You are correct sir...if they were referring to the school you would use "is" as in Syracuse University is bowl eligible. However you are referring to a team (group of people) therefore the correct word to use would be "are". An example other than Orange would be the Stanford Cardinal...although Cardinal does not have an (s) at the end of it, it still refers to a team, therefore it is still plural...so you would have The Cardinal are bowl eligible...so they should have said: The Orange are bowl eligible.
