Penn Gameday...

also only coach i saw so any kind of emotion or talk to players was coach O. Few times he was telling kittleberge he wasn’t doing what he was suppose to. Coach O wasn’t screaming at guys at times but he was talking in raised voice trying to light fire. Gait all see him do was stand n smile even if was bad. He talk with refs but mostly none of coach besides O talked much to players n none gave them any lip for poor passing or poor effort.

Mean the passing without anyone on them was into ground n had to save it at times. Penn was begging team to take midrange to longer shots n we didn’t n if did was high wide or save. Ball has to move faster n quickly. Also to much watching guys dodge instead moving to open space. This offense needs to get on track in a hurry. This D has been solid but can’t play D the entire game. Thought beck down low n chuck baxk at lsm was big. Chuck was doing what he does in middle of field.

Last thing this team needs a leader. Someone needs to get these guys hyped pumped or pissed off. I’ve never seen a team just stand so still during a game before. Penn players on bench all hyped for most of game on even small plays. Someone needs to step up n be the leader.

Sure some notice ochoa did not touch the field at all from what i saw. Mccarthy mostly played dmid. Thought beck did great job at close also n gave us chuck back at lsm.

Really need to fix the offense not sure what they’re even trying to do half time. Just looks unorganized n lost. Also when can’t make simple passes clean you can see hesitation on trying to thread needle or skip pass. But these are plays gotta be able to make. Joey had nice one to geb maby lofted it lil to much. But there were good amounts of looks for skips passes or threading it but as said barely make simple passes n could see they didn’t wanna risk those kind of passes.

Grant was just warm up but kraftson looked really good. Really like to give that kid some runs. Maby even give rawson some runs also. This O needs to find themslves. As said to much standing still and watching. Not enough off ball movement not enough quick passing. Also guys need to move their feet with passing n catching. Specially when teams pressing out a lot. Can’t just stand there waiting for ball so second ya catch it dude right there to check ya. Move your dam feet run to ball.

Had some good looks n either went wide or high or good save. Need to bury our chances. Also felt times when got good look n goalie n D moving we took to long to get shot off. Sometimes gotta catch n rip in one. Had few where we caught n ripped it but again missed.

Very happy with defense n even mccools play. But the offense and faceoff need to get better. Not sure if offense use to getting ball so much from faceoffs n lately not happening their playing diff or just not getting into groove or what. But this offense is to talented to look how they have. Also can we clear out n give space to dodgers. Get times trying to set pick but lately seems turns into a double n we have no idea what to do with ball. Also feel we telegraphing our pics to much making it simple to read n go around.

Wasn’t great hustle today maby towards end was least better. But needs to be hustle all game. Can’t keep digging urself hole n trying to climb out of it. Need to start game fast n finish fast n strong. Need to give it everything you got on every play. Not sure some guys are worn down as did see a lot of guys bending over or even quick getting checked out by medical stuff. But need to rest recover n start playing with some intensity.

On to hopkins.

One other positive is winning the gb battle 23-18 despite the 12-6 advantage Penn had on face offs. The guys were battling out there despite the boneheaded sloppy plays. Did a good job creating second chances with gbs.

Still think the O figures it out when people get more settled into their roles, but will the boneheaded choices improve too? It’s amazing how many settled possessions were wasted on lazy turnovers passing the ball, not just poor sets/spacing. Can’t have that on a day where you are getting crushed at the dot. As said earlier, it was good to see the seniors make the plays down the stretch.

I do think you bring up a good point.

I wonder how much the constant lineup tinkering is affecting offensive chemistry and output.

Hard to develop a flow when you've always got someone new next to you. On the flip side, for the seniors, they should be able to figure it out.

The first goal n even dwans goal we attacked early while both teams subbing. Why we don’t do that more is unkown. May not always have numbers but do have more space n team not fully settled. If not getting transition or winning 6v6 gotta try to take advantage of 4-4 or even 5-5.

Other than Dwan or T-Mac, are there any defensive players you'd trust to take a shot or feed the crease?

There aren't any Sam Englishes or Matt Abbotts on this year's squad.

Those wins against BU and St. Joe's are actually going to end up being massive. BU just beat Navy.
Insane to say, but those two wins might be more impactful than MD when it’s all said and done. I respect the h*ll out of Tillman, they will improve as they go, but the Terps are not a title contender this year the way it stands currently.

Blowing out BU, Joe’s, Penn are all better and more impactful wins than I thought they’d be in the preseason

I’m sure Rawson will be a good player, but the difference between him and hiltz on extra man is immense.
The 2 things that were most obvious to me going into the season were that we did not adequately replace Hiltz and English. For all the talk about Anderson being a great threat and deserving play ahead of Deere last year, I don’t think he’s done much YTD. Hottle/Mcintee/Hahn have played OK but have not quite replaced English either.

