NFL Thread - 2018

Two great games today marred by horrible officiating.

For the playoffs the NFL needs to place somebody in the booth and when a clearly botched call is made that guy in the booth has the power to buzz down and overrule the call or non-call on the field. Then plays like the LAR PI or the phantom roughing the passer call on KC against Brady are immediately reversed. These players move quickly and we've got dudes out there in their mid 50s trying to keep up and it's impossible. They have the technology - use it.

One other thing, go back to the way it used to be. If the ball hits any part of the ground then it's not a catch. Too much subjectivity now. Keep it simple.

Agree with you on the age of the refs... that had always been an odd thing to me. Hockey is one sport where the refs all look young and in shape.

Disagree on the catch rule. They are getting these catch calls right now. And thank God!

Yeah the catch thing is too subjective to me.

Last year I went to a game at Met Life and I was down near the field. The refs came walking by and I looked at a few of them and thought damn I'm in better shape than some of these guys and my best days came and went a long time ago.

I had LA on the money line and I didn't even feel that good about getting the win.

I parlayed the money line with both dogs. Also had the under game 1 and over game 2. Nice day.

Pay them more and make them full time. It’s on the owners. They can afford it, but don’t do it because the fans keep coming for more because they know they have us addicted like it’s crack. Every play should be reviewable if it’s wrong. Fans deserve better.

Yeah I'd say that qualifies as a nice day. Particularly the over in Game 2 given the 14-0 halftime score.

Was real worried at half.

Chiefs had no pass rush. And never changed anything to get some. If you let Brady stand there and throw you lose.

I guess I'll go to my grave never understanding why teams can't stop the predictable Edelman crosser on money downs. Why bother with a deep safety - just triple team that route. If I get beat by another sideline prayer to Gronk so be it.
God this is so boring.

The Pats OL never gets called for holding, and there's no way they're not. Everyone else gets called, why don't they? Only one reason for that. The league has more or less decided that they're the best and they just deserve every call/non call. It's kinda like Greg Maddux getting 6 inches off the outside corner, every game for ten years.

Well if there is one thing in sports that is undervalued, especially in the age of analytics, is competitive spirit & the guttural need to win... the Tom Brady and Belichick want it more than anyone I’ve seen in sports.

It’s unreal.

As both are confirmed cheaters, every time they pull out a win in a big game, I find myself wondering what they're doing this time.

Truth be told .. and you aren’t going to hear this on any of the sports shows tonight or this week .. but Brady AND Brees were not very good today . Brady was CLUTCH but his suboptimal play is what lead to him having to be clutch in the first place .. that INT at the goal line was terrible .. he was throwing behind and high all game (till the last drive) leading to incompletions and tips leading to what should have been two MORE ints.. (one called back cause Ford is an idiot )

Brees was frankly BAD.. he was missing throws all game and could have sealed it with that 3rd and 17 to Ginn where it’s A TD if he leads him, instead throws behind him .. that long pass to Ginn on the fateful NO PI drive was a duck that the Ram DB butchered .. I think Brees is close to done

Not unfair. I never liked Brady, never disliked Brees. I'm okay if they decide to pull the pin, especially Brady. I actually want to see Belichick try to win without him. :D

Brees’ INT was bad - weak. Take the sack or throw it in the dirt.

Brady’s at the goal line- I think he got fooled. The Pats don’t have very good outside talent at the WR position and Gronk is a shell at this point. He’s really just rolling with Edelman at this point. Brady’s awareness and game management is so good that it’s hard to get in into bad positions.

Donald and Suh are probably the best combo to give him trouble.

I don’t think Brady is anywhere near the end .. I just thought his performance today was sort of average overall but that will all be forgotten cause how clutch he was at the end ..and clutch is everything .. Brees been bad now for much of the latter 3rd of the season .. his noodle arm is a problem .. if his accuracy slips even a tad , he’s not long for this league

There were zero OL holding calls in the game. KC OL held NE Flowers on a clutch play.
The Patriots OL was awesome. Patriots got 4 sacks on Mahomes.

First I have no horse in this race, I am a Phins fan and they have been irrelevant for decades. Second, USA Today ran a poll last year, with responses from only NFL players. Who is the best player in the NFL. Answer: Tom Brady. It’s really the fans as is typical that have a beef and that usually stems from beat downs. Brady cheating, is a bit like saying baseball players cheat with pine tar. Ummm ok...so instead of traveling 400 feet it would have travelled 330? Still a home run. (I am spitballing there a bit on the actual benefits of pine tar but you get the gist).
Lastly in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, if you aint cheatin, you aint tryin. Just about every player on a football field try’s to cheat and they view that as getting the advantage. Dbacks pull backarm/jersey of wide receivers, linemen grab jerseys, etc...no one calls them cheaters. Sometimes a player is just really good and finds a way to win. Regretfully that has been Brady for the Pats. Hell he he even won in the wife category...she is a 10. Do I hope Brady smokes a turd in hell? Yep I do. Is Brady the best ever in the game. Yep he is. Do his peers think he is the best? Yep they do.

I don’t like starting from the 25 tho. Feels so unnatural.

Agreed with that, especially in the NFL where that would be a chip shot FG. IMO each team gets the ball at their own 25 (or get a kick return, I don’t really care but i think kickoffs will be gone by the time the NFL does something about OT).

God this is so boring.

The deep safety was bizarre, especially after the first two conversions lol. Forcing Brady to go deep is a win at this point in his career; he’ll kill you underneath all game but his deep balls almost always give the DB a chance to make a play.

With Edelman, it’s a lot of stacked formations/motion that forces the DBs to all be perfectly on the same page because they have to switch mid-play. It’s tough to pull off switches in the NFL because the WRs are running full speed in opposite directions and you have to stop and then accelerate in the opposite direction to try to keep up. They should have put a safety in the middle of the field though.

I have to read about 18 pages to catch up, but I’m assuming you all have blamed Brees for the loss based on his late INT, which threw away any chance the saints had.

Wonder away Cowtown. You’ll have another chance to wonder in two weeks.

If you are trolling Brees that is unfair that noncall was so bad it should invoke a no trolling policy.
Coleman-Robey got away with 3 penalties on that play they gave LA a chance.
Brees may not have played his best game but that non call was a big factor in that game.

Sure, the non call was a huge miss. I am speaking third hand here as I missed a bunch of the third quarter with my kids, but a buddy of mine told me they didn't throw a flag against the saints when there was an obvious facemask against Goff that affected their drive. Again I didn't see it, but that would certainly change the course of the game too. Again speaking third hand, but only the missed PI call is discussed as it was at the end of the game. Timing is huge.

still dont get the non overturn on the edelman catch, but the roughing call was awful.

I just don’t want his INT to be glossed over by the refs, bad calls happen in every game.

Wonder if that ref did the Giants -iggs game in Philly??
