Not to get too crazy or ahead of myself (ourselves?)

once we play a team again that plays pressure D that requires someone to get past his man, you might see the issue on offense again.

THAT SAID...Joe possibly turned a corner on that front. We’ll see how it goes.
Good points here. Also, want to see the Jessie and Joe show against a team with a solid center. Last couple were not formidable.

12-11. Love the mini win streak here. Love that we have the chance to keep winning tonight. But come on here... 12-11. I'm putting the tournament at under 5%. Just glad we have a path over .500.

Duke, UNC, Miami, ND and Wake. Right now that is the NCAA tourney list from the ACC and ND and UNC are both bubble teams.

It would be extremely unlikely for the ACC to get 6 teams absent someone like us wins the ACCT. That means we have to have a legit case against UNC or ND for starters and then against the bubble otherwise.

UNC#42 is 0-7 in Quad 1. They however have zero losses in Q2 through 4. We are 0-5 and then have 5 Q3 losses. Huge gap there.

ND#61 is 2-5 in Q1 with 1 Q2 loss and 1 Q3 loss

We are #86.

If both UNC and ND finish strong while Miami and Wake do the same, anything short of 1 or less losses before the ACCT could put us in a still very sticky situation.

That pick play is very difficult to stop. Jesse's defender has to come all the way out to defend against Joe stepping past the pick and popping. Joe's defender has to stay all the way out too because if he falls off Joe too fast he'll take that shot before the other defender can get past Jesse. A subtle fake easily freezes both defenders and Jesse is two steps alone to the hole. Also Joe will always dra the shortest defender or else they would be on Buddy or Cole and they'll fire away. Joe's shooting percentage is giving these defense's a headache.

I have convinced myself that we'll do enough to keep the .500 streak alive, but be off the bubble (in the bad way) going into the ACCT.

But then Duke gets upset and we run the table in the ACCT to get into the show.

And then there is a week of stories for whatever poor team has to play us in the first round and everyone going "here we go again with SU".

If SRS is predictive, we end up 17-14 before the ACC tournament

VT and UNC aren't that much higher. Go 7-1 and they're 19-12

If this is jbs last year are they going to be petty enough to keep a 20 win team out?

I would sign up for this. ACCT run, back on cover of ESPN and popping someone's bubble.

It is the NCAA we are talking about here...

Not one of the last 3 opponents hedged hard on that play. It was pretty to watch for us but consistently lazy defense.

Good plays and Joe makes a difference but not a lot of teams left will let that go so easily. Luckily BC shouldn't be able to defend it very well.

i think the PR of having the entire boeheim clan in the tourney plus the perpetual bubble dwelling nature of the team the last decade gvies them a boost in terms of chances of getting in...actually think toureny success as a bubble team has helped SU get in a few years recently as well

so

i think if the team just gets close enough that it is reasonable, they are in
There are plenty of reasonable complaints about us playing guys who only offer something on offense and little to nothing on defense, but to act like the O in general is a problem this year is misguided. Our first four problems are defense defense defense and defense. Our O is only a problem in that we play too many guys who are only good at offense.
well the offense has been "good" but moslty not good enough to compensate for bad D...

and the reality is that the offense is the area of the team where improvement is and has been possible much more than any other...the defense isnt getting better because slow players arent gonna all of a sudden become fast. they literally cant do the rotations necessary fast enough. that wont change

so, while the offense has been a strength...it hasnt been strong enough...until the last 3 games

in terms of how the team gets better with this roster...to me its to max out even more on offenseive efficiency and become just as lethal against the vcu, duke, uva houston type teams...if those teams cant slow this offense down, then they can truly beat anyone

there is room for improvement in the offense because the scheme itself hasnt been maximizing the talents of the players - they are getting outshot from 3 and not even attempting as many 3s as other teams despite having better shooters

since the problems on O are schematic - and the problems on D are physical limitations - make sense to focus on improving the O and to focus attention on that side of the team over others

Joe doesn't need much space to shoot. If his defender slides back to Jesse, Joe wil step back and fire. If Jesse's defender stays behind him, Joe will step past the pick and fire. If he gets clean looks, he can shoot 50%+. If both defenders key on Joe, Jesse slams the ball down. It's like an option play in football, but they don't have a guy blocking on the pitch.

Funny story - when my son was I think 9-10 years old I coached a CYO team. We had 2 kids who were really good,. Advanced for their ages. We taught them to run the pick and roll, and they could do it whenever we needed a basket. One game was back and forth most of the first half and we were running it pretty often. At a time out, one of the boys asked, when are we going to stop running the pick and roll? My answer was - as soon as they figure out how to stop it.

On a hard hedge it pushes Joe out and he has to actually dribble past to find the passing lane or step back and not have his feet set to get a shot off. It's not an unstoppable play. It's a good play but like I said not one team in the current streak has hedged it hard. When you do, the roll is harder to feed. If you use a shooter with Joe then you can pick and pop which is beneficial against the hard hedge. It's where if we had Cole vs Houston last year to play with Buddy it would have helped.

I disagree about the defense getting better. Two of our starters are in their first season in the zone. Sure, were worry about Jimmy and Swider being slow, but some of that is lack of experience. They needed a second to get moving to the right spot. They are doing it more instinctively now.

We have been seeing a lot more steals lately. The trap is coming quicker and the rotation is better. I started a thread about the lost trap. It seems to be back.

We've gotten better rebounding. Always a weakness, it's looked pretty good lately.

No, Joe Girard and Buddy aren't becoming MCW and Battle all of a sudden, but the defense can get better even from here, if the two forwards get just another step better at anticipation.

And there's little doubt it is already better than when we got crushed by Colgate.

yes I agree that the D has gotten better in those ways..i hope im wrong that they cant get good enough on D

but I dont think that it can get good enough to not give up unlimited open 3s to competent offenses...simply because of footspeed...which is the biggest ceiling on this team.

either have to outscore or hope they miss...any team that can pass and shoot will make the margins razor thin...a la the NC state game---shooting 70% in 2nd half and unable to pull away.

still , yeah, try to improve D for sure...dont give up on that. but in terms of getting better from here I think the best bet is further maximizing offensive efficiency...(even though it is already good)

Speaking of not getting too crazy or ahead of ourselves…but if…IF, everything goes perfect.
