Officiating Crew

The most infuriating thing for me is they started changing how and what they were going to call. IU run in 2nd half started as they were allowed to be handsy on D. About the 10 minute mark the stripes say "now we are going to start calling that". The inconsistency in game is what drives me batty. That and the assumption of foul rather than seeing the foul.

Watching live I thought Bennie got overpowered. The B10 network was on at the gym this morning and showed highlights. When I watched it again, Bennie actually did a decent job boxing out but it was clearly over the back. Really lousy officiating last night. Had we lost, that call, the phantom call against Buddy, etc would be all we talked about today.
Truth be told, I can understand not calling that, because typically refs let the players play in the last minute, but to literally call the foul against Syracuse a second later giving Indiana the chance to tie is absolute BS. Consistency is all I ask for, and that is not what we got between that no call on over the back, and the foul under the basket, not to mention the phantom Buddy three point fouls he somehow committed by not touching the other player. Truly maddening, and I'm just glad we got a huge win.

Kid from IU had dominated and was going to get the benefit of the doubt. Fortunately Buddy has achieved that status for us too so we get an equalizer sometimes.

Exactly. It was clearly over the back but most refs would swallow the whistle at the end. The key was the inconsistency last night. The Buddy foul was simply a totally blown call but some of the other stuff was just flat out inconsistent. It's also true that it largely went both ways.

the one where Buddy got hit and just threw it up and went in and everyone in the bldg waited for the whistle was interesting.
Only to be contrasted 14 seconds later on the ensuing IU possession when the Hoosiers got a phantom foul call on Cole Swinder, resulting in two FT for Miller Copp with 1.5 second left in the half. "Here, have two points, on us."

Too many phantom whistles for nothing and too many make up calls. That crew needs to be put to pasture.
I remember Jeff Anderson reffing my high school games back in the day

Yes, that is very true. Stars get the calls, and luckily Buddy in the last 2 mins of the second OT got us that win with extremely clutch baskets. It was just a very frustrating end of regulation, with an 8 point lead, that slowly dwindled, to then having the game tied on a call that seemed quite suspect, but that's sports. Gotta deal with the human element of refereeing.

I watched the FTs at the end of regulation over and over. It looks like the Indiana kid may have released a hair early and got into Benny's foot hindering a rebound attempt.

A ref would likely and understandably never catch that. Clever move though.

honestly.. in that spot there is no reason to not go early if you are SU.. he was gonna try and miss.. if they call you for it. fine he gets another try. but if dont you win the game. still it was 2 pretty hard fouls not called and then the phantom foul on us. the only one that looked close was Swider but he didnt get the ball on him so it must have been on Benny somewhere under the play..
