From 2011-2020
Michigan missed the NCAA tournament 1 time(they were making the tournament this season before it got cancelled)
They made the sweet 16 the 3 previous tournaments.
2 conference tournaments in 17 and 18.
Every season but 2015-2016 the last 6 years they were relevant.

We are below Michigan now. We missed the tournament 3 times.

Maryland we are better than because Final Fours matter.
They are more relevant during the regular season. Our postseasons make things slightly to our side better.

6 consecutive mediocre regular seasons though have hurt our standing nationally.
We aren’t a pillar anymore. We are a dangerous team when we make the tournament.

The reason we aren’t as dangerous anymore is the talent isn’t stacked on the roster anymore.

Just like Florida State had to move on from Bowden Syracuse is going to have to do the same with Boeheim.

He is 75. He is impossible to replace and program will take a step back when he retires. It won’t destroy the program though. The program will be fine as long as the talent is found by the next coach.
Xs and Os will not be the same but again in basketball coaching isn’t as important as football.

I wouldn't even assume that we will take a step back when someone new takes over. We still have a program that just finished 3rd in revenue out of 300+ schools. Things have gotten stale as would be expected when someone stays in one job for 40+ years. Not a lot of 75 year olds exist in the world that are still doing the same job they were doing when they were 35 and certainly aren't doing it with the same level of enthusiasm. Its just the way life is.

First of all JB is a university employee. If he’s not doing his job and the team and been substandard for multiple years he should be held accountable like any other employee. This is the same man who openly admitted that he under recruited the center position for years and you are defending subpar performance. Time for him to go. Since you know so much why don’t you ask the AAU coaches what they think

If you followed this program like you're stating, you know JB talks out of his a$$ all the time. Case in point, he just said the other day that we'll roll into next year with this roster...They are trying to find 1-2 more players. All because it isn't being broadcasted on zags or 247, doesnt mean it isn't happening.

You and the other nitwit on here are just whining and crying. Yes, are we ALL a bit disappointed in the teams we've fielded lately? of course. So are the HC and Assistants. They thought Carey would be a stud right now and that OB would have been here this year. The entire team thought Sid would be far ahead of where he is. JB isn't getting with the times of players staying 3-4 years and "Waiting their turn". This mass exodus has him shook a bit especially since BG was unexpected.

But for all of the bad, there's been some pretty positive things on JBs recruiting - he gets marginal talent drafted. OB was on no one's radar to play in the NBA and made it, for all of Buddy's fault, everyone thought he wouldnt be an ACC player. The kid is doing pretty well year 2. 3 star Joey looked pretty good this year and will only get better. Marek, good hit. Hughes transfer, huge get.

A lot of AAU coaches still regard Syracuse as a great program. Brewster still loves us, Team Final etc etc.

and Gonzaga's HC in waiting is the hottest recruiter outside of the US. Legit probably the best international scout out there, so not surprised at ALL to see them hit on a number of recruits.
Gonzaga has also become a transfer hotbed, which usually leads to wins, wins, wins because you're having upperclassmen. I wish our coaching staff would explore that market more.

We'll see if that 5 star even goes to gonzaga or skips going there.

I don't really disagree with much of what you wrote... we've been below Michigan and Maryland in the past as well, these things are cyclical for pretty much everybody outside of the true blue-blood programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas.

We're still a top program, it's not like we've suddenly morphed into Marquette or DePaul or Pitt.

In theory if its a level playing field for recruiting (assuming nothing illegal)
The program is a sleeping giant waiting to come alive
largest venue, Top 4 in revenue, top notch practice facility, premier conference, regional location to recruit NYC, NJ, Philly, Baltimore, DC etc

So why is the program not winning more? obviously sanctions had an effect and then hop leaving but for the present its a 75 yr old coach who can be a bit stubborn at times, isn't making necessary staff changes (all former players he can't dump out of loyalty), strength and conditioning, etc.

One could argue if they make the right hire and bring a new set of eyes and thinking, the program could take off once again. Granted who ever takes it won't have the hall of fame level of in game experience as JB but they will bring change which might inject life into the program.

We have become Seton Hall of the old Big East in the regular season while maintaining being Syracuse when we make the tournament.

