Needs in order to compete next season

Looking at the roster and not actually knowing who else is going to opt out here is my two cents on the positions that we need to fill in order to be competitive next season against the most difficult schedule I have seen in 60 years of watching Syracuse football

QB. Without Kyle returning or someone really stepping up next year is going to be very difficult.

RB. Have not heard on LA hopefully he returns but if not same as above. We need another back. Willis and Nixon are solid, but we could use another stud.

OL specifically center.

On the D side every position with the exception of the DL which I believe will be strong. Specifically, we need two corners and all three LB positions.

Kick off specialist.

I'm not sure who on the current roster will be stepping up so anyone with inside knowledge please step in.

Agree with much of this. Center is a glaring need. But I think defensely need one stud linebacker and a cover corner. Not sure if oh can do kickoffs. Bowl game will be an indicator

Pretty much agree. We really only play 2 LB's in our scheme and a STAR which is more safety like, i.e. Devin Grant. Definitely seems like we need an impact LB, not sure we will bring 2 transfers in unless we lose others though.

I wouldn't mind bringing in an impact guy on the D Line, probably DE. We have a lot of numbers and a lot of younger guys that need a little more time I think.

Hopefully any RB add has some speed and gamebreaking ability. LQA was a stud all-around player, but his lack of speed was evident (although offset mostly by his strength and will). With a lesser QB, a better run game would be a must. Obviously a reinforced OL would pair with that nicely.

On D, I won't pretend to know who coming back may help, but LB and CB certainly stand out right now, and not in a good way. I have faith in Fran to bring in some starters. What happened to James Heard this year? He would seem like the perfect candidate for a starting spot, but disappeared after the first month or so of the season.

Need some pass rusher(s) help.

At CB, losing Lewis to graduation and Barnes and Bellamy to the portal is a lot of loss. We don't have a lot there and its all very young. Kerr and i'm guessing Ibn McDaniels will take on larger rolls next year but so unproven and untested. The rest is mostly depth pieces in my mind. Of the freshman I think its likely Singleton could get a little PT and maybe some others with some spot duty but we almost have to bring in 2 good corners from the portal. Buxton, Delaine and Braheem probably with back-up spot duty time. We need to bring in more starter level talent here.

I always want to upgrade across the line. We lost a lot of experience but also return a lot of guys who’ve been in the program for some time now but we absolutely need a center.

My wish list is either obvious holes from departures or weaknesses.

Safeties who can really hit and support the run game

RE Corners since we don’t seem to play much man and leave guys on islands it’s hard to say what this need is. Smart guys who can understand assignments and also support the run?. IDK. Same goes for safeties to.

Codie Hornsby would probably be the name to watch at center among returners.

I don’t see why Reed couldn’t come back given how Pavia won his waiver against the NCAA. Reed and Pavia both started JUCO

Playing these teams means we have to run and stop run period. 5 almost playoff teams. Need 2 stud corners plus a good safety. Our rb and wr will be fine in my opinion withwho we have coming back. Gotta find a way to get James on field in screens or sweeps or send him long if he can catch. If we get Mccord back i am hopeful for 8-4 if we are lucky. Our defense has to improve drastically. If not we end up 6-6.

I really like our haul with DBs. I just know how hard it is for a freshman or redshirt frosh to start and cover Clemson stud, Tennessee stud, SMU stud, Miami stud, and a ND stud at receiver. You need tostud corners andi believe we have Kerr who i love. Just not top program talent yet. Key word is yet.
