Preseason Camp Thread

The WRs. Jones is the wildcard right now. Hard group to call.

Does Jones bump Jackson? I'm guessing Hatcher is in this top group and I think bumps Brown/Queeley. I also think Alford is on the outside looking in.

My top 6 are Jones, Gadsen, Jackson, Hatcher, Cooper and Adams. (just guessing.)

OWRJacksonAlford or Jones*
OWRGadsdenBrown or Queeley
IWRCooperAdams or Hayes

DL - I have to go with Linton to start until someone else runs out there. Jaquez, Simmons, Geer, in the second group. Fuentes in the rotation to.

OL - unless Veterello is a new player at Center this is a hard one to swallow. He's just not that good in there and it blows up the whole offense if the center gets pushed backwards. Goes without saying he needs to consistantly snap the ball to. Servais killed a lot of plays with bad snaps. My fingers are crossed Bleich is the guy and that Vet is bumped to RT.

I still like Alford but admittedly he hasn’t done enough to separate himself as just a guy on the field. Other than say the big play against VT. Overall the WR corp has always been the most head scratching group for years. Feels like when the real games start, players that seem to be ready for a break out year based on practices end up largely disappearing.

Yup. None of these guys have separated themselves. The coaches don’t even know who will emerge. We as fans are just guessing based on small clips of 1v1’s and reports from writers who have seen about 8% of practice footage.

Then I guess we just go with the ones that like to block and are the best at it, if all other things are equal

I hope it's been coaching, and we see an improvement

Alford just seems to raw to me. NFL body but inconsistent and poor route running. Still learning how to play the position. I actually view Alford to be more like Custis than anyone.

The WR group, imo, has not necessarily been head scratching just super super young. Queeley and Jackson are the veterans (not counting Cooper who's now been playing longer Thump Belton and Barry Bake combined) but Queeley is a redshirt junior and Jackson a redshirt sophomore. They've been in the program the longest.

3 of the 4 oldest guys are all transfers and have only been in the program 1 year or less. Cooper just starting his second season I think.

I think the LBs set up like this: I'm curious to hear how the Florida kid's camp has been.

There has seemingly been a fair amount of praise for Roon during camp. It will be fun to watch our LBing room this season.

I just like Alford, can’t explain why really. Despite his inconsistencies he seems like the guy that if the light bulb goes off, he has the potential to be really good. He has a lot of natural gifts that haven’t been maximized completely IMO. Not a blame game, I’m optimistic he turns in to a star. I have far more optimism in general for this group as a whole, this year and moving forward with the new coaching staff. Recruiting figures in to that as well.

This always feels like a which came first the chicken or the egg.
Oline can’t pass block.
Don’t have a QB that can throw
Don’t have wide receivers who make plays

Which came first? IDK. But I have faith in the new coaches.

WRs who can make plays make the biggest impact IMHO. It's pretty demoralizing to have plays where oline holds up, QB puts a pass in the right area and WR doesn't make the play. I say this as a former WR. Every ball that gets to you you have to make yours. We've had some stud WRs make some very inept offenses put up some points in the past.

Flip side, it's mentally draining to work solid releases and run crisp routes repeatedly and not have a catchable ball come your way. Think we've seen that transpire in recent years and some WRs lose their heads and/or get the yips in the past as result. WR position is a grind when not knowing if or when a catchable ball will finally make it your way and the more rare that is the more pressure on that opportunity.

I understand lack of time to throw and WRs not getting open or making plays to help the QB, but Shrader's inability to make even simple throws seems independent of those issues.
Hopefully that has improved, but muscle memory is hard to overcome.

Umari has a serious vertical. We have some seriously athletically gifted WRs, on the coaches to make it happen now.
Coaches and the players. Still shots of impressive athleticism don't tell the whole story. There are stud athletes that don't pan out and then there are the Hunter Renfros that somehow become stars. Hopefully, our athletic guys have developed the skills to take advantage of that athleticism. I'm excited to see if anyone emerges.

We saw all of it last year: turf burners, guys not get open, open guys drop balls that hit them in the hands/chest.
