Class of 2024 QB Brendan Zurbrugg (OH) Flipped to Oklahoma

I think the comparisons to Dungey are pretty accurate. Really like his mobility in the pocket and just overall presence and ability to keep his head up on the move and make good decisions both running and deciding where to throw the ball to. All very similar to Dungey. Obviously he has really good accuracy numbers and 800 plus yds rushing is very nice. His O-line wasn't great and his receivers seemed just ok so the accuracy numbers he put up seem to be mainly because of him. He has good height and a decent build with a similar stature to Dungey and would probably add muscle and strength as he did. He has pretty good touch on his throws but does lack some arm strength. But it should be adequate. All in all I'd be really happy with this pick-up. Seems like he has a lot of potential with a low down-side. From his comments, I'd guess he commits next week on his visit.

Congrats Brendan. Welcome to Syracuse.

He was offered by Northwestern today. They had been slow playing him and must have realized they were about to lose any chance at him. Indeed.

Watching his film, Brendan is one of those QBs who doesn’t have a great OL or WRs. He is out there running for his life all the time. Throws well on the run. Can extend plays with his feet really well and has that rare ability to find the open guy while in full flight.

The highlight film for most QBs features perfect blocking play after play, with the play developing as designed, the WR breaking up as expected, etc. That is great for someone like Clemson used to be, but for a program like Syracuse, we need a QB who can save broken plays to be successful.

I think Zurbrugg is a good fit. You can see his dad was a QB. Lots of poise and patience. He needs to get stronger and the jury is out of his ability to make reads and audible into the right play. But his ability to make something out of nothing is impressive.

Hopefully its three seasons until he needs to step on the field

Thanks for the scouting report, Tomcat -- great info.

Better than that he was offered by Northwestern on Friday when his OV to SU started.

Lots of good points, Tom. I think you are spot on when you talked about his ability to extend plays and throw accurately on the run. He plays like a kid whose father was a QB at a big time program.

The thing I like the best about BZ is the completion percentage number. Accuracy is elusive and difficult to coach. Based only on the linked highlights, I have questions about arm strength. That could come with time and training.

Let’s be honest - it’s very hard to keep a consistent, quality two deep of OL in the program. Whether it’s recruiting misses, kids that don’t develop, injury DQ’s, etc, over the past 20 years I can count on one hand the number of years where we’ve had a quality 2 deep the entire year. Most of the time we end up having to play kids that aren’t ready or aren’t effective out of necessity.

Having a mobile QB that can create is critical because it helps to reduce the pressure on having the OL solid all season long. If we’re able to do it - then awesome and it’s a huge upside. But having QB’s like this gives us a fighting chance of a successful season even when the OL isn’t completely there.
