have a fan base of “front runners” is a really tough sell at this point.

Did you see the word perception.

The question wasn’t for you, but yeah I’d have a real problem with pigs flying.
The question wasn’t for me. Basically I thought any post was for everyone. If you want to post for an individual with no response from the general board population then you should PM message . Administrators please let me know if I’m in error.

Then why don't you actually answer the question if you insist on responding to the post?

Touche.

But I think it is a fair question to SU fans who despise ND not being in a conference and having their own TV deal. Would you oppose SU doing the same if the SU administration thought that was in the best interest of SU. A lot of Big East schools despise us because we, as a founding member of the Big East, walked away from that conference for the security and dollars of the ACC. That's the gist of the ESPN "Requiem for the Big East". I'm glad that SU did that. I just find it odd that SU fans applaud SU when we essentially killed the Big East but criticize ND for doing what they deem is in their best interest as a university.

Ok , Imy problem isn’t based on the NBC/Peacock deal. It’s the following they attract. The Duke/ ND/Cowboys are my favorite team even though I live in Kirkville. Yes they 100% have every right to root for anyone they want, but there still annoying.( The TV deal isn’t quite the windfall that they hoped it would be with the money the SEC is taking in)

I totally get that. But as long as fans stay true to that team through the lean years that adds some credibility to them. And let's be honest, ND and the Cowboys haven't won anything in over 20 years,

Yes , but they act like they have.

The greatest trick that Notre Dame ever pulled was convincing the football world that "independence" was the holy grail to them, while simultaneously all of their other sports teams are reaping in full benefits associated with being in conferences.

Some hypotheticals are too hypothetical to be relevant. I'll just say that I long for the days when the NCAA controlled TV and spread the wealth of Tv opportunities around.

So the NBC contract and the refusal to join a conference is just like reparations to African Americans?

If football independence is not important to ND, then why don't they join a conference today? If they did, they'd earn about 30 million more per year in football revenue (from an ACC membership alone, let alone an SEC or BIG 10 membership) and their path to the CFP would be easier.
