Coaching and time and he has the opportunity to blossom into a very fine PG for us!
I hope Copeland redshirts unless something happens to one of the other guards where they'll be out for a while. I see him as behind Girard, Torrence, Mintz and even Taylor at guard this year. If one of the true guards gets injured, the other two play 37 and Taylor picks up the other couple minutes. Copeland could be very good, what a waste if he plays 37 minutes total with 20 DNPCD this year and then we don't get a later year when he could be great.

MCW measurables, and possibly similar athleticism and areas to improve as a freshman (tighten the handle and work on the jumper). Would be amazing if he had a similar career trajectory. Obviously we all remember his defensive prowess, was tenacious and a leader that made the zone viable.
MCW muchhhhh more athletic. Copeland plays no defense as of now. Staff needs to get on him. How he adjusts to the game speed of college will be interesting. Boom or bust type imho

The day of the redshirt is past. Everybody plays, portals, or goes pro if they are any good. We were very fortunate Benny was ok w a small role and returned. I would not count on that happening too often.

we need to find a role for this kid this season so that he stays and stars down the road. QC will need play at least 10 to 15 mpg. Maybe top of the zone defensive specialist at his size while his o game matures.

100%. Redshirts should only happen these days by the player's request or due to injury.

Copeland provides a level of size and skill that's extremely rare and stands out in this recruiting class. We need to find a role for him.

But we know how JB do.

I think you are largely correct. It will be rare for kids to redshirt going forward, although I think the "only one free transfer" rule might present some kids with years off to work on their game.

However, Copeland was extremely excited to come here. No convincing needed (unless he convinced us!). He could be the rare exception to the no redshirt rule. Especially if he sees he's the fifth guard in a three guard rotation after a few weeks of practice.

I doubt he sees himself as a fifth guard.

As high as everybody is on Mintz, he is unproven. QC probably thinks he can beat JM out.

He will battle to be part of the three guard rotation. Maybe JB even expands to a four guard rotation.

No argument from me and I never advocated for him to start!

The old man HAS to shift philosophy. The old days of a “6-man rotation and a cloud of dust” are done.
I’ve said it before, if he can’t adjust to the new reality, then we run the risk of morphing into a “portal development program”, one that preps guys who’ll just leave after a year or two.
There’s no reason he can’t get kids some PT and watch them grow into legit players. It’s gonna take a lot more patience on his part, and here’s hoping he can do it. JMHO

He’s going to try that one time in a game and it will get stolen and JB will have a heart attack lol I can’t wait for it...
Do you want Coach to die, or just like a show? :)

Copeland is going to be a love hate relationship with JB, which is why I strongly suspect he won't play as a freshman with three good options in front of him:

Girard gets more love than any kid since GMac not named Boeheim. He's also our best player, if nowhere near our best NBA prospect.

Torrence took his lumps and worked his ass off for the team playing no minutes AFTER transferring home.

Mintz is an old school player who seems skilled and very efficient in his game. Decent passer, excellent scorer. (Did I mention old school game, which might appeal to JB?)

Plus, while Taylor has grown into a forward's body, in a few ways he's a Buddy clone, so he might be the first "guard" off the bench if things get wild, even over Copeland. Our patented three guard rotation might not have room for Copeland even after injury to a starter.

Meanwhile, Copeland is extremely physically talented, but has a lot of flash and commensurate wildness to his game. More importantly, it's like his coach told him to avoid defense in high school.

Yup.

And history shows our 4th guard won’t play at all once January hits.

Hope he handles it, develops, and has a great sophomore year starting alongside Mintz.

Especially when the guys playing 35-40 mpg aren’t that good.

Sharing the ball usually refers to those players on the court ,this year it should be mean time on the court.

Coming soon...

I know I mentioned it in the summer workouts thread about his D but I am very curious to see what leaks out around him once he gets here. Being around such a two way player like Mintz should have good habit benefits to him.
There seems to be big fight in this dog! I’m confident with the right coaching he’ll come through. He needs guidance
