Class of 2021 QB Kaidon Salter (TX) Portal to Colorado

Salters drop % was 2x as high as Kyle's this year (12% v 6%) and would bring Salters Completion % to 67% if they were all caught (Salter was 71% last year)

For comparison, Kyles would have been 75% this year and 74% last year without the drops!

Salter was similar in turnover worthy plays and actually had a higher big time throw % and higher average depth of target
Awesome thank you!

all this Salter debate will be moot if he leaves Boulder as a Colorado Buffalo. They can sell the upcoming likely number 1 pick in the draft and, while not a QB, the current Heisman winner and likely first non QB to get drafted.
And Deion can get him a good deal on insurance.

except they have top 10 QB recruit coming in who thinks he has the job too
I know that’s what his ranking says but have had some friends down here watch him who think is a bit overrated

All that matters is whether Salter thinks that might create a great chance of competition and thus not starting, compared to coming here.

Totally fair point. Perception is everything ...

I wonder how much McCords depth of target number changes if we have an average running game. So many of his short passes were run replacements. I also wonder how much pass protection and QB mobility play into that. Kyle was great at getting rid of the ball quickly to avoid getting sacked and mobile quarterbacks that keep broken plays alive often end up getting big plays off of those as the defense loses track of WRs. There are so many factors that feed into the numbers.

Both teams can make strong cases. We can argue that McCord went from a percieved weakness at Ohio St to the primary reason our offense was as good as it was after coming here.

19. Kaidon Salter, QB

Transferring from: Liberty
Seasons remaining: 1

HT: 6-1 | WT: 200 | Class: Redshirt junior

Background: Salter led a historic season for Liberty in 2023 with a 13-0 run, a Conference USA title and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. He earned C-USA MVP honors in his first season operating coach Jamey Chadwell's spread option attack. The Flames couldn't match 2023, falling to 8-3 season this fall, but few QBs in this portal market have more proven dual-threat production. The former Tennessee transfer has put up 5,887 passing yards, 2,013 rushing yards and 77 total touchdowns with 31 turnovers in his career. Colorado and Syracuse have emerged as contenders.

Scout's take: Salter is crafty, makes a ton of plays off platform and can make things happen on the move. He can be incredibly accurate on small-window throws down the middle of the field. -- Luginbill

This is from Sports Illustrated's top 50 players at all positions in the Transfer Portal and lists Salter as number 19. With Weigman, (he was ranked lower than Salter) and has committed to Houston, Salter may be our best choice given those QB's who remain undeclared. Anyone know anything about a QB who is out there who would like to come play for SU. Of course, he would have to have an arm, smarts and leadership like Kyle. Maybe he isn't out there?

I'm surprised that Prime and his staff didn't think the same.

Kyle was 4th in the country in LEAST amount of time to throw, confirming your instincts

Also you state some good reasons, I would also say that the lack of a deep threat (Zeed) made our short game more necessary, not to mention a still leaky OL (albeit better than past years)

Kyle was middle of the pack in the ablity to avoid sacks when pressured, even though he is probably at the bottom in terms of mobility

I had forgotten about losing Zeed. We did go deep more when we had him.

Not sure it had to do with Zeed. We went to a very quick release passing offense after game 3 when we realized our line couldn't block long enough and our OT's couldn't stop an outside pass rush against the low level play of even Stanford. They had 4 sacks, 3 PD's and 2 pics and we only scored 24 pts against a pretty bad team. Everything was quick throws after that. And after the Pitt game where their LB's and DB's played shallow on everything and jumped all the short routes, I was worried that every other team would follow suit. Somehow that didn't seem to happen though. I still don't know why. I would have rushed 4 or 5 every time and covered everything short. Sure we may have broken a play for a long TD here or there, say on 30-50% of our drives, but otherwise we got TD's at a much higher clip than that. Plus we would have had more turnovers for sure, see the Pitt game. I felt like our opponents didn't watch the Pitt game film.

Yep and I think it speaks to how underrated Pena really was because he would break those 5 yard hitch routes for an extra 15-20 yards each time.

I am sure we have our own sales pitch too.
