Class of 2018 PF Bryce Golden (MD) to Butler

He’s solid but not a stud or game changer.

Agreed. Great pickup, exactly what we need, a solid piece of the puzzle to "grow" on down the road, but not necessarily a game changer.

BUT -- a very solid add at this stage who singlehandledly addresses next year's team's two biggest risks -- lack of depth at forward, and the need to add an insurance big in case Sidibe is still impaired.

Golden might only play spot minutes next season, but he'd add lineup flexibility and could add value in practice.

I would be ecstatic if we get this kid.
He would have no pressure next year and it would be a development prospect for 2-3 years down the road.
We need this kid for depth and if we get him good job.
We need to use scholarships and he would give us a legit injury protection body.

on a scale of 1-10, 10 the highest, what are the chances of landing the stud Bryce Golden?

on a scale of 1-10, 10 the highest, is Bryce Golden a game changer recruit who can help JB cut down the nets one more time in April?
To the second question, we were like a 6-7 with Bazely. I like golden... but he's a very clear step down.

Jerry Meyer and his crew at 24/7 this morning have Golden as SYR 100% in their crystal ball. For whatever that's worth.

I might be the only one who thinks this (which probably means I'm way off base), but if Golden signed his NLI he must sit out the 2018-19 season when he transfers. His coach getting fired is irrelevant in the eyes of the NCAA.

"NLI PENALTY: If a prospective student-athlete does not attend the signing institution or attends that institution for less than one full academic year, and enrolls at another NLI institution, he or she may not represent the second institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until completing one academic year in residence at the NLI member institution. Additionally, the prospective student-athlete will lose one season of competition in all sports. While serving the NLI penalty, the prospective student-athlete is permitted to practice and receive athletics aid, if allowed by the institution."

Is it possible that's if he isn't granted the release?

Pretty sure he already got it. Schools wouldn't be able to be in contact if he was still signed, correct?

I believe you are correct.

Alex Lomax signed his NLI to Wichita St but asked out in March to follow Penny Hardaway to Memphis. WSU said ok and he'll be free to go, with no penalty.

Devonte Graham attempted to get out of his NLI to Appalachian St. They said no to the release, so he went to prep school for a year before going to Kansas.

explanation

Then you have Braxton Beverly who had started classes at Ohio State before they let Thad Matta go last June. The NCAA granted him eligibility for this past season at the last minute after negative PR. Ohio State had released him from his NLI back in June when he wanted out.

As long as Pitt doesn't act a fool, Golden should be fine playing for whoever he wants this upcoming season...

I'll just say... even if he has to sit, I'm not opposed to bringing him in. I think he's a good player that can be productive for a long time.

Ya pretty sure this happens all the time. UW/Hopkins had to deal with multiple big time recruits (Michael Porter, Blake Harris) asking for a release from their NLI after Romar was fired.

If the school grants the release, the players are eligible to play at another school without sitting out a year.
