I think we have no choice but to conclude that cuse's offensive issue is the play book being too complicated. I was both excited and concerned at G McD's statement this summer that he learned a ton studying NFL Atlanta Falcon's offense and couldn't wait to put it into effect in the SU offensive scheme, due to a fear it would be too complicated for the kids to get.
I acknowledge that IQ and football IQ for players aren't the same thing but they certainly are related. I know SU players' IQs are higher than those at Miami. Yet Miami doesn't have players lining up in the wrong spot every other play. Our "smarter" guys aren't grasping it. Our not so smart guys have no clue. We've had problems with play book being too complicated in the past and it looks just like what we are seeing with a stymied offense, at least on the pass. This year is twice as bad as I've ever seen it. WR running wrong routes and lining up wrong on every play. We are unable to play our most athletic WRs at all, because they can't grasp it. What other school has that issue. There are some really unclever players out there that are All-Americans. Estime and Funderburk can't even see the field? The OC is doing this team a huge disservice.
It's a common problem with new OC's. The fix is the same as always. The play book needs to be scrapped and dumbed down right now. The kids aren't going to click in and pick it up mid-year. If we don't, it will look like this week in and week out. If we do, we have a chance.
I'm not complaining about the team's performance to date as to wins and losses. Last week's win was awesome. Thank goodness for our defense, which I think is incredible and fun to watch. Thank goodness our RB's are great and the OL has done well. But it is undeniable this team is being held back by the ugly passing game.
UNC is a bad team. One if the worst in the ACC. I would have said worse than SU before this game. UNC is running an offense that looks like an offense. Players just look like they know what they are supposed to be doing. I think it is that they understand what looks like a pretty simple play book. Lots of screens that are working and short passes other than the middle seems to Ebron, who is killing it. Their WRs are blocking well on those screens. I can't believe our WRs are unable to block due to a total lack of talent. I think they are so screwed up on the play book that they are flustered and unable to do anything right because of it. The book is getting in the way of the talent they do have. I know going from a WR3 to a WR1 is a huge difference, but West looks like he has forgotten or lost all the talent he had last year. It's not lost talent, it's a new OC that has complicated things so much the book is getting I the way of the talent. They are up tempo and it is having a huge effect on Miami. You can't be up tempo when your kids don't know where they are supposed to line up and where they are to run to in their routes.
They'll lose this game to Miami, but Miami is trying to give it to them with the 4 Interceptions. UNC is making missteps with penalties, too. But the offense looks much better than SU because it looks like they grasp the plays and are trying to make a concerted effort to do something. Our passing game does not.
