Class of 2023 PG Garwey Dual (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/11/26)

The meltdown is crazy over this kid. He is essentially very similar to Kadary who everyone has lamented for years we couldn’t keep. Yes the shooting is a concern I’ll share but if we are adding a high scoring wing or still pursuing one this makes a lot of sense. I’d say stay tuned for how the rest shapes up.
Again, entirely possible that things just clicked for Dual this past year and it'll transition smoothly to the ACC, but his first two years when he was playing in the Big East, he averaged 8 points per 40 minutes which is lower than everyone on our team this past season with the exception of Fennell, Zephir, Suoare, and Noah Lobdell. For reference, Kadary was at 12 his freshman year with us, which was his lowest of his 5 years (and by comparison, Dual hit 12.6 this year).

Dual is definitely a pass-first player, which is fine, but I just don't think he was really capable of going anywhere with the ball until he transferred down to the Southland.

But again, Dual came into college as a toolsy project and it's entirely possible that things just finally clicked for him.

Edit: Also, I've said it previously, but I personally yearn for us to return to the days of playing suffocating defense and good enough offense. The beginning to this past season when we were playing our butts off on defense was the first time in forever that I've actually enjoyed watching our games. The idea of having a guy like this at the point of attack on defense is very exciting.

Can you name a pickup you haven’t liked? This board has a tendency to hype up every pickup and then the team sucks anyway, rinse repeat.
I’m iffy on the Australian kid. I’m not hyping him up at all. I just said I like it. Everyone here needs to calm down. It’s like we don’t trust the coaches everyone loved we got.

I wonder if we are still in on Cox as well or not etc and whether maybe Moesch isn’t coming in etc etc..

It’s funny he’s similar to Copeland who everyone complained we lost. Now we get this kid and people hate him.

not for nothing, but -

We made the Final Four in 2013 with 2 guards who both shot under 30% from 3.

MCW & RoboTriche.

But both were excellent defenders.

The only accurate volume 3pt shooter on that squad was Dirty South.
He hit nearly 40%.

I get that that was forever ago, but -
you don’t need 3-4 guys to hit 40%+ from 3 to be successful.

Lots of different ways to skin the cat.

In fairness his efficiency has jumped pretty noticeably each year, including year 1 to 2 in the Big East. I don’t think anyone is under the impression that this is going to be our first option scoring wise.

I don’t necessarily agree with the “it’s easier to teach offense than defense” take that was mentioned. But I do understand it to an extent.

When you’re young it’s absolutely easier to teach defense than offense. But if you’re already playing high level D1 basketball and are a bad defender there is almost certainly a component of it that revolves around lack of effort or athleticism. Those deficiencies are really difficult to overcome.

I’m in a “wait and see” approach on this guy and the team as a whole. If they land a big-time scorer in the portal at some point I’ll feel optimistic about the team’s direction.
