QB Justin Lamson transferring to Stanford

I sure hope the coaches are looking to the portal for a QB who could come in and have the ability to run their offense. With the frequency of injuries, that seems necessary!

I've decided that I don't care.

Don't care at all.

Tell me who's on the roster the night before the first game.

Following HS recruiting, offseason practices, the portal, and all of that is a recipe for needless anxiety and depression.
It's why I'm not quite as upset about the basketball roster right now.

There might be 2 more kids that leave before May 11, the deadline there. Who knows?

All I know is, the coach and program will be judged by what happens from November through March/April. Not May through October.

All of that, these days, is too much to digest and worry about.

(Not to say I won't digest and/or worry about it - but I am going to try my best not to.)

How do you know this? When was Lamson ever forced to make decisions in this offense? We've seen him go against back ups and mid enrollee CB's. Its been mostly short game, 1 read plays.
This is fair. I’m each spring game he did go against the second defense rather than the first for the most part. My observation comes from his conservative willingness to check down whereas CDRW has greater willingness to force a throw.

Overall, I don’t think Lamson will develop into a good P5 starter. Serviceable, sure. But he is not the guy SU should have been hitching their wagon to for the future anyways. I think Fresno St or SDSU would be good landing spots for him.

I see that as well. Good point

Bingo, Crawling out on the ledge every portal loss is useless. It’s 2023. If I’m not the starter i’m gone .

Not speculating about next season. So we are talking just this season. And why do you think I am completely giving up on him?

Based on what we have seen from last year and the Spring game, how can anyone be high on him? It is clear as day that he lacks accuracy. There is still plenty of time for him to develop for when he takes over next season. And I hope that he does otherwise we will be in big trouble. But I don't think a leap will come between now and this fall. Which worries the hell out of me as he is the only option should Shrader go down.

I expect him to play a lot vs Colgate. He should get some time vs Western Michigan and Army. He might get some time vs FSU. By then he needs to be ready in case we need him in the last 5 games. At this point I am worried, but what he does in playing time this year can certainly change that.

Not sure how to reply to all this but in a nutshell. The kid came in last year without even getting spring practice. He then gets “thrown” into a game against a decent ND team and a decent Pitt D. money3189 already listed all the issues that game that weren’t just on CDRW. So I’m not going to repeat it all again.

He played well against ND and didn’t play well against Pitt. It’s not like he looked lost in both games. So there is something there in the very least based on his performance the first game that he played. Not taking any of the contextual factors into account and making it seem like he was terrible I think is very premature.

Do I know if he’ll be good, no. And I’m not saying he will. But I don’t know that he won’t. The main thing he needs to work on IMO is not playing like Jay cutler. CDRW threw some passes very few college QB’s can throw and I’ll absolutely stand by that statement. He made a throw down the left side of the field, off balance, under pressure, 30 yards (that’s how it felt watching) to OG (maybe) with a defender draped all over him. It was almost like he flicked his wrist and threw an absolute bullet to the only spot the ball could go. One of the best single throws I’ve seen in a long time. He also made throws to multiple parts of the field and to different players. Something we don’t always see. So he has a ton of talent and potential. We have had many backups since I’ve been watching that can’t even throw the ball. He has a ton of tools and talent.

So the idea of writing this kid off so early is mind boggling to me. It’s not his 3rd year in the system with multiple games and he never improves.

People saying he isn’t very good tells me all I need to know about their evaluation ability.

I’m sure the coaches told CDRW when he came into the game, “Don’t go crazy running around. We need to keep you in the game.”

So that had to affect his thinking. I have no problem being patient with him, as long as we can keep Shrader healthy. I also leave open the possibility that Lamson could return.

I’m not sure where the whole running thing comes from with CDRW. He’s not a running QB. He can run but it’s not instinctual for him like it was for ED and GS. You can see that in his games last year.

I don't follow football recruiting/portal as much as bball at all. But isn't Lamson the kid that was sort of a "we hope he's a diamond in the rough" and got hurt? I know there were some rumblings that he showed promise and all, but our top two QBs are both 4* guys that were recruited to the SEC?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not satisfied with our overall level of talent on the football team, but this seems like one spot where we should be ok for the near term and have enough runway to fix in the long term.

It's easy to map Lamson as some savior when he hasn't ever played a down that matters.

