ND fans can go POUND SALT

Notre Dame faced a lot of anti-Catholic bigotry in the earlier days of college football. I suspect some of the over the top hatred of Notre Dame is cultural residual of that era. Some of the reason they still have a large fan base nationally is due to the tribalization sparked by that period. I kinda get why Notre Dame draws such strong reaction; they are a window into an America we don’t want to see, and would prefer to pretend never existed.
Huh. The reason is they are always operated, getting primitive always and always getting calls their way. Overated

Overated...prime time. Sorry cell phone

I ended up parked next to three ND grads that live in NYC and came up for the game. First time at the Dome, they had a lot of positive things to say - one specific comment was they couldn’t believe how loud it was.

Sharing just to show not all their fans were bad. I think it’s significant that they graduated from the school - my opinion is grads are more likely to realize their behavior reflects on the school and behave accordingly. The non-grads whose only attachment is to a sports team tends to be where you find the problems.
Yep fully get the general generalization I’m making, one can only make observations based one one’s personal experiences. Understand there’s nuance and exceptions to every rule, but anytime I’ve had bad fan experiences in my life it’s been with ND. Perhaps it’s from the sheer numbers of them feeling emboldened sure but all the more reason to act with greater civility.

There were a lot more ND fans there than some think. No it wasn’t 40% but many of them, at least what I saw from people screaming for them, were ND fans that didn’t have ND gear on and just nondescript stuff. I’d say they had about 15% and they were loud as hell. Screw the SU fans in the lower level that sold their tickets to ND fans. Screw the 3 season ticket holders to my right why gave or sold their seats to ND fans. Screw the SU fans that walked in with friends or family in ND gear. Our crowd was loud but SU fans (those not there) need to WANT to be there.
This was certainly the case right in front of me. The guy in front of me has 6 season tickets. He sold four to ND fans, one of whom carried on like a total jerk. The STH came to the game with his son who was decked out in ND gear. This is.in the lower bowl and made me want to vomit.

If football independence is not important to ND, then why don't they join a conference today? If they did, they'd earn about 30 million more per year in football revenue (from an ACC membership alone, let alone an SEC or BIG 10 membership) and their path to the CFP would be easier.

Because, not only is ‘Pride’ one of the 7 deadly sins, it’s said by its believers to be the deadliest.

So not to be that guy but I just can’t help myself; all sin brings about the same result. Biblically speaking, pride is the beginning of sin and was the first sin, thus the father of sin.

Hmmm….I dislike them because their previous coach killed a kid, and that assistant jumping around on the field waving his arms to the crowd is par for the course classless and goofy type stuff that goes on there.

I dislike their fans…..maybe not their real fans - alums and Indiana residents/natives - because I’ve never actually met one. But their “fans” from CNY who root for UNC or Duke in hoops, the Yankees, and the Cowboys, Patriots, or Steelers….they are just the worst. Some of them are Bama fans now though because ND doesn’t win at a high enough level.

Or maybe they really do value the importance of being able to play a national schedule as a national Catholic institution. They do give up a home game every year to play against another team in a stadium near that team's location like they did this year when they played a home game in Las Vegas against BYU.

I'm not getting into religious debates and the citing of Bible verses. Did that enough on the OT board for years.

I agree, would give Yankee fans a pass on that being a somewhat regional choice. ( I’m not one )

I don't see SU basketball fans who did not graduate from SU nor have any residential ties to Central New York to not be real fans of SU hoops. I also do not dislike Gerry McNamara as a fake ND fan.

They used to drone on about wanting to keep their games with traditional rivalries. You know Purdue, Michigan State, . That was rubbish.

SU is not the “easy choice” bandwagon team like ND/Bama/Duke/UNC.

If there are Missouri, Washington, Maryland, Cincinatti, Michigan State, etc, fans who have zero ties to those schools or areas but just like the program, the way they play, etc….awesome. That’s not bandwagoning.

Your post is beautiful and almost spot on. One problem though. We literally live in NY where the Yankees play. CNY Yankees and Mets fans can not be lumped into your formula. We live in NY !! Local Red Sox fans 100% fall into this category however.

The only traditional rivalries that are most important to ND are Stanford and USC, so they can play Thanksgiving Saturday in California and Navy.

I disagree. They should be rooting for THEIR hometown or where THEY went to school. This isn’t hard.

Notre Dame hasn't won a New Years 6 bowl game in 20 years. Bama, Duke, UNC have multiple national Championships in that same period. My kids are all ND fans living here in CNY and they haven't seen ND do squat their entire lives. Bandwagon???

Apples and Oranges, we do have some for hoops , but it is nothing like the ND subway alum monster. Plus I think hoops is a different animal. Lot of fans, particularly young kids , root for players. My son is a Senior at Binghamton, his frat bros actually care more about NBA and fantasy teams for hoops. Except my son who doesn’t want to be banished from household.

Not everybody is lucky enough to be from an area with a major D-1 sports team though, and not everybody does to a school that plays D-1 sports either.

Which makes it extra annoying when CNY locals root for Notre Dame and Alabama.

It's not apples and oranges. It's a double standard that SU fans hold against subway alum ND fans because ND has more such fans than SU.

They’ve played for the NC though.

ND is also a “cultural statement” school too though. As the commentator on the game yesterday pointed out - all the St. Bonaventure students tend to root for ND football.

You are certainly entitled to that opinion.

I disagree, the Mich State rivalry was big. So was Purdue a short drive. Their fans changed their tune when they threw rivalries away so they could be faux ACC football member.

This is why I didn’t bring up the NBA - it’s such a player driven league - lots of fans just follow their favorite star player from team to team.

And a lot of times the types of fans who root for ND and Bama hate the NBA and claim “they don’t play any defense and it hasn’t been real basketball in 30 years”.
