Okay, so the Canadian tour is over. What have we learned?

Quoting this message because the site won't let me post otherwise for some reason...

In all honesty, I think Johnson could contend with Cooney as the 2nd string 2 guard

Except Cooney is the 1st string 2G right now.

The most important thing I noticed was that when cooney makes mistakes, all hell breaks loose or it results in something negative.

Examples please.

Not until Maui, will we start to get an idea of the people who will really play, the jury is still out on everyone in the backcourt but Ennis.

Great summary. I'm disappointed to hear about Coleman as I was expecting him to make a monster leap this season. I believe he had the most rebounds in the McD All-Star game so the comment about inability to rebound is very disconcerting.

The fan jury doesn't count.

You misunderstood my post, JB will fix the rotations as the season progresses as he always does. Starting guards don't always end up playing at the end of games.

Examples please.

Are you serious?

Alright just because the kid hit a string of shots against DII caliber Canadian teams does not mean he's a new player. I'm rooting for him and all but the fact is he looked lost all of last year and we won't be able to tell whether he's a start or even deserving of a roster spot imo until the game against IU or at least the first dome game.

Yea, I'm serious. You said one of the most important things you learned in these games is when Cooney makes a mistake, all hell breaks out.

What I'm trying to say is BJ minimizes his errors, Cooney does not. I over exaggerated, oh hwell. I also think BJ is more talented on both ends of the court, though Cooney could earn himself the starting position if he gains confidence attacking the basket.

Right now, it could change, but I don't see Cooney shooting anywhere above 35% from three.

To justify his starting role I'd want him at at least 38%

None of what you said is based upon fact, and some of it is made up. Cooney has excellent skills, and without the added pressure of having to be great or sit back down, he will do well.
I think he started 0-5 from 3, so he finished 7-16. (or close to that). He's a good defender and beter than adequate ball handler. BJ will play, and on nights he is hot, will play a lot.

trueblue...JB is not going to go with a backcourt of two freshmen. Won't happen. It puts a lot of pressure on BJ as well as Ennis. Cooney is the best we've got. He will start and if he doesn't, it would be Gbinje. But it looks like JB wants Gbinje coming off the bench. Might come down to Patterson vs. BJ for backup minutes at 2g beyond the top 3. Those two will get their opportunities but might be limited in big games to 8 guys (bench being Gbinje, Roberson, Keita). I may be totally over rating Roberson but I think he is more ready to contribute right away than Grant was last season.

Never did I say BJ should start. I said he could compete with Cooney for the 2nd string spot, because I believe silent G will earn the starting role or at least get JB 6th man mins.

I'd love to have G starting, that's fine by me. I feel like he's much more talented than he showed in this tournament or w.e. though he showed that he can be a talented transition threat, as well as a great passer. His size also helps the zone immensely.

  • The rebounding stinks. Again. Same old, same old. I know that playing zone 100% of the time makes us susceptible to giving up offensive rebounds, but the team is going to have to work harder to shore up this collective deficiency if we're going to maximize our potential this year.
on the defensive side, very true. But that is always the case - SU ranked 281st out of 347 teams last year in defensive rebounding percentage. The bad news is that trend will continue; the worse news is the percentage they allowed in Canada would have been 337th out of 347 for a full year!

On other end, though, the offensive rebounding was good last year (9th in the nation) and was even better in Canada - .418 OR% would have been 2nd best in the nation last year.

Clearly, it is not that SU has poor rebounders, or else the offensive rebounding wouldn't be so good. So it seems unlikely that hard work among the players is going to make that much of a difference - the squad has ranked well below 200th in the nation 10 of the last 11 years; hard work might move us from 281st to, say 225th. It is a zone thing. It frustrates us but we have to live with it. As always, Syracuse has to make up for defensive glass weakness by generating turnovers. The hard work they have to do in practice is on their defensive slides and rotations in order to maximize those turnovers, especially against well coached teams like Carleton. Teams that take care of the ball will always give the Orange a harder time than a team that hits the offensive glass, IMO.

Based on what? I didn't know the guy was on the court half the time. I know its a new role, but he looked like a set up man. Just get a "hold" and don't lose the game. Don't know why everybody thinks a guy that couldn't play at a mediocre Duke team should come in here and start. He didn't show me he should even play, except to spell Ennis, which will be important.

A mediocre Duke team that produced Austin Rivers and Kyrie Irving.

Name one su guard in the past 5 years who'd start over those two at Duke.

Dion Waiters.

Austin Rivers is an overrated bum.

Cue the: 'Dion didn't even start here...' argument.

starting duke guards tend to be chronic underachievers next level

I think we've learned that if you sell Trevor Cooney short, you're dealing with Bees. ;)

Never did I say BJ should start.

Hell, I'll say it... BJ should be our starting 2 guard... Start CJ AND Jerami, let's actually have our best team out on the floor at the START of the game as well as the end of it. BJ has a fundamentally sound 3 point shot, and the confidence of a burglar to keep shooting. Start Rak for D at center...
That's a Yankee power line up at the 3/4/5 hitters... Bring in MG and DC2 along with Cooney off the bench... Roberson and Keita if necessary...

Sell short? Don't you mean misrepresent facts? Like "all" the turnovers?

By the numbers, As seniors...
Rautins averaged a three point attempt every 5 minutes
Southerland averged one 3 point attempt every 4.75 minutes.
Gerry averaged one every 4 minutes played.
Dnic averaged one every 5 minutes played.

Donte averaged one every 4.8 minutes played as a fresh.
Devendorf averaged one every 5.8 minutes played as a 4th year JR.

And all those guys could either shoot off the bounce or right off of motion.
If Cooney can average a comfortable spot up three close to every 5.5-6 minutes played, I will be happy.

Last few years it was Triche .. now Cooney. Triche turned out to have done more than okay during his tenure here .. I hope Cooney has half of his career.

Dion is the better NBA player, but if he was competing with Rivers for the starting job that year he would not have gotten it.
