Class of 2024 QB Brendan Zurbrugg (OH) Flipped to Oklahoma

Let’s be honest - it’s very hard to keep a consistent, quality two deep of OL in the program. Whether it’s recruiting misses, kids that don’t develop, injury DQ’s, etc, over the past 20 years I can count on one hand the number of years where we’ve had a quality 2 deep the entire year. Most of the time we end up having to play kids that aren’t ready or aren’t effective out of necessity.

Having a mobile QB that can create is critical because it helps to reduce the pressure on having the OL solid all season long. If we’re able to do it - then awesome and it’s a huge upside. But having QB’s like this gives us a fighting chance of a successful season even when the OL isn’t completely there.
Exactly, very few programs have a high quality 2 deep at oline

I keep reading this kid's name, and I see this:

I feel the same way I did the first time I saw J. Lamson as I say about this kid.. This kid can ball... He will be rocking the Dome with his mobility and accurate throws. Can't wait to watch him mature.

Accuracy is great point. 76% completion percentage is flipping amazing. You can't fake your way into a percentage like that.

There is something on his film that made it frustrating to watch. Who can guess what Im thinking?

Congrats Brendan. Welcome to Syracuse.

He was offered by Northwestern today. They had been slow playing him and must have realized they were about to lose any chance at him. Indeed.

Watching his film, Brendan is one of those QBs who doesn’t have a great OL or WRs. He is out there running for his life all the time. Throws well on the run. Can extend plays with his feet really well and has that rare ability to find the open guy while in full flight.

The highlight film for most QBs features perfect blocking play after play, with the play developing as designed, the WR breaking up as expected, etc. That is great for someone like Clemson used to be, but for a program like Syracuse, we need a QB who can save broken plays to be successful.

I think Zurbrugg is a good fit. You can see his dad was a QB. Lots of poise and patience. He needs to get stronger and the jury is out of his ability to make reads and audible into the right play. But his ability to make something out of nothing is impressive.
Exactly. He often made the scramble drill plays look easy peasy. And every throw was directly on the money in stride etc. you didn’t see receivers needing to make major adjustments for balls or go up and get a jump ball. Those things along with good vision and anticipation lead to his impressive accuracy numbers. 76% is ridiculous and he threw for 14 yds per completion to boot. Kid looks legit in all the most important areas. He Just seems to play with great awareness, control and confidence on the field. And he backs all that up with impressive athleticism, height and a frame that should be able to put on some more muscle. Kid has offers from Dartmouth, Yale and Colgate so you know he’s smart.

My only critique of him is his arm strength which looks mediocre at least in regards to him throwing the long ball. I typically take note of how far I see a pass travel in the air. I didn’t see him throw one in the air more than 40 yards which is certainly on the low end for QB’s we recruit. That being said all of his throws had decent pace on them. And of all of the QB qualities to lack I think not having a rifle arm is the least concerning.

I was a little disappointed we were unable to land any big fishes at the QB position thus far this cycle as I feel like we have a lot to offer a QB in this class depth wise considering we have a senior leaving and not too many threatening young arms. This kid is certainly flying under the radar and I definitely love this pick up. Getting a QB who appears to have similar athleticism and pocket awareness to Dungey and Shrader but also appears to be even more accurate is pretty awesome. Happy to have him aboard. Welcome Brendan!

I honestly have no idea. I found it much better to watch than most. Wish the sound was all through out instead of just in the last third. Typically that is the case when they mess with the video speed but that wasn’t the reason here.

It’ll be interesting to see where the services rate him. He doesn’t have big offers so I bet not too high. If they were to judge just on film and with what they see with their eyes it should be fairly good in my opinion. But it seems most analysts put a lot of stock in offers when rating kids.

He reminds me ofa young b bees

Gotta be the "circling" of the QB every play. Anyone who would watch that would have a pretty good idea where the QB lines up with out the graphical help, lol.
Exactly. That drove me nuts.

Takes longer to watch the film when you pause and circle the QB each time. I think we can all find the QB fairly easy. Lol

Oh no! An extra 30 seconds. Wherever will you find time to do the items on your to do list?
Ive been editing highlight films for over 20 years. Its just one of those things I notice and try to help kids with when they do their films. You want to cut dead time. Plus this is a discussion board. You dont have to reply if you can't relate.

There’s more to it than that. They look at level of competition which is a big factor in determining stars as well as how the player performed at different camps through the year. Assuming he (or any particular player) is a consistent presence at camps.

I’m sure there is a formula they use to rate. However it is very suspect when a player ranking is reevaluated based on the school he commits too.

Yes I realize all of the factors involved. I'm just saying if an analyst were to base his ranking on just their own evaluation and not what others have evaluated "offers" then I think he should get a pretty good ranking. But seeing that he doesn't have many offers I don't expect it to be too high. I feel analysts rankings rely heavily on offers to give them assurance.

Anyway, apparently Zurbrugg camped last year at Duke, NC State and Pitt and that was when Beck was still with NC State so Beck has been aware of him for a while now. Edit: Woops. Wrong Beck. Tim Beck was at NC State.
