OT: Penn State to get scholarships back

Absolutely. Its shocking to me. I dont care if my kid grows up and wants to go to PSU for something they might have the best school in the country for ( DOUBTFUL thats possible there)...i wouldnt consider letting anyone in my family adding a single penny to that "institution of learning"

Couldn't agree more. If the same were to happen at Syracuse i would expect current team to be part of the punishment because there is honestly no other way of showing how big of a deal it is without hurting the program in its current state. I hate the argument espn people make about how " these current kids have nothing to do with it" yea but you know what? If they want to support programs that continue to cheat, programs that continue to rape kids etc... then EXPECT to not have a positive light shed on the program. If you don't like that answer...then DONT go to that freakin school. Thats why punishments are created..to teach a lesson.

Which is why I disagree with Thamel's tweet [posted above] 100% -- these punishments were about addressing a culture run amok, where widespread cover ups were used in an attempt to conceal heinous acts to prevent the atrocities from impacting the football program.

And while we all refer to the players as kids, which more or less they are, college sports are basically professional sports these days. If the vast majority of these kids were working out all day and then hitting the books all night, then I get why you'd be really concerned about punishing them. But sports at this level are so serious that it's simply not the same as a bunch of rag tag kids getting together to play football for the JV team in high school. It's intellectually dishonest to refer to them as 'kids' at least in terms of some naive innocence.

And let's not forget -- they were given a free out if they wanted it. I'm not a huge fan of all the transfers these days, but it would seem to me that there should have been at least a dozen or so kids that were sufficiently disgusted by the events that took place to know they should have gotten the hell out of there.

So, not only do they get their schollies fully reinstated by 2015, they are getting an extra 10 for 2016? This can't be right, can it?
Nice catch. Twitter typo

Benching Manziel for 1/2 a game while acknowledging that he did nothing wrong, is what makes me believe the NCAA is completely inept. A complete head scratcher for me.

I feel bad for the lowly D1 program that is about to face the wrath of the NCAA. Someone is going to pay for the leniency afforded to PSU. It's coming.

I guess this means that OSU will go back to trading jerseys and awards for tattoos?

If the NCAA ever tries raising a finger against SU, for any of the so-called investigations (grades, drugs), I'd tell them to kiss my ass if I were the new Chancellor. #clownshow

There are so many things that leave a bad taste about this whole thing, mostly with Ped St, but the one I can't figure out (and I usually defend the media) is all the media support for PSU. Really strange to me. I literally heard Cowherd today say (among other stupid and pointless things), "what is the NCAA going to do -- judge every criminal matter? They're going to punish teams for kids getting DUIs?"

How people say this isn't directly related to football is beyond me.

And for recruits parents -- why are they sending kids to Ped St. again? Really? You're looking at all those schools and settling on Ped St.? No little twinge of 'maybe we should look elsewhere for now ...'? Just bizarre.

I don't quite get the apologetic media coverage of this now. The whole Sandusky situation was centered on a legal case proven in a court of law and all the collateral damage that went along with it. You look at how the media treated the Syracuse basketball program with the Bernie Fine incident, and regardless of what Bernie was or was not into, it was never even brought to trial - yet no apology, nothing from ESPN or anyone else for that matter. It was "oh it didn't go to trial, lets move on and forget about the past year of bashing the Syracuse basketball program, Boeheim, etc and trying to draw parallels to Penn State." I don't really understand how the pendulum swings so far in one direction that the media is going on witch hunts, and now it's swinging so far back in the other direction.

Then again, all you have to do is look at the front page of CNN and that tells you all you need to know about the media. Seems like all people do in this world is assault, rape, maim, or murder one another.

Will the NCAA also give those kids their virginity back?

How long before there is a movement to put paterno's statue back up? (I refuse to use that stupid nickname or capitalize that dirtbags name. No respect from me.)

The Penn State punishment had been the signature moment of Emmert's tenure. This shows how unpopular and over-the-top that punishment was.

Pete. They should get slammed more. Over the top. LOL.

I knew this would never hurt the Penn State program. But I never thought they'd walk away completely unscathed. A complete joke.

Agree with this completely. Unfortunately we seem to be in the minority.

They're still limited to 15 scholarships for this current class.

They get 5 additional schollies for the 2014 class (15 to 20). Those guys are in the 2014 class.

Based on the contrite, humble posts by Ped State fans before our game I'd say they learned their lesson.

</sarcasm>

Those involved should be in jail, including those who hid what was going on. It's just more and more obvious if you have money and power/pull you get to avoid that type of punishment. Hopefully, their days in hell will more than make up for it.

As for scholarships...it seems the fans of schools that are in direct competition with psu are the most angry.

As for the NCAA, you have a better chance of hoping for world peace than that organization actually doing their job correctly and fitting the crime with a just punishment.

This recruiting cycle is the 2013-2014 cycle. They get 5 back for the 2014-2015 cycle which is the next recruiting class. They are still at 15 for this cycle.

This article lays it out:

I don't read it that way. Sounds like they can have five additional players on scholarship in the 2014-2015 year. Current recruiting class just started their senior year and will graduate spring 2014 and would be part of the 2014-2015 freshman class.

Penn state columnists are already asking BoB if he will add more recruits to the 2014 class or bank them all for a huge 2015 class.

Eh, I don't know. Mitchell was the one who did the baseball report on PED use that included no Red Sox. I believe he's from New England and fairly close with Sox owner John Henry. I have no idea if that played into it or if the Sox simply hid the PED use better, but that's a fishy one -- and I'm a sox fan.
I grew up in Maine, where Mitchell is from and still resides for the most part, and his reputation is better than almost anyone I can think of. And Mainers love to hate politicians. Point taken on the steroid report, i was living in Boston at the time this came out and I remember everyone being really scared of the outcome and then really happy that no on on the sox was named - there was some criticism since I think Mitchell was either a small share owner or on the board or something of the team - but I recall critics of his initial appointment came out afterwords and said the report was fair. Of course it came out later that Manny was using steroids the whole time (man that guy was fun to watch at the plate)... But in any case sticking to my guns on Mitchell - friends of mine know him very well and integrity is always the word that comes up first in reference to George. I don't know the details of the Penn state situation, but it's possible that the initial reasons for the sanctions were not sufficiently proven --- sort of like trying to convict someone for insider trading which is difficult to prove when you know you have them on tax evasion but neglect to bring charges on that front. It's also possible that blame flowed in the wrong directions, again I don't know the details. Mitchell would have been very detail oriented in his work and would have made sure that substantial changes had been made by the University before making his recommendation. the outcome still sucks, but I would bet on Mitchell being a fair arbiter 10 times out of 10.

Immediately got a link sent to me by a friend who went to Penn State. In their minds this rationalizes how they were the victim and that Paterno and the football program did nothing wrong.

It's sickening.

Yup, just reinforces the stupidity of that place and the fan base. They don't get it.

So my friend posted the link about getting the scholarships back.

He prefaced his post with: "Best birthday present ever!!!"

Actually I think you're right now that I re-read the material. The NCAA is mentioning academic year not recruiting year so if they are getting back to 20 for the 2014-2015 academic year that would be the class that's currently being recruited. Ugh.

Yeah it's not something I want to be right about. The coaches just have to do a good job circling the wagons and keeping the cult away from our recruits.
