Or lack thereof. We were dominated. Actually, their run game was much better the whole game.

Youth movement seems to neglect the O-Line... I realize lineman need more time to develop and that logic points to playing upper classmen... But, maybe it's time to shake up the O-Line too; put Conway over to R tackle along with Roberts @ R guard...

Palmer couldn't beat his man to set the edge at all to open up running lanes! He really needs to slide back into guard (or we play Roberts instead of Shanley) and we move either Conway or McGloster to right tackle. Really wish Ward could drop his weight and get back into the lineup, we could really use his size to open up running lanes both between and outside the tackles.

We only had the ball 20 minutes all game and we still rushed for 165 yards and total yards 320. I would say our rushing offense is fine and not having our QB in there might have made a difference.

That CMU team we just played is a pretty good football team. They played a now ranked Ok St team and lost 24-13, they are much better than anyone thought they were. Scumbags they might be but a good football team.

I would bet that they win the MAC West.

Good post. Let me throw out that we are 40th in the country in rushing, 43rd in yards per rush, 44th in yards per game. Our rushing game, while not fantastic, has been good so far.

The perception is they had a better running game because we got to see them more. Sure we had some bad running plays, but in the first half they couldn't stop us. Plus our running game came through for is OT and CMU's did not.

Our running game only seemed to work within the option schemes and the threat of a Dungey pass. The straight up the gut power running game seemed non-existent to me. Had it been good, Wilson would have remained the QB throughout after Dungey's injury. OL was not creating many holes yesterday.

Cheers,
Neil

I thought we ran the ball fine. Outside of the jet sweeps which have been losses most of the time, we have had decent gains.

We would have crushed them if ED didn't get hurt.

The threat of a qb run opens up lanes for the rb's. Once Dungey was out cmu ignored the qb and keyed on the rb... and he obliged by handing off every time.

Except for a dumb block in the back early in the game, we would have about 80 more yards on the ground when the TD was called back. Sure would have helped being 31-10 vs 24-10 at halftime. Can't recall if we scored in the possession after that penalty but we were rolling if we had an extra possession in the first half with Dungey.

If Eric played the whole game my estimation is 1 less TD for them, 2 more for us. Take out the OT points and that makes a 38-17 final.

Trudo would have helped

5 ypc compared to their 2.7
if you take out the yardage that Fredericks gained on Dungey's way downfield pitch (which, for the purposes of the question, you should since it is an extension of Dungey's run and not a product of the conventional team run game), the average drops to 3.16 ypc.

Even so, thats not bad considering the total lack of a passing game after Dungy went out.

You shouldn't take out dugeys designed runs, and scrambles whatever. Running qbs have killed us for years doing just that.

Anyhow, I thought emerich filled in fine. I think Palmer at tackle is killing us on the outside. Maybe both tackles, I have to rewatch it.

Designed QB runs should absolutely be included. Maybe not scrambles as they are passing plays. I do wish that college football would take the NFL approach with sacks. It would paint a different picture.

Toledo would disagree.
