Pitt Postgame: all eyes on SUMBB

I mean is Rickie really that thick that he needs to be benched and have other QBs included in the press conference for him to get the message? Maybe it’s more like easing Carney into the role moreso than trying to send a msg to Rickie. Or both? Sigh
If your going to ease your backup qb into the role you give him a few series not a few plays. To me and I could be wrong but it reeked more of message.

I expect to look like a competent football team.

Between the complete lack of offense and the baffling decisions by the staff like the end of the half, we don't look competent.
no one knows what the right strategy is to get a competent backup in this day and age

Oklahoma St is a disaster after the starter got hurt
Penn state is horrible

I asked chat gpt for examples, that's it. Anyone know of others?

You can tell with what they did with Carney that he didn't get any reps during the bye week. With how poor Rickie has been that's inexcusable. Fran keeps saying he's young. I know guys are playing for 7 and 8 seasons lately, but he's a junior, an upperclassman, that shared a qb room with Jaydon Daniels. He's also had almost 2 full seasons at Syracuse. Presumably, he was the backup last season. He had all Spring and Fall camp. I'm not buying the "young" and we should expect improvements. That's total BS, but something he probably needs to say to keep hope alive. I really hope he doesn't believe it, because he is not a P4 starting QB, or back up.

He’s been on campus for 10 months after being a 4 year starter in high school. If he’s legitimately not ready then whose fault is that?

If he’s not capable - that’s a different conversation.
I don’t care why. But he looked like art carney out there ..

I maintain that Collins doesn't do anything until the defense calls things off on him. There's some distance between that and competent offense.

I would bet Carney got a ton of reps over the break. 1st team reps and time on the weekly install/planning specifically for Pitt? Not so much.

It's hard to appreciate how difficult the position is to play/develop/coach. There is so much that goes into it. QB has to master ALL elements of the game. They have to understand fronts, box play, gap assignments and scheme, zone assignments and scheme, they have to master protection and the lingo for the system to communicate assignments in real time and the calls are usually shuffled week to week, they have to study personnel and memorize match up charts, they have to practice movement, footwork, eye discipline, throwing mechanics, cadence, timing... this alone takes years to develop fluidity to the point where they are not thinking, they are doing basic things on instinct. Protecting the ball when scrambling, turning right or left correctly, 1 step, 3 step, 5 step drops, eye discipline when moving in the pocket, maneuver in the pocket, seeing pressure peripherally... this stuff takes thousands of hours before it is automatic and not eating up bandwidth in your brain so that you can get to things like reading coverage, identifying keys, setting protections, recognizing spacing, and making the right throw.

There's a reason why guys like Tommy Devito and CDRW struggle for years before finally putting it all together and having some success on the field. I mean look at the NFL and how many QBs have been bouncing around the league for years before having a modicum of success. Guys like Sam Darnold and Geno Smith strike me as good examples. These guys had incredible tools when they were young. It's literally taken years to get many of the basics down to the point where they are able to process and make the right decisions.

That only worked because Pitt was sitting back and there were running lanes open. It’s no surprise at all that the only times Collins has looked remotely competent is late in the game when the D is playing soft to prevent quick scores. That’s a practice D, something it’s obvious Collins is best against.

When the D is aggressive, quarters 1 through 3, Collins is terrible. And it ain’t gonna change. He stinks.
He was a mess against Colgate and Duke and only showed signs of life against SMU and Pitt late in the game - spot on.

If only we could hypnotize defenses to play like they are up 3 scores starting the game 😁

None. If a backup succeeds it’s a surprise, like what we’ve seen with Pitt. And that dude looked totally pedestrian to me.

It’s a QB-centric sport and when you lose a good one the season goes to shlt. That’s football these days.

I was impressed by the Pitt QB’s athleticism and very quick release.

Luke looked small and overmatched - not ready.

The staff clearly did not want him throwing in obvious passing situations.

It was not much of a surprise when Collins returned.
In his limited time Luke made more reads than Rickie has all year. Getting to the second guy is critical. Rickie can’t make a read. He locks on guys. So they’ve simplified things more. When he scrambles he either has to run or he makes a bad throw. Maybe he eventually puts it together. But doesn’t seem like he’s doing it this year.

Can’t help but wonder how many people show up for the Halloween night game.
I wasn’t planning to be there cause of Halloween but I think that dome will be a ghost town.

Why recruit him then? It's not like he's going to grow. I really don't think he will fair much better, but use his legs to help take the pressure off the run game? I always question these small school stars that put up huge stats, but don't have the size.

I want the guy to succeed but I saw nothing last night other than some running quickness.

Because that’s all they let him do. He made two throws on the run. The one bad pass he had a snap that was a ground ball and he couldn’t do anything with it. Not sure how you can write him off but think Rickie is getting better.

Why do you think the staff pulled him so quickly? Because he was making good reads? Because he was an effective thrower? Because he was on the verge of getting us back into the game?

It seems to me that the staff saw what I saw with my untrained eyes. He was overmatched. He was not ready.

I am hopeful that he will be ready at some point. But he did not seem ready to me last night. Sorry.

Didn’t he take like 8 snaps? I don’t know how any judgement can be rendered after 8 snaps. I mean McCord threw ,what, 4 picks on a similar number of snaps against Pitt. Did we write him off because of that?

I doubt Carney’s good enough to do anything this season, but it was 8 snaps.
