If there paid they are employees. All their benefits should be taxed (scholarships, room and board, pay and incidentals)
This whole argument look at how much the coaches and schools get versus the player is ridiculous. If people want to say it’s a business let’s look at google or apple or any company. The ceo makes millions. The business makes billions. The workers make a set salary which pails in comparison to the ceo and business.
The athlete gets a free education, top quality coaching, room and board and a stipend. When they leave school they have zero debt compared to most regular students with over $300,000. That is a life time substantial benefit.
I hear that they have to go to school. No it’s a choice to play sports in college. They do not have to go. Every league except football has a minor league. College should not be the minor leagues for the nfl. A player can go out and get coaching, conditioning and pay for it themselves or higher an agent instead of going to college.
If you start paying players and number of schools will end the sports program. All Olympic sports will be gone. Football and basketball at mid majors, division 2and 3 will be eliminated. You already saw with covid the razor thin margin in athletics. Schools will not loose money to maintain sports.
So in the end we will all be watching 10 college teams and the pros. Yeah.
