It's minutiae Bees. And completely unenforceable. Besides the fact that the NCAA is toothless, it's a nothing rule that everyone else is bending. And while you are trying to go right by the letter of the law, Gator and Irish fans are making the kid feel wanted.

SU has the stated policy because they have to Cover their ass. They have done their job by making sure they have an official policy on it. Fans will do their jobs by doing what it takes to make the kid feel welcome.

And while it is not easy to enforce, they will eventually make an example of someone.

of the three SU, ND and FL, guess who would get hit.

Then I'll be sure to start tweeting away to Gtown recruits or Rutgers recruits. Unenforceable.

Shhhhh...The NCAA is ruthless and will spare no cost to get to the bottom of your devious plan.

just in time for all the big rippers that are thrown on Sunday night in Cuse town!

Funny stuff. If its no big deal then why does SU ask not to do it. High horse? Don't like someone pointing out NCAA and SU rules, then just leave. This isn't the only site that asks fans not to engage on social media with recruits.

They also ask you not to drink and drive, yet they sell alcohol

Liability purposes... "we told them not to do it"

you're smart, You understand that fully. I understand you're point, but this is such a small deal, it's not worth the worry.

If a kid makes a decision on where to go to school because of twitter activity, he's an idiot.

"They ask you not to shoot people, yet they sell guns"

--> Same logic and pretty stupid.

Don't disagree. But unfortunately some of them are. Some of these guys love to be loved.

And apparently, you have no problem "loving" them. It's pretty creepy.

not sure i understand what your point.

are you calling me stupid for comparing apples and oranges?
or are you saying institutions are stupid for asking 1 thing but basically doing another?

Im very disappointed considering how much I value our opinion...err, maybe not. And This coming from the guy whose screen name professes his "luv" for a former player. Oh the irony.

The point of my posts clearly went way over our head.

The boards compliance officer. Lol. It's the rule. Ask SU or read the recruiting info they send in the mail on occasion. Hey, someone else does it so we should. The moment you contact a recruit and have no prior relationship, you become a representative of the University. SU outlines who can and cannot be a representative. So your answer is to tell SU to stick it.

Even if this is Syracuse's position on the definition of a "representative of the university", this doesn't mean this is the correct definition. Just think about how overly broad this definition is.

It's not their definition.

Its the NCAA's definition ... I posted a link earlier in the thread. The moment you contact a recruit with the intent to direct them to a school you are then seen as a booster for that particular university ...

I would like to be referred to as WorldWideATL from now on.

i dont undertstand why people think its not enforceable. if the NCAA wants to build a case its pretty easy to enforce especially since all the contact is stored and waiting for someone to review it.

I wonder if a school got punished for things like this and it was made clear the person who made the contact knew the rules would the schools have some means to file a suit? its the school who ends up in trouble for an action they have little control over.

Not to get off topic and get away from the fabulous discussion of tweeting high school kids, but is EO on campus today?

Yes EO and Gus showed up last nite...

I can see why they have the rules but there is no way to enforce it unless every major Div 1 school gets hit with some sort of penalty

I think everyone knows it is enforceable in a literal sense, it's just that now-a-days there are so many people tweeting/facebooking Recruit X, it'd take all of the NCAA's staff to try to police it. I would guarantee there are at least 10,000 of these interactions with recruits every day. The NCAA has roughly 450 employees, and I would imagine a sliver of that number is designated to sniffing out infractions. It'd be impossible to keep up with all of them

While you can't enforce everything all it takes is one high profile recruit ... for instance ... Nerlens Noel ... the guy had to go through a thorough review, more so than an average recruit ... heaven forbid SU lands a high profile guy in football ... which doesn't happen very often and something like secondary violations from social media become an issue ... schools like Bama, ND and UF will sign a lot of high profile guys ... its not uncommon ... but when a high profile 4-5 star chooses SU over a couple blue bloods no matter what the reason you run the risk of having someone start asking a lot of questions and doing a lot of fact checking.

On top of that ... any idiot with a UNIX background could write a script that crawls any public twitter or facebook feed and starts pulling data based on key word searches ... pulling data like this makes it very easy to mine and use for good or for bad. A well written wget script can do a lot of fact finding in minutes ... anyone who thinks social media feeds aren't effectively logged and made easily accessible is naive at best.
