I can't help but to wonder if penalties are a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts; like once you get the reputation within the conference for having lots of penalties, the refs are more likely to call them. Like how it is in hockey with individual players.

I think there might be something to that and not just for SU, just in sports in general.

I think the difference is we didn’t have four or five motion penalties a game. It seemed like every time we came out of a timeout we had a false start.

I think the difference was actually that the offense was able to convert many, many 3rd and long plays to overcome penalties.

Remember the back-to-back (2) timeouts that Babers called and then on the down coming out of the 2nd TO, we got a false start pelanty (or maybe it was delay of game??) !!! LOL

Well, with Barron graduating those numbers are sure to improve.

lots of stupid penalties at inopportune times, unacceptable for a captain, saw it happen too often with Barron

I got the NFL breakdown for 2023, which was the easiest thing to find. Percentage wise for penalties called in the NFL:

O: 49.8%
D: 38.2%
ST: 12%

Syracuse this year:

O: 45.16%
D: 37.6%
ST: 17.2%

So Special Teams were definitely out of whack.

But worse than the penalties called on us is the penalties called on our opponents in conference play:

1. Syracuse 34
2. Virginia 46
3. Boston College 46
4. Miami 47
5. Pitt 49
6. Georgia Tech 50
7. NC State 50
8. Clemson 50
9. Virginia Tech 52
10. Duke 53
11. UN C57
12. Louisville 61
13. Florida State 62
14. Wake Forest 63

Talk about being a MASSIVE outlier. You could make a decent, but not iron-clad, case for bias based on the penalties and opponents penalties rankings, with old Big East schools around the top of both lists.
