Post game thoughts...

Custis made a significant amount of mental mistakes, one time getting Dungey hit pretty good bc of it... But, he's a physical specimen.
He needs to stop making those mistakes as the season progresses. Like when he didn't turn his head the right way on the pass route in the beginning of the second half. If him and TD were on the same page, that play should have been six.

It wasn't flawless. Ed missed a lot of throws from the end of the first quarter throughout the second quarter. But it was the first game and he's certainly been better. Not worth worrying about, that's for sure.

I wouldn't worry either but this could also be on the receivers not hitting their spots. Perhaps that is why Dino felt his performance was flawless. I got the impression that Custis doesn't run precise routes.

i would like to see more of culpepper. he was very mechanical for sure, but that is understandable as he was only doing the script, and doing what was expected. he needs more in game snaps to assess what his ceiling is. i suspect he would become more comfortable given the experience . tough to assess his presence in such a short period. i could not assess his leadership nor his comfort in in deviating from the scripted play in such a short time. i suspect he may be much better than what we saw.

i think Culppers issues is he release not his arm. hasnt really been fixed in 2 yrs here, timing can help some of that as Peyton Manning proved every week

I don't know if Riley was poor at PR or not...he never had a chance. When the ball got to him he was already facing 2, 3 or 4 guys in his face every time.

people mus think every Punt can be returned.. when punts are high and short you have very little chance.. making one guy miss isnt his issue, he did that several times.

True the blocking was not executed as well as it should be but you have to make people miss a returner or break a tackle, I don't see that from Riley...very good straight away speed but not elusive.

Someone I'd like to see return punts is Melifonwu. He's probably being reshirted but next year I'd love to see him get some reps taking punts.

Babers said in his press conference that the scheme CCSU was running was to prevent the running game from taking off. 8 guys in the box.

But I bet he's concerned a bit. Even against 8, we should look better.

The run blocking has no sophistication to it. Not to live in the past, but P&D used to teach O line blocking very well, and we had nobodies turn into 1,000 yard rushers year after year. Where are the counters, the trap blocks?

Sure you can just try to push people back, but that doesn't open holes, angles do.

Guy hit his first 13 passes in a row and we were up 21-0 in the first quarter and you're busting on him?
Even after that, he went 15 for 22, which is about 67%. That would be our single season completion record, when he was doing "poorly".

It's difficult to do sophisticated run blocking schemes when your offense is filled with up-tempo RPO's. I'd rather not have a guard randomly decide to pull when ED reads the defense for a pass play.

Something as simple as cross-blocking at the point of attack would be enough. It can still be a run/pass option, but you can have a hole picked out, not just have the back read where an opening may be.

Definitely agree with that.

they are almost all pass plays

I don't know. Seems like I'm this offense, a lot of the blocking looks the same pass or run. Baylor used to run block on pass plays all the time.

The second part of your post rings true - there are a lot of run plays where the OL just pushes fwd, the RB runs up the back of the guard or center - LB loops around and makes the tackle after a 2 or 3 yard gain.

Something has to give.

I am hoping some of that is because they were running a very basic vanilla offense in this game.

My overall thoughts on the game..

Our running game almost looks bad by design. There is nothing to it at all. We just spread it out and hand it to someone running straight ahead and hope there's a lane, if not, get a yard and hurry up.

Also, Moe Neal at the goal line... uh, what?

This is my take. It is poirly designed
