Forde-Yard Dash: How Florida Became the SEC Epicenter of Dysfunction

The situation in Gainesville is nothing new. Is there a successor that can turn around years of coaching disarray?
by Pat Ford SI

Thought you may want to wonder who they are talking about as the next coach at Florida. Oh, and if Mullen can't recruit - WHY IN THE HELL WOULD WE WANT HIM?! Somebody was doing the recruiting when he was at Miss St. and at Fla. All the asst. coaches probably.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
None of the last three Florida head coaches—Will Muschamp, McElwain and Mullen—made it to 50 games on the job. That’s something no other SEC school currently can say. Surprisingly, Gainesville has become the conference capital of turnover, turbulence and dysfunction.

WHO IS NEXT AT FLORIDA?

Despite that status, this should be a Cadillac job when up and running properly. And there are reasons to expect that status to return, with Florida set to open an opulent new facility that should enhance the much-discussed recruiting shortfalls. A quick look at the potential candidates, and the problems that exist with each of them:

Billy Napier (4), Louisiana. There is building buzz around the 42-year-old coach of the Ragin’ Cajuns—and given the number of high-level openings, the premise that it’s too big a leap from the Sun Belt to the Power 5 is losing validity. Somebody has to take these jobs, right? Why not a guy with a 38–12 record, three straight 10-win seasons and SEC experience as an assistant to Nick Saban from 2013-16? Napier helped Alabama land some of its biggest stars of the last decade, and is thought of highly enough in the Saban camp that they might not love the idea of having him in the same conference. The drawback: Aside from the jump in class from the Sun Belt, Napier does come with close ties to McElwain.

Lane Kiffin (5), Mississippi. There is a faction of Florida boosters eager to ride the Lane Train. He’s taken the Rebels to a 9–2 record in his second season, with a fan-friendly offense and a willingness to go after the big dogs in the league. Kiffin also is every bit the recruiter Mullen is not, putting a premium on chasing the best talent he can get. The drawback: Kiffin and athletic director Scott Stricklin are an oil-and-water mix, and if Stricklin is not beholden to booster pressure this would seem to be a tough sell. Florida’s last two head coaches have been high-maintenance guys with a propensity to say something cringe-worthy—does the school really want a third straight like that?

Matthew OHaren/USA TODAY Sports

James Franklin (6), Penn State. He’s won at a much tougher place in the SEC than Florida, and then followed that up with a successful tenure at Penn State (although this year has been a bit of a letdown). Florida also has never had a Black full-time head football coach. The drawback: Would he leave, and would Florida be his first option if he does? Franklin’s clock might be ticking at Penn State, but he’s dropped hints that a new commitment to the school may be forthcoming. All eyes are on a meeting of the Penn State compensation committee scheduled for Tuesday.

Dave Clawson (7), Wake Forest. Much like Franklin’s success at Vanderbilt, what Clawson has done at a place like Wake should make winning at Florida look easy. He also is on the cutting edge of offensive football, which plays well at a school that once won national titles with the innovating attacks of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer. His personality, demeanor and outlook would mesh well with Stricklin’s. The drawback: Is Clawson the guy to beat Kirby Smart and Nick Saban for top recruits? That’s never been his game.

Bob Stoops (8), TV analyst. Before he became a national championship coach at Oklahoma, Stoops was the very popular defensive coordinator for Spurrier during some of the Florida glory days. Stoops enjoyed his time at the school and could rocket to the top of this list if he has interest in getting back into coaching. The drawback: Does he have interest in getting back into coaching? Stoops has had plenty of opportunities in the past few years and thus far rebuffed them all.

Luke Fickell (9), Cincinnati. If anyone has established himself as the next great college football coach, it’s Fickell. He’s 42–6 the last four seasons and is one win away from a second straight undefeated regular season. The drawback: Fickell is Midwest-centric and might not harbor a desire to coach in the SEC. And if he does want to leave what has been his lifetime geographic footprint, USC might be the destination. There also is a belief that he will not even entertain conversations about other jobs while the Bearcats are in the College Football Playoff hunt, and after Saturday they are more in it than ever. That could set back recruiting and program transition into January at least. (Still: if he’s a 10-year home run hire, he’s worth waiting for and sacrificing one early signing period.)

Dan Lanning (10), Georgia defensive coordinator. If you can hit your nemesis where it hurts and hire an unproven rising star, do you do it? While Smart is a defense-first head coach, there is no doubt that the 35-year-old Lanning has put his own stamp on the Bulldogs’ historically great defense. That unit remains on pace to have the highest differential between points allowed and the national scoring average in FBS history—currently Georgia is allowing 7.5 points per game and the national scoring average is 28.7, a difference of 21.2. (Alabama 2011 has the current mark at 20.1.) And that scoring defense would be even lower this week if it weren’t for a pick-six touchdown by Charleston Southern to avoid a shutout. The drawback: Lanning obviously has not been a head coach and is even relatively new to coordinator status. This would be a gamble by the Gators.
Dan Mullen- 103-61 (62.8)

Took Mississippi state to the #1 ranking in the country at one point.

Mississippi state career record = 589-566-36 (49.4% winning pct)

Mullen went 69-46 (60%)

Only 2 losing seasons at Mississippi st, one of which was his first year there.

Since, joe Moorhead and Mike Leach have gone 8-5, 6-7, 4-7, and this year 7-4 with a game against ole miss and a bowl game left.

