OT: Harbaugh at his finest

His shtick has kept his show in the top three year after year. Same as Jim Rome who gets bashed here. In my opinion there is no question Colin could have asked him to rehabilitate that interview.

What is the top 3? I mean, there really isn't many syndicated shows outside of I guess Fox sports? I mean, it's basically whomever ESPN choses to torture us with -- jim rome, mike and mike, cowherd. They're all popular and have a ton of sponsors ... and they're all awful.

Olbermann might be on his way out of ESPN as well, per a report 95% chance he doesn't return as his contract is up soon as well. Pretty much ESPN running off anyone who says anything bad about anyone (Simmons, Cowhered, Olbermann)...they want puppets who kiss butt of all professional athletes and commissioners and they want nobody with an original thought. And nobody can challenge anyone ever...as ESPN wants to be buddy buddy with all leagues.

Yeah, this is becoming pretty obvious. I never liked cowherd but like him or not he seemed to give his own opinion regardless of the company line. Apparently that doesn't work for ESPN anymore.

True. HBO gonna open the vault to sign him to a deal

I didn't think HBO paid anyone anything? I mean they give people phenomenal freedom but I didn't think they paid much.

I thought Cowherd was asking stupid questions. With his phony enthusiasm and fake radio voice. I'm not surprised Harbaugh was a less than compelling guest. Two douchebags uncomfortable jerking each other off.

This got me laughing. I tend to side with Cowherd b/c I tend to view football coaches negatively. But it was pretty bad on both ends. I don't quite understand where harbaugh was coming from though in that he absolutely doesn't *have* to do that interview. He's coming on voluntarily but doesn't want to talk at all. Strange and ultimately, as you put it, a sad display of a horrible mass media creation with relatively little imagination interviewing an egomaniac who just decides to be pissy for no reason other than he's a high-profile football coach and for some reason everyone gives them a pass for being total .

According to this, they "only" paid John Oliver $2 million last year. Well below other late night hosts. However, he did just re-up his contract after Stewart announced he was leaving the Daily Show. I'm guessing he used that to get a considerable amount of money.

Dan Patrick, Mad Dog Russo, Rich Eisen there are others

His deal wouldn't strictly be for an on-air talent. HBO has all but stopped their sports department pretty much aside from REAL SPORTS show. They gave up on sports documentaries a few years back, they got rid of Inside the NFL which they had forever, they also got rid of the Costas show, the Joe Buck show...etc. HBO wants back into the sports business and putting Simmons in charge of their documentaries (he did create the ESPN 30 for 30 deal) and let him do a sports/pop culture show that airs monthly or weekly. He would pretty much run the HBO Sports department and get paid as an executive more than just an on-air talent

Interesting.

I guess. I mean, I love Kornheiser and he was an ESPN guy at one point but again he was canned b/c he didn't toe the line. My theory on mass media is that the guys who are the most popular are that way because they are put in some of the few spots that garner a mass audience. And then, even if they were great at one point, they are often either fired or forced to leave those gigs (Stern leaving NBC and KRock) to find a place that allows them to be themselves, or they become watered down shells of what actually made them great (Letterman moving to 11:30; what they tried to make Conan on the tonight show). I guess that doesn't account for the Greenbergs and Lenos of the world -- who just basically specialized in fluff and cliche, but that's the general pattern. Guys who actually have something interesting to say generally have to be creative in finding an outlet that lets them fully explore that creativity (Stern, Simmons, Conan at TBS post-Tonight Show, Adam Carolla, Dan Patrick, etc.).

Maybe Cowherd fits in there for a lot of people. For me, personally, he can't hold my interest for more than a few minutes.

He was asking open ended questions to get him to actually answer a question. Harbaugh didnt even give Colin a chance. From the first question on, you could tell Harbaugh didnt feel like giving an interview

Harbaugh should of just cancelled. I didn't see anything wrong with Colin's questions. He basically was giving Harbaugh another avenue to promote Michgan and Harbaugh is the one coming off looking like a fool. Even Ryen Russillo agreed and, he and Colin disagree about everything.

I thought Rome's schtick kind of peaked with his "Chris Everrett" interview. My question before was asked in all honesty as I had no idea that he still had a national gig. Different strokes for different folks. I mean, even Georgetown has fans.

I didn't listen to the interview, but for those that did I only have one query: would Cowherd's questions have passed the JAB litmus test? Would they have drawn out the warm and fuzzy Jim, or the cantankerous Coach Boeheim? That's how all interviews should be judged. ;)

JAB would've done fine. When he goes on talk shows he knows how to respond. These were not confrontational questions... softballs to get Harbaugh to talk about himself and the program. He chose to give 2-3 word answers that basically indicated that he didn't want to be on the show. Crazy!

you can throw in a few arrogant giggles like a seventh grader might make also.

He also has a primtime TV show on Showtime and does work for the CBS NFL pregame show. Rome is as big as he has ever been
