Notre Dame Post Game

We watched Joe Girard in questionable shape for years and run out of gas in 2nd halves repeatedly... Then he goes to Clemson for his final year and gets in the best shape of his life and his foot speed measurably improved and stamina in 2nd halves improved considerably.

Good programs ensure players are in shape...

If needed, they put players on regimens with nutritionists, customize workout and training sessions for players, set and track weight goals, etc.

Eddie looks and plays like he needs this.
S&C needs to change.

This is missing the boat. Teams with less talent than us are competent. They can play defense and they can run offensive sets that create open shots. Yes, better players are required to win at elite levels, but we are a Quad 4 team right now. That's who we are competitive with. There are 100 college coaches who are better at X's and O's than Red, without question. He recruits well so far, but how long is that going to last if he can't coach at the level of LeMoyne, Colgate and Cornell, where we barely squeaked by on talent, not coaching.
Lemoyne Colgate and Cornell keeping up with Syracuse despite MASSIVE talent gaps is all about the quality coaching they have. In no world should le Moyne go on the road and almost win against a P4 team in their 2nd(?) year in D1

Wait, our coach isn’t good?

Analysts ' "Basketball has rapidly evolved into a much more outside based, spread floor game, with so many more players better able to shoot the 3"

Syracuse Orange 2024/2025 - First game in 10 years without a 3 point shot.
Remember when every guy coming in was a great shooter and the guys already here would shoot better?

You actually would have to pay me ticket cost, parking, dinner and $200 to attend a home game this year
I'm wondering about attendance too, gonna be way down

Before this game, out of the normal starters, Donnie had the highest PER. JC was last and it was like 4.7. An average player is supposed to be at 15.

Donnie is fine. The worst thing that happened was people thinking he was going to be all world. That was never going to be the case.
This board always overrates our freshmen who come in with big hype. I remember people thinking Bennie Williams was a one and done 1st round pick.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of coaching would produce that kind of change.
Lack of discipline. Lack of accountability. Not enough toughness from the staff. Too much coddling.

I’m going to take a break for a while. Hopefully things get better.

That would affect free throw percentages?

Against Notre Dame I thought SU's defense took a step in the right direction. This was the first game where they played with the right kind of energy and focus from the tip and maintained that kind of intensity pretty much throughout. This team must play that way on defense if they want to have success.

Donnie makes his fair share of freshman mistakes which is to be expected, but he plays a lot of minutes for a frosh and I really like his attitude, effort, and the way he brushes off his mistakes and has a next play mentality. He has a strong mental game and obviously a lot of physical talent and I am excited to see him develop this season.

On that note who is the leader of this team (JJ is out)? What is this team's identity? I think we will see the answers to those questions as long as this team continues to play with the right kind of effort and energy on defense. It would be unusual and perhaps unnatural to see a frosh become the leader but you never know, and it will be interesting to see who emerges especially while JJ is out.

This L in South Bend is a conference road game. Notre Dame has a new coach in Micah Shrewsberry who did an excellent job at Penn State and surprised a lot of people. He also left that program in better shape than it was when he took it over. Notre Dame needed a win in a big way, and they showed up ready to play for their coach and to get a home conference W and start the conference schedule strong. This is a painful for loss for the Cuse, but in the end winning conference games on the road is almost always a challenge.

I am seeing more good habits from this team and less of the bad habits. This team still has a lot of potential and we could see a lot of growth this season. These guys need to continue to play hard and improve on defense, clean up some of the decision making, and develop a winning identity as a team. They need to be coachable. Learning from mistakes is often painful, but it is much more painful to learn from mistakes while sitting on the bench.

Because he eats too much and cruised through the summer.
He is freaking injured. What is more likely? Option A - going into his final year of college hoops, his final chance to make a name for himself before taking a shot at any type of pro basketball overseas or otherwise, he kicks back, pigs out, and allows himself to get in far worse shape than he was last season at Colorado. He figures hey I got one big check so why even try and get in shape this off-season? I’ll just wait until I try for the pros to get in serious shape and I’m sure they won’t mind my film for my final year being horrendous. I’m sure this won’t have any effect on my reputation going forward.

Option B - he trains just as hard as he has every offseason and unfortunately sustains a back injury towards the end of it. The injury holds back his ability to keep his conditioning up to his or his teams standard at the start of the season, but he still fights through it to give the team everything he can, not wanting to let the fans or his teammates down, and not wanting to let his future in hoops slip away because of a weak final season.

If you think it is option A you are a freaking hater. This is bs from our fans who are basically in full agreement with DCs fat asz sitting and complaining on his couch.

Here’s another one- why is Naheem McLeod defending him in the comments if he saw him slacking off all off-season? Why are his teammates and coaches not showing any slight hostility towards him on the bench or to the press if they saw him slacking off all off-season? Because he freaking didn’t slack off!! Freaking ridiculous our fans our saying stuff not out of place from UConn fan trolls on twitter

Cuffe and Westry on the court together in the 2nd half truly blew my mind.

That's always baffled me with rotations at times. Perhaps it's because they practice more together, who knows, but throwing in a couple of lightly used guys at the same time always seems like playing with a bit of fire.

All of a sudden we'll go from our normal bizarre subs, to Cuffe, Westry and McLeod! I think we did that against Tennessee. Or something akin to that at the very least. If we were doing it to press, play zone, install something specific, I'd get it...but otherwise, I'd think you'd want to work them in with regulars initially.

Hey listen. Im not a hater and i think that is such a weak argument. Bottom line the kid is overweight and carrying that much weight often leads to back problems

And if it doesn't lead to back problems it surely won't help you recover from them. I'd probably sit him until he's 100%.

The only weak argument is assuming he threw away his basketball career to chow down on some food! That is the biggest stretch there is. I am suggesting the possibility that the dude is not a total piece of garbage! Is there no way in your mind that he hurt himself first and that lead to the conditioning issues? You are a hater if you fully assume he just got lazy and that’s how he got hurt. This place is just plain nasty now!’

That was not good. That was a Net 102 team without their best player.
I thought the team played pretty good defense, even whipping boy Bell. The 3 point shooting and FTs killed this possible win. Didn't Red say this was a very good 3pt shooting team - odd. Surprised ND is 5-5, they seemed better than that.

Where did this intel come from that Clemson got Joe into shape!? Joe looked the same to me. He did have Covid the one season, but that was 2-3 years removed.

Perception is in the eye of the beholder, as they say...