From 2001-2008 when Mullen took over, they won 3, 3, 2, 3, 3, 3, 8, and 4 games.

Mullen was a dogchit recruiter at Florida relative to what that program is capable of. Our biggest issue is the talent on the roster and he doesn’t solve that.
LMAO, and Dino is recruiting 2-3 star "undervalued" guys...I'd take a Dak Prescott 3 star QB that Mullen can develop over Garrett Schrader who seems to be most efficient on YOLO 56 Yard GO routes over a 5 yard slant in zone coverage loll. Mullen Screams VIRGINIA TECH

Huh? Florida had top 10 finishes under Mullen.
lol PhatOrange he only lead Mississippi St to a #1 Ranking in Week 10 of a season with Dak Prescott who was an "athlete cruit". He's now like, I think, he signed like a 290 M contract to be QB for the Dallas Texans, Fort Worth Cowboys...Maybe the mf-ing Dallas Cowboys...I come on here 2 times a week to yak sports, and the level of delusion is less problematic than the overall level of pessimism from Syracuse Orange Locals...Also SU bball will be alright...Cole Swider needs to hunt his shot...We will be there in March and April...IF ADJW could get a Mullen to come to Cuse, or next year with Chip Kelly getting fired at UCLA for them going 6-7, maybe we need to take that risk. I'm sick of people saying we need Saint Doug who led us to 8-5 seasons and left for the Bills, which at the time was a worse time situation...Doug Marrone sucks. His wife and daughter didn't even live in Cuse when he was HC.

9th in recruiting is bad when you’re recruiting players against all the SEC, some of the B10, then throw in ND and some other outliers for fun. What world do you live in where 9th is bad. Take a break tonight, you’ve had some H0T Takes today.

Highest class was 9th. If that’s the best you can pull with Florida’s resources, location, conference, recent history, etc. you’re probably not a star recruiter. Listen and read some national guys who have been saying that all season.

Not that it matters though because he isn’t coming here haha
He isn’t a recruiter. He is an offensive guru. The guy just lost his QB, and his top 3 pass catchers. Last year he beat Georgia. Lost by 3 at a&m, by 3 to LSU, and by 4 to Alabama. (I’m not going to count the bowl game because of players sitting out).

You are allowed to have a bad year. Especially when replacing all that talent that he lost to the draft.

I agree. Can 100% coach. And it’s funny that these days at schools like that you aren’t allowed to have a bad year. Especially when he has a young QB in AR that people were high on and as mentioned above he has QB history with Dak.

I just think it doesn’t matter all that much who we bring in if the talent level doesn’t considerably increase. I think we should just start cheating more. Can’t hurt to try

Rivals had him at 17, 7, 8, and 11.

lol...If ADJW did coax him here the whining on here for having only having a top 30 recruiting class would be great...I'm going to bed.

Mullen isn’t coming to Syracuse guys. His recruiting aside it won’t matter unless you tell me he’s a massive turning stone fan or his wife is from Dewitt

If SU is willing to spend the money, it never hurts to ask. But then again that presupposes they are serious about buying out Dino, that in and of itself would make me happy.

but but, he was an assistant here in 1998, that has to matter!

the idea that Mullen would be interested in coming here is as laughable as the idea that Syracuse is going to pay the kind of money that Mullen can get at like 10 better programs

The discussion of Mullen coming here reminds me a lot of the thoughts and dreams I have after buying a Powerball ticket. It's really nice to think of the things that could happen and help me escape reality for a little bit.

He’s being ridiculed for not recruiting hard enough at Florida, despite some top ten classes, but currently at only 23. Other (Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M) SEC teams are beating him with top five classes. Can you imagine if SU had these kind of recruiting expectations. They say Mullen hates recruiting and wants an NFL job. He sounds a little like Marrone.

We'd be insane to have those recruiting expectations. The expectations don't magically make you have a better class. They can just hit "auto-recruit" and end up in the top 25. We do that and we're 65.

My point is he thinks he is too good for a crap job like us. It isn’t happening

Why do you keep saying this is a crap job. What the hell is wrong with you?

Syracuse has an indoor stadium. Syracuse draws the nation's biggest crowds for hoops, and is dying to support a winning football team again.

We play in the ACC, we don't play in a crap league. You win this league and you can play for a championship.

Would you rather be Rutgers or UConn?? Seriously, I'm so tired of people seeing this as a bad job. This school has been a national power for 2 stretches that each lasted more than a decade while I have been a fan.

Get over this loser crap. People like you hold the program back.

I'd be surprised if one of the factories hires him now as HC after just being fired.

I think it’s important to have this job properly rated. You’re right that it’s not a crap job. There are a lot of HC and coordinators at G5 schools who would love a chance to coach here. And it’s got the added bonus of having less pressure from insane boosters. A HC could go .500 with bowl games making 3-5m a year for a long time.

In the same breath, we lack proven local recruiting and recruiting nationally is hard if you don’t have some winning seasons. We don’t invest quite like the top of our league, though this has gotten better.

P5? We’re in a rough spot relative to those teams given our recent history and recruiting challenges.

We should have a coaching staff that can fill the entire roster, and retain players in the program.

These guys seem to have failed at that, spectacularly.

My point. If you offer him the right money. He may be interested because of the lack of pressure. He seemed beat up and over his last couple press confrences. You can only take so much sometimes. Syracuse may give him that low pressure situation if we offer the right money. Might bring joy back to coaching. Yes, I don’t think it will happen. But I can hope like hell
