David M. Joyner has been named acting athletic director for Penn State, effective immediately. Joyner, a Penn State Distinguished Alumnus and a member of the Board of Trustees since 2000, will suspend his membership on the board to take on his new role, according to a news release issued this morning by Penn State.

"Dave Joyner has served the board with integrity, and he is internationally known for his work with the U.S. Olympic Committee. I am confident that he will bring that same integrity to his new role," said Penn State President Rodney Erickson.

Mark Sherburne has returned to his duties as associate athletic director.

"I would like to thank Mark for filling this leadership role when asked last week. I am grateful for his willingness to do what was needed to move us forward. Now, as he returns to his regular duties, we look for his continued leadership in that role," Erickson said.

Joyner received his bachelor's degree in science from Penn State in 1972 and his M.D. from Penn State's College of Medicine in 1976. Following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a brief stint in the World Football League, Joyner began a medical career with a sports medicine emphasis.

Joyner's work with the U.S. Olympic Committee includes service as head physician to the United States' teams at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, the 1991 World University Games and the 1989 United States Olympic Festival. He is a past chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society. Joyner served as the chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee's Sports Medicine Committee and the vice chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee's Anti Doping Committee. He currently is a member of the medical commission of the Pan American Sports Organization.

Joyner wrestled and played football while attending Penn State, and is one of a select group of individuals who have been inducted into the GTE-CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame, which honors "those with the highest standards in college academics, athletics and in life beyond athletics." He is a member of the All-Time Nittany Lion Football Team. He received the Outstanding Football Alumnus Award from the Penn State University Quarterback Club in 1985 and the Penn State Wrestling Club's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1993. Joyner was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993.

So they're really cleaning house, eh? A JoePa player, PSU Trustee. No overlap or legacy issues there. One boneheaded move after another in sappy valley.

Another Penn State guy. Could they get any more incestuous?

They really need to go outside the family and get someone with a reputation beyond reproach. Someone like the late Myles Brand.

Yup. A very neutral party to oversee things in the athletic department. Why didn't they just promote Jay Paterno.

I doubt it's anything long term (longer than 1 year). They need someone to take some leadership of that sinking ship, and who better than someone from their BOT. This has happened before in scandals (see Paul Grys taking over St. Bonaventure AD position in 2003).

I see no problem with it.

Going with an outsider at this stage would be quite foolish. You need somebody that will keep the real bad stuff out of the public and control the information flow.
