Portal Overload

Interesting to look at the transfer portal right now.
There is about two and a half weeks before teams start fall camp.
There are a number of players still in the portal including a number from su.
Wonder how many players will be left without a team once the dust settles.
Also if su picks up anyone just before camp.
A lot of kids entered the portal this year. Wonder if there will be less next year if a number of players do not find landing spots.

You would think teams with open scholarships would be all over academic SRs (JRs in terms of eligibility). If the kid isn't good the scholarship opens up next year again. We desperately need a down field threat. We could use some leadership in the secondary. We need a disruptor on the DL. That is three areas we need help now. Would love to see us get help.

Thought the deadline passed for being able to be on a roster and play for this fall?

I certainly hope so! It's not good for college sports for 25% of every team's roster declaring free agency every year. You'll be in a constant state of recruitment, and players will be even harder to coach (more self-centered, seeing college as an audition, without real connection to the school or the team).

Agree it is going to make it a lot harder for coaches if the number of transfer continues.
Unfortunately a number of these kids are all convinced that they are going to the nfl even though it’s only a very small percent and an even small percent are still playing after three years.
There are some that really value the importance of education but it does not seem to be the majority.
I know the argument was to give the player flexibility but how many non athletes really switch schools in undergrad. It seems the players leaving now are for more playing time or expected exposure versus a better education.
The unfortunate thing for the players in the portal that are not picked up is that they gave up a guaranteed scholarship. Even if they get picked up at a d2 or d3 it will not be a full athletic scholarship.

"At this point, it appears that a vast majority of players who entered the 2021 transfer portal will have a serious problem finding the funding to attend a new school, and many run the risk of not playing football at all."

The school they are transferring from can't take away their scholarship until after the academic term they entered the transfer portal. Student-athlete cannot lose their scholarship during a term in-progress. In some cases the school/coaches may take the player back if they don't find a new school.

What happens if you withdraw from the transfer portal?
There may be a conversation that needs to be had about how will college be paid for if another scholarship opportunity doesn’t arise.” If student-athletes withdraw from the portal, the original school can return them to the roster and restore athletics aid if it chooses.

The reason that SU doesnt have a full roster might be that they are forced to hold spots for SU players in the portal that might return

Could be wrong but I thought I read they only had to hold it till the end of the semester they entered the portal. That would have been spring semester.
Not sure I see any of the SU players that entered the portal coming back.

The other thing I found interesting about the article was the assistant coaches statement that if you are a 22 with an offer you should commit.
It seems like more players are waiting longer than usual to commit.

Don't think schools are forced to hold spots but in certain instances might be willing to.

Also wondering if schools can announce incoming transfers prior to them technically having room for them?

If options are there, the coaches potentially deem good enough, I'd presume they're in contact.

From our (the fans perspective) we'd want every spot filled for depth. From the schools perspective they might not want to add 10 kids at 100k+ per year (tuition, room, books, food, stipend) if none or only 1 hit. Million Dollar gamble with potentially no ROI. As fans it's not our money so we'd roll the dice for any gain. For the University footing the bill it's probably a bit more complicated.

There use to be "Blue Shirts" which were prospects that never took ovs or given a written letter of intent. They are considered by the NCAA to be unrecruited. They would walk on and then receive a scholarship after the first day of Fall Camp. But that was done to get around having too many commits in a class.

How will they deal with the extra covid year, going forward? It sounds like less HS recruits, OR players won't be invited back for that year - essentially losing a year for Covid. May cut 5th years, as well.

Seems the extra year shouldn't count towards the 85, if the covid year truly didn't count.

You know, too bad for those kids who bailed on their schools, but this is the best possible result for the future of college sports.

If 75% of the kids who enter the portal fail to get offers from other schools and have to drop sports, or drop down to Division 3, well, that's too bad. You took a gamble, and maybe you weren't "all that" after all. A little humility never killed anybody.

Once athletes begin to understand this, it will likely result in lower roster turnover. It might increase tampering by opposing coaches, because smart kids won't enter the portal unless they have a destination in mind already.

But overall, this should hopefully keep down the "mass exodus" situations in the future.

Can the school pay for NIL. If they do, does it have to be equal b/t men and women sports

Agree. Kids will continue to leave even though a number of players who entered the portal have not found a new school. Believe grass is always greener on the other side.

Unfortunately it won’t. Kids will continue to enter the portal thinking their road to the nfl is at the next school.
