Notre Dame vs The World

I’m just surprised we didn’t get a look in the playoffs.
Or they didn’t use ND smoking us by 63 as a tiebreaker.

ND's issue with the ACC is that invariably most of the five games with ACC teams are against teams that are often unranked. It's killing their SOS.
Suppose Notre Dame should beat at least 1 of the top 2 teams on their schedule before griping about SOS, no? Had they beaten either they'd be in the CFP

How is Notre Dame crumbling? They can literally choose whatever conference they go to and will be welcome with open arms. Meanwhile, Syracuse will never have a seat at the table. This threat is really unbecoming.
If ND could "choose any conference they want to", why haven't they?

ND could join the BIG IF football joined, otherwise no chance. I'm not even sure the SEC would want ND even w/ football included. Why send your women's softball team to Northern Indiana when you don't need to do anything to enhance your football team?

They did. Last reported, ND is contractually bound to join the ACC if they join a conference for football.
I'm sure said contract has an expiration date.

Point is, Notre Dame, sans football takes more than they offer. Even with SEC doesn't need them and really the B1G don't either but at least they
fit geographically.

Last year the ACC Champ was in danger of not making the playoffs. That should have made the #1 tie breaker the rankings. Zero excuse.

Absolutely. Needs to be #1. Frustrating that it was not...
The argument being raised against that is the conference doesn't want an outsider to determine who is in the game. They want on-the-field results to determine who's in and who isn't. It's ironic that we were the reason Duke got in over the others. I believe it was mentioned on the broadcast Duke was the only team whose opponents had a .500 record, courtesy of our 7-1.

It’s pretty obvious Notre Dame overrates their place in the world. One of the comments people are making is that Notre Dame brings great ratings. That may have been true at one point - it’s hard to argue it in 2025. In this case, ND drew an average of 3.9MM viewers this year, Miami drew 3.4MM. Anyone they ended up playing would be rated above both of them as well. This had no impact on the decision and isn’t the big benefit ND thinks it is.

{snip}
It's not just TV ratings, it's fannies in seats because their games at the ACC stadiums usually have higher attendance than the rest of the ACC teams' home games.

Your question is pretty easy to answer. They're getting paid $50 million annually through the end of the 2029 season by NBC. Kinda removes the need to join a conference for football.

Their SOS was held against them - not that Miami had a strong SOS - if it were stronger that might have also gotten them into the CFP.

BFD. There’s a bit of a bait and switch involved there, as Notre Dame compared it to in conference games specifically. Its closer to a P4 nonconference game than a conference game. That’s the actual comparison. And there might be a tiny, itty-bitty benefit to schools there - but it’s not that much. And those games are increasingly rare, there are no games for a comparison at Syracuse in ages. If high level nonconference games were important, they would be a regular occurrence.

Plus Notre Dame is ignoring the fact that the agreement locks in a bunch of games every year they don’t need to scramble around scheduling a in an environment where P4 schools aren’t feeling a lot of pressure to schedule Notre Dame. They ignore the benefit they get, overvalue the benefit they provide - and can’t figure out why nobody agrees with them.

The fact they had such a public tantrum is actually a really good indicator of their declining power. The loudest guy in the room is usually the guy with the least true power (or close to the least). They’re having a tantrum because they don’t have any way to leverage actual power.

But you can't look at it sans football. That's part of the equation. Ya think SU will use the ND game next fall to justify certain pricing? Every ACC team that hosts ND each year will do that.

You need to take a peak at ND's schedule over the next 6-7 years. They have a contract to play SEC schools -Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Florida, Arkansas along with annual deals with Clemson and Florida State. Also will play Michigan State and Wisconsin. They hardly lack for options.

That has 0 to do with their being able to choose a conference whenever they wish which was your point I responded to. The SEC nore B1G would allow them to join as non football nor is 50m anything to write home about especially to either aforementioned conference.

So beat Miami or ATM and stop scheduling Purdue? They obviously couldn't predict the train wreck Arkansas would be but it's also not hard to schedule a top half SEC team instead.

I don't have to look at it sans football... my team is in a conference. I don't really care about 5-10k more tickets for a single game or the name Notre Dame on the, I'll go watch Cuse play Holy Cross.

For now. If going to 9 conference games everywhere, and the "guarantee" of making the playoffs at a certain level for ND, the conferences may freeze them out. Then all of a sudden... they DO lack for options. Right now, they seem to be pushing all in for some reason... I'm not sure that they ACTUALLY have the cards to back it up.

I get that but once head to head is out the window, it isn't determined on the field.

Also what is more important getting a team in the playoffs or some non human tie breaker? The former benefits 16 out of the 17 schools, greater good.
