You don't think Joe proved he is worthy of starting last year? I couldn't disagree more. I would argue that he shouldn't play point and will do even better this year at his natural position. He played very well last year despite being asked to do way too much.
I sincerely hope Girard is never the only "ball handler" in the game at any point this season.

We lost at least four games because we could barely inbound the ball this past year. It was the number one contributor to a painful season. Girard was a big reason for that, having him leading a team starting four subpar ball handlers.

He shot it well. He’d get some nice steals here and there, but the defense isn’t there overall.

He’s certainly a starter on this team though. Right now, he looks like he’ll probably be our second best player.

Don’t think he starts on too many typical SU teams of the past though, and we need to get the program back to a level where a guy like him isn’t typically a starter.

He wasn't the inbounder, as I recall.

laz sims was terrific for us and he was arguably the worst backcourt outside shooter that we ever had.

i am with u, luv q from the highlights !!!!!
He shot 36% his last year and improved every year he was here. I think you're wrong.

Z shot 35% from 3 as a Jr. and 36% as a Sr. He tended not to shoot unless the team was going cold, in which case he would shoot and with accuracy. He was also a highly skilled ball handler. There is a reason he played for the Globetrotters. Z was one of our best point guards.

He being the "best" ball handler against any kind of pressure is a recipe for disaster.

How many of his turnovers were dribbled of his knee under light pressure? Even one is extremely frustrating, especially when it directly contributes to us losing a game.

Coaching and time and he has the opportunity to blossom into a very fine PG for us!

I hope Copeland redshirts unless something happens to one of the other guards where they'll be out for a while. I see him as behind Girard, Torrence, Mintz and even Taylor at guard this year. If one of the true guards gets injured, the other two play 37 and Taylor picks up the other couple minutes. Copeland could be very good, what a waste if he plays 37 minutes total with 20 DNPCD this year and then we don't get a later year when he could be great.

MCW measurables, and possibly similar athleticism and areas to improve as a freshman (tighten the handle and work on the jumper). Would be amazing if he had a similar career trajectory. Obviously we all remember his defensive prowess, was tenacious and a leader that made the zone viable.
MCW muchhhhh more athletic. Copeland plays no defense as of now. Staff needs to get on him. How he adjusts to the game speed of college will be interesting. Boom or bust type imho

The day of the redshirt is past. Everybody plays, portals, or goes pro if they are any good. We were very fortunate Benny was ok w a small role and returned. I would not count on that happening too often.

we need to find a role for this kid this season so that he stays and stars down the road. QC will need play at least 10 to 15 mpg. Maybe top of the zone defensive specialist at his size while his o game matures.

I used to use that move. It’s great for splitting two iffy defenders and leave them grabbing air.

Yep. It's much easier doing so as a smaller guard I will say too.

100%. Redshirts should only happen these days by the player's request or due to injury.

Copeland provides a level of size and skill that's extremely rare and stands out in this recruiting class. We need to find a role for him.

But we know how JB do.

I think you are largely correct. It will be rare for kids to redshirt going forward, although I think the "only one free transfer" rule might present some kids with years off to work on their game.

However, Copeland was extremely excited to come here. No convincing needed (unless he convinced us!). He could be the rare exception to the no redshirt rule. Especially if he sees he's the fifth guard in a three guard rotation after a few weeks of practice.

I doubt he sees himself as a fifth guard.

As high as everybody is on Mintz, he is unproven. QC probably thinks he can beat JM out.

He will battle to be part of the three guard rotation. Maybe JB even expands to a four guard rotation.

No argument from me and I never advocated for him to start!
