Potential 2021 Roster

If we win 4 games that's 6 losing seasons in our last 7, half of them after our one winning season. That would make it hard to sell the program to recruits- and to fans. We've got to get up in the air before we run out of runway.

Again, I don't disagree. But after Gerg level awfulness last year, we must at least be competitive. To me, I hope for six or more, I think the talent is there, but if it's four wins (and they're all OOC, and we win zero in the ACC), then it's time for a change.

Since this roster thread is (ooops, was) pinned, might as well tack on the updated (and also extremely handy) version GO posted a few days ago, with a shout-out to OX:
_________
Leveraging OX's fine work in Ensleyology here is my cut at a depth chart. Much more guessing and reliance on the ND depth chart than what would have done in the past. Some position assignments are based on getting the most talent/experience on the field.

I think four guys are locked in the 1st unit, Servais, Davis, Bergeron, and Bleich. Where the configuration changes is between the RT and Center. Many position assignments are guesses. Just looking at measurables of height, weight, and games played this unit should be a strength and is finally "ACC" level there. I'll repeat, this will be the biggest and most experienced OL since at least 2012.

First premise is that Taj moves to the slot. I think the incoming recruits have a significant opportunity to get in the rotation. Coming out of August this could be radically different. Need consistent production out of this group.

This has to be the one group that keeps Dino up at night. I believe there is still uncertainty on the status of Okechukwu and Roscoe. If these guys can't play stouter it will really limit the team. Designed for a team where the offense is putting the opponent in keep up/catch up mode and you are playing with favorable down, distance, score situations. There are big bodies to spare on the OL, can one of them play NT?

Biggest worry bead after the DL in my opinion. At lot of guesses using the ND depth chart as a starting point. By far the youngest unit on the team. This is just my guess this could end up as radically different in August. The guys entering early have radically changed the outlook of this unit and the defense as a whole.

It there is room on the roster adding a DT and a DB would be great.

This system is perfect for hybrid players like him. This is all speculation on my part but other guys seemed better than him. He was getting passed up by younger guys. This doesn't mean he can't go on to be successful somewhere else. Good Luck Tyrell

What if we get them in the transfer portal after this year?

Why haven't we done it THIS year, with at least 5 open roster spots?
That way, they could have a year getting used to the system we run.

Maybe because there aren't any game ready DT's left in the portal who want to play here?

From what we have read, 75% of the kids who entered the portal don't have a landing place, and football pre-season camps open in a week or so.

Surely, playing for Syracuse in the ACC is better than having no scholarship and having to drop down to JUCO or Division 3, and only getting needs-based financial aid.

Maybe because there aren't any game ready DT's left in the portal who want to play here?
People assume transfers are automatically better than what we have. You can bring in transfers and still be bad but now have two scholarships taking up space. There are reasons why 4 stars are not getting picked up. Some of our fans see it as a lost opportunity to get better.

Possibility of getting quality transfers for next year. That’s when we really need them. A decent 2021 season will make us a better destination for some of the better transfer players.

Why not just ask for a unicorn?

We were the worst P5 football team last year out of 125 or so teams.

On average, teams had something like 10-15 kids enter the portal. That's a pool of 1200 to 1800 kids or so.

Now, divide that by 24 for the number of positions, including punter & placekicker, and you have between 50 and 80 guys for each position.

You're telling me that we can't find one or two guys who have game experience to fill the defensive line for just about the worst team in America?

From what we have read, 75% of the kids who entered the portal don't have a landing place, and football pre-season camps open in a week or so.

Surely, playing for Syracuse in the ACC is better than having no scholarship and having to drop down to JUCO or Division 3, and only getting needs-based financial aid.
Unintended consequences

You realize how rare it is to find a 6'4" 300 pound guy with explosion, balance, and strength, right?

1 - Syracuse was not the "worst P5 football team last year." Our record was terrible, but we were a better team than our record.

2 - Please tell me who you want. There are a couple of interesting guys on this list.

Now tell me, from the list of players you've identified...
  • How many of these guys are running from a problem and bringing their bags with them.
  • How many of these guys are in good academic shape?
  • How many of them want to come in and compete with Jonathan, Black, Williams and Roscoe? If they didn't want to compete where they were, what makes you think they want to come to Cuse and compete with these guys?

*Remember, anyone still in the portal hasn't been wanted by any other school in the country either. I don't know what it is, but I'm sure there's a reason.

Let's not assume the coaches haven't gone through the list of players in the portal thoroughly.

Yup. We have 6 upper classesmen rotating on the D line. 4 seniors. Two juniors. Along with the freshman and sophomores you want to rotate in and prepare for the following seasons. Hard to find ready now DT’s that fit your scheme, that can learn it and understand it fast. Its not worth taking away from players you want to develop. If the staff thought they could have got someone that could make a difference they would have got him but most of those guys chose more favorable P5 teams. Since there is no site to follow transfer recruiting. People can’t monitor what the staff is doing so they make assumptions.

Who was worse than us last year?
As all great coaches say, "You are what your records says you are."
We were 1-10. Who was worse last season?

I'll answer the other question, "who would you want", in a separate post, since I have to go through the list in the portal for DTs.

What your provided was our portal list at the link. Among our guys who entered, who would I want back?

Jason Munoz, DT from St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale was a real loss. He rated a high 3 star at around .86.

As I look at the sortable list, I see many guys who are immediately eligible and uncommitted.

These are the type of guys I would hope the staff has reached out to:
  • Tre'von Riggins - 4 years of eligiblity, Indiana (one of 2 DLs leaving), originally gave a verbal to Miami. Lakewood High, St. Pete, 4 years of eligibility, .86 rating, 6-2, 246
  • Riggins' teammate, Anthony Shipton, is a .85 with 2 years of eligibility. They tend to have pretty good linemen in the Big 10.
  • Chase Davis, 6-5, 265, from Whittier, CA, attended Nevada, 3 years of eligibility.
  • Jeffrey Johnson, from Mississippi. Attended Tulane, 6-3, 312, rated .875 coming out of HS.
  • Chris Daniels, Missouri, 6-3.5, 315, .855 in HS from TX.
I mean, that's just a sampling. Yes, I would expect that they have combed through the list. Perhaps there isn't any interest out there at all.

But I would have hoped for them to shore up the depth. After all, wasn't our offensive line wiped out by injuries just last year?

Have they learned nothing, leaving open spots on the roster when our defensive line and defensive backfield are so short staffed this season? This IS fixable.

Why do you think Munoz was a loss? Is it because of his Hs ranking and that he was committed to Miami at one point? High school rankings and offers mean nothing once they get on campus. Can’t use that to evaluate how good of a transfer they’ll be.

That's a good list. Thanks for taking the time to put that together. There are a few more that look good too, but I have to assume if we were interested, the interest wasn't mutual.

Again...
  • What kind of baggage do they have?
  • Why has no other school picked them up?
  • Do they fit the scheme?

Ideally I wish all scholarships were accounted for, but when a player doesn't make it or leaves the program late in the cycle (Tyler, Davis, Moss) I'm ok if the coaches decide to leave the scholarship open rather than give a scholarship to a kid they don't really believe just to fill the scholarships.

Let's see if any of the remaining scholarships (assuming there really are open scholarships) go to any of the walk-ons who are contributing.

they could hardly practice and couldn’t hit. The live action they saw was in games