So losing two of our six best offensive players, plus Deere as well, and doing nothing offensively in the portal, I expected us to be a contender like last year, but did not see us as an improved team.

Joey is the same guy he always was, so nothing he’s done there is much different than he’s done in the past. And the team has always been undisciplined and sloppy, (11 unforced turnovers today), so that hasn’t changed either.

Mullen is surprising for sure, but perhaps the late whistle issue is something he can overcome. (he was still 46% today, not the end of the world, but the problem was going early, keeping him from the next face off). So of the times he didn’t jump, he was actually 6 of 9.

What I do find most surprising is that other than Leo, no one seems to be able to consistently get their hands-free off of a dodge or pick. We are working way too hard to get clean looks. The last few games we’ve gone through 15 minute stretches where we literally did not get one good look. Hiltz could get his hands-free in a phone booth. More than anything, That’s what our offense is missing.

Yes guys arnt catching and shooting all in one n giving goalie time to set n see ball. Also hiltz moved all over the place. Seems really fin only one who cuts as other guys mostly go middle just to bump back up or out. Bear is good n solid dodger but don’t seem have much of a shot what so ever. Or haven’t seen him take an actual shot shot not one off dodge 4 feet from goal or a dive. Also he needs be able to pass off dodge. losing hiltz feeding ability on top of his skip passes n constantly moving n able to quick rip it has been tough.

Where has joeys mid range shot off pick been ? Why we still not taking extra step up field for more cage to shoot at. Other guys other than finn gotta be able to set picks right too. They some guys set picks seems make it easier for double team rather then helping free either of our guys.

Hottle mcintee hahn haven’t been hurting us but also need to step it up more. Hottle came out hott but hasn’t dont much last two games. Also why don’t we invert mcintee n hahn more like do hottle. Always felt harder for D having to turn to look behind then in front.

Also on early offense not always a true dmid who would have to make pass plus still have all 3 our attack guys. But i would trust t-mac , chuck k , hahn even jake to play early offense. Also dont have to pass to crease. Mostly ment when teams haven’t fully subbed alot more space to work with. Where think bear or even joey could take advantage with finn crashing also. Wouldnt say force anything but least press a bit see if n what D does. Even play sub mind games a bit. When offense or 6v6 out of groove gotta try anything get something going.

Mullen not sure what his deal is, def needs to stop this early jump. But sometimes feel he’s more focused getting ball out fast before actually having ball. Then again with not much help from our wings can see that reasoning. Wings def gotta step it up. Just hope we figure out this offense cause putting up 7-9 goals isn’t gonna cut it most times. O had got to bury the ball specially when our D gets stops. Honestly may be long shot but jake use to take faceoffs is it worth giving him 1-2 or mullen n angleo struggling?

Either way lost to harvard (really beat ourselves that game) n princeton who are two very good teams n easy top 10 teams. Bu st joes n maryland wins may be good feel like Bu n joe prob being in n out of top 20 for most of year n hopefully maryland can help. But gotta take these next 3 games as two be solid wins cause gtown n acc games arnt gonna be easy. ND has looked solid n wouldnt look pass duke or even uva n unc will be hard no matter what.

Marylands schedule lightens up big time the next few weeks. They play Delaware and UVA, should win both games. Then its the B10. They do open with PSU but then play Michigan, OSU, Rutty and Hop.

I suspect they go 5-2 at worst in the final 7. Them beating PSU would be a big help.

I believe you are talking about Maryland here?

Yup, edited

I'm not ready to count MD out yet, but something def seems off with them. Their offense is being talked about a lot so far, but on the other end of the field it seems like it's more than just replacing Logan in goal, their defense in general just seems out of sorts.

Are some of the fo issues due to outside? Mullen is great on turf but is the outside affecting the clamp or something.
Also if the ball is wet is that affecting passing/shooting?

They've played and lost to three really good teams. They're at the moment clearly not as good as was suspected, but by no means a bad team. I think as Jeremy mentioned they'll have quite the upward trajectory based off the structure of their season.

Some injuries and finding out how to arrange new players taking their toll along with the tough schedule.

This outcome is bound to happen when all the top teams schedule each other OOC. Someone's going to get the worst of it.

Then you'll have teams like Duke (who could be very good but we won't know until April) skating in with an inflated record and high ranking because they've scheduled almost no top programs.

But then they might find themselves very rested and well oiled by the time their tougher games roll around, while the other teams could be beat up.

The science/art of scheduling. . .
