Next year - QB? | Page 15 | Syracusefan.com

Next year - QB?

Agreed. I can see it playing out one of three ways.

1. Williams is good enough to start, and builds upon this year's apprenticeship and takes the reins this offseason.
2. Incoming frosh Carney is so good, he leapfrogs Williams and uses spring practice to get ready to start next year.
3. Either / both of them need more time to develop, so we go "sell" an experienced QB on McCord's success.

I'm guessing #3 will be the option Fran and staff pursue.
I saw the other QB we brought in (Belin?) rated higher than Carney. I thought that to be curious.

There will be quality competition. It's not going to be a guarantee for him.

It's also not going to be an experienced starter coming in.
That's the right approach and consistent with the hints I got (which was basically not a guaranteed starter or big NIL type, as we need to focus elsewhere in the portal there).

In my mind, if Williams is the guy they would save money but still pay him more and then they could spend on a center / guard guys plus add 2 lb 1 stud dt in either 1/3 shade and a long safety whom has range and great tackling ability. I truly hope its Williams and he compliments the run game and as season progresses he keeps getting better. We have to remember that Kyle is helping these guys learn how and when to throw and too who. He has the feet and definatly the arm. Just need a good backup if he is gonna run.
Do we think we don’t have $$$.

A couple of interesting names out there that have NE ties -

Ryan Browne - Purdue Transfer - From NY

Dante Reno - Still at SC - The LaNorris Sellers consolation prize - From CT

Why is everyone not believing in Williams? Think Sellers was “ready” to play in sec right away? No chance but look what he did and how he performed as a true freshman. I think they are nuts if they don’t start JW
I really want him there but i wish i had tape too see how he is improving. I am sure McCord is talking everything he does with williams so he learns. Get Kyle toplay bowl game but get Williams in on some drives to get him acclimated and then he has all spring asone plus pre season.

Well we just arent Georgia or Texas with being able to pay for a bunch of 5 stars. Fran stepped up the money here somehow but we aint spending 20 mil like Ohio St. Why we are going after a ton of three star kids but unlike Dino, all these kids have measurables like immense size or track like speed. I would love to be able to get a 5 star qb and about every position but we aint there yet lol.

My next guess is a guy who was Mr FB in his state and his college HC that brought him in is no longer there.
That would describe Browne.

At least one writer is speculating Syracuse might be involved.

Browne is a dual threat guy. He was up and down as a backup QB in 2024. Class 8A POY in Florida as a senior, when he led Venice to a state championship, is pretty impressive.

I believe Beckett Wales and Aaron Hackett are both from Venice HS.

This has been the most infuriating thing I keep seeing.

Most programs bring a qb recruit in. They sit for a year at most and then take over the reigns.

Just because we had great success with McCord doesn’t mean every single year we need to bring in a one year qb.

None of you have seen Jakari play and yet they’re tossing him to the wolves.

Makes ZERO sense

It's less that I don't believe in Williams as much as we just haven't seen anything somewhat concrete on how good he is.

And coming off of McCord's season it would seem we can make a compelling pitch to a high end QB prospect, so why not see what can come of it?

Don’t you think that Coach Fran Brown has seen enough in practice?

Do we not trust what he sees at every practice?

Honestly, some of it is likely Babers bias. He seemed better at identifying QBs that went other places and played well than getting his own guys.

That's not fair to Williams, or Fran's talent assessment abilities. But that is a factor in my thinking at least.

Have to remember, Fran could have pulled the offer from Jakari but didn’t last season.

Meaning Fran believes he is a qb worth having on the roster and potentially taking over the reigns.

I won’t be shocked to see us try to grab a depth piece qb in the portal, but we also need to remember, most of the guys going into the portal at QB are expecting a starting role. Don’t think we are willing to offer that to any qb in the portal this year.

I actually just responded to that in the other post I just made.

So to reiterate, I agree that it may be an unfair assessment of Brown, but

1) guys respond differently sometimes when the lights are on and they're in an actual game, and you don't know that until you see it

2) QB is an INCREDIBLY difficult position to project. The NFL doesn't even get it right a lot of times. So it's not so much questioning Fran, as it is questioning anyone's ability to predict how a jumpy to the next level actually goes

Fran only kept a few guys from Babers' class for a reason. He thoroughly evaluated them all. He kept the ones he wanted. I heard he was very high on him and he's had a whole year to watch him closely.

I know. I do remember that. That's why I said the thinking isn't fair to Fran's talent assessment.

But if people want reasons why there's skepticism over Williams, there are reasons.

Right but that’s old school loser mentality.

Too many people scared by the last 20 years of SU football and not used to how a real football program is run

We are better than that now with HCFB

Bowl - want McCord to play, if not give the back ups split quarters or halves

Spring game - I want to see what Carney looks like.

Are we just completely overlooking Michael Johnson Jr.? I am also asking myself. He was a high 3 star/low 4 star QB out of HS with major offers. Bama, FSU, PSU, LSU, Miami etc.

Knows the offense better than a transfer, has rapport with teammates, he is a senior so he is mature. The only question is, what can he do with the lights on and are we willing to alter the offense to suit more of a running able QB?

Man this is going to be fascinating to see what Fran does.
I see him possibly as relief/fallback insurance for Williams.

Wasn't who I was thinking. bnoro had said the kid hadn't portaled yet.