Philly is now closed .Hop was and still is the man in Philly.

Agreed -- that's nonsense talk.

That is one possible outcome out of many alternatives. Most people [not directed at Alsacs] are just change-averse, and don't understand that "risk" also can lead to opportunity.

This article by a Duke basketball fan site projects an incoming freshman starting at center for them in 2020-21, with Tapé coming off the bench:

To return to discussing Patrick Tape...

This Duke site considers him so insignificant that they don't even discuss him. They just mention his name along with the other projected backup center.

We have become Seton Hall of the old Big East in the regular season while maintaining being Syracuse when we make the tournament.
I don't think that's a very good comparison at all. In the old Big East days - from 1987-88 through 2012-13 (when we left), Seton Hall had a losing conference record 14 times! We've never come close to bottoming out like Seton Hall did in 1996-97 - when they were 10-18 overall and 5-13 conference - capping a run of 4 consecutive losing seasons in the conference.

When Penn State Oklahoma State blows us out that’s not a problem ? Any team with a center at any level looks like shaq against us, but that not a problem.

Think Penn State was pretty good, right? Just outside of the Top 25. Getting blown out by Oklahoma State was no fun, but that happened early in the season. We also got blown out by UVA in game 1. Later in the season (young team that got better) we beat UVA on the road.

59 Syracuse ACC 18-14. Numbers don't lie

You're right. Numbers don't lie. Here are some other numbers:

  • We won 10 ACC games
  • We won 6 ACC road games, 3 in a row
  • We lost 2 heartbreaker's at home (ND & VT) to start the season
  • We lost 2 heartbreakers (Clemson and FSU) on the road
  • We lost 2 games without Hughes, our best player
  • We blew out 2 ACC teams on road/neutral courts
  • We won 1 ACC tournament game
  • We beat UNC by 29 points
So 18 wins, could have been 21 or 22, with a very young team. We were terrible up until ACC play and became a much better team as the season went on. We saw every returning player improve and saw a couple of freshman that look to be pretty good players.

We were not going to make the tournament, but we were not that far away.

I'm not going to sit and cry about a few kids that transferred, because they were not going to play anyways (well maybe BG). I also think the 6-6 Richmond kid will be better for us than any that left. Hoping we grab a couple transfers as well.

Stop following the program if all you’re doing is crying and whining. I know JB personally and he has ALOT of faults but one thing for sure is...we would never have a year like UNC just had.
I kinda think that if Eli had missed as many games as Cole Anthony, we would have had a worse year than UNC just had.

Was thinking that myself.

They went like 1-10 when he returned lol
Talking about a "year."
What do you think our record is if Eli is gone for 11 games? The comment was about the concept of it 'not being possible to have a season like UNC just had... because JB' (versus Roy, ostensibly).

Pitino just got the job. Look who he his bringing in. Coming off of bad press and scandal yet off to a flying start. We specialize in excuses not results.

Who did he get? 6 guys, but none with any ratings?
Are these cats better than what 247 is saying?

Crazy. This 7'1" kid... not too shabby. Would probably look pretty good in our 2-3.

Oh boy I was waiting for this one. That’s it guys, Pitino pulling in recruits at Iona is clearly a sign that JB just doesn’t have it anymore. No one thinks JB is perfect, stop acting like others think he is.

Patrick Tape picked Duke because they have no established centers currently on their roster and two big men coming in that are general unknowns outside their rankings, which btw aren’t the top 10 kinda guys they’re accustomed to bringing in. Cuse legit has three centers on their roster and that doesn’t include Marek who can play center in a pinch. Sidibe deserves the benefit of the doubt after years of working through injuries, especially after things seemed to click for him him the last 6+ games. Edwards also has most pretty damn excited. If we got Tape, one of sidibe or edwards probably transfers and then you’d spin that to disparage JB.

Totally get why Tape would pick Duke. A shame you only make out his decision to be a testament to a HOF coach being out of touch with the game. The world doesnt revolve around Syracuse Basketball, the kid picked what is objectively the best program in the country at a position they are thin in, in his home state!

But let’s also remember that Pitino is getting a bunch of recruits. Ugh, we’re screwed.