Do they still have McPhail(spelling?) or do they need to find a 3rd string in the portal? Or do they use that scholarship on a different position? Kinda wish we got too see Lamson in some games, but good luck to him

At this point the call has to be that Lamson was not promised the 2nd spot and he didnt want to have to fight it out in the fall and next year. We need to go hard after a portal kid this year but more importantly after this coming season.

he is still on the roster, walk-on, maybe they give him a scholarship now, I don't know, but either way they absolutely need to bring in at least one QB from the portal.

Again you are arguing against a made up premise. Yes, he has potential but he isn't good right now. IMO chances are he isn't going to reach that potential this season. That doesn't mean that he will never reach that potential. So how in the F is that righting the kid off? And at what point are you going to allow me to have an opinion? Because by your post I am not allowed to have one yet. Then you make it personal with your last point. Par for the course.

It is never easy to sell Syracuse Football, but we have some good things to sell with QBs: potential to be the number 2 guy going into the season, a heartbeat away as they say. 2024 is wide open as far as starting. We also have Jason Beck. Not Kirk Martin, not Sterlin Gilbert. sell it and get another former 4 star on the roster, dammit!

It’s definitely a workers market out there right now. I know nonunion construction workers can make as much as union if you’re worth a damn lol. So if I was McPhail I would tell Dino, give me a scholarship or I walk(only more politely lol). Loyalty should count for something imo

Always had a funny feeling we would never see him suit up in Orange.
The football portal has the same timeline as basketball? That’s dumb.

I hate the portal
The portal as currently constructed is trash. The NCAA needs to take back control of NIL and the portal. If players don’t like it, they’re free to enter the drafts or go play overseas. College sports, which have great brand loyalty, is cannibalizing itself and hurting the overall product. There need to be guardrails instituted. Or else the product and interest in the sports will continue to deteriorate. College basketball is facing real trouble, imo.

Can’t say that in football(draft eligible is 3 years out of high school and overseas is non-existent) and the Supreme Court will blow up any guardrails that aren’t collectively bargained. No question that it is an absolute cluster

Absolutely no, not at this time. If we get into fall camp and haven't picked up 2 QB's from the portal then maybe you have this conversation, but not before fall camp.

I have always believed we need 4 scholarship QBs, so we need two right now.
  • Find the best QB out there; one who understands he would likely be QB3 in 2023 but the competition for 2024 and beyond is wide open.
  • I'd look for a grad transfer who can benefit from the academic opportunities at Cuse. This would be QB4, an insurance policy.
  • After the 2023 season we need to bring in 2 more QB's to replace Shrader and the grad transfer insurance policy and get to 4 on the roster.
    • 6 of the 7 QBs we've offered for 2024 have already committed elsewhere and the seventh is small (6', 185 lbs.).

This thread is about Lamson and therefore about the QB position, but I also believe we need the following.
  • 2 offensive linemen. As the o-line goes so goes our offense. Currently we have 13 scholarship OL. We need two more to get to a three deep across the board. Two now and two more after the 2023 season when Bleich and More are gone.
    • We need at least one OL who can compete immediately for playing time. And one younger OL who can contribute or at the very last projects to develop. I think we have 5 RS So OL on the roster, so we do not need another OL who is a RS So.
  • 1 CB, we only have 5 scholarship corners (1 Sr, 1 So and 3 RS Fr) for 2023 unless we can add one from the portal. This position group is young so preferable an older player, with some size who can compete for playing time now. We don't need another 5'11', 175 lbs. corner.
  • 1 RB who can contribute now. Price has yet to show he can produce on the Power 5 level. The two freshmen are both small, light and could use a year in the weightroom before they are expected to contribute.
  • 1 Safety. A RS Jr who can contribute on special teams now and compete for playing time in 2024.
    • Simmons is a Sr and will be gone. Barron and Clark could be tempted with leaving early for the NFL (I'm hearing whispers) or for better NIL arrangements (Carter and Duece). I really hope they learn from Jones and Tucker and stay thru their senior seasons.
    • The worst-case scenario is all three are gone before the 2024 season which would leave us with Greenwood, Oliver, Folk, Gould and Perry as the scholarship safeties (5). to maintain a three-deep we would need to add 4 four guys after the 2023 season or 3 if we add a safety to the mix now.

How many open scholarships do we currently have, 6 or 7?
