Class of 2023 QB Rickie Collins (LA) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (12/20/24)

Do we know though? We saw what we had in 2023 and it was terrifying. We have no idea about JW. Johnson, who i don’t view highly at all, was the back up the entire season.
I think what's important is that we trust the coaches to know. As fans, we're never going to know how good a new guy is until we get to see him and in college sports there are always new guys. We had no way of knowing what we had prior to 1990 or 1995, but because of our success prior to those seasons we just trusted our coaches would anoint the right guy.

Ultimately, it's a bit of a crapshoot no matter who you are. We've seen factories march out elite rated QBs that fell on their faces.

I've been told I'm an adequate poster.
thats not entirely accurate.gif

Phicox one year as a starter - 16 TDs, 11 interceptions, 188 yards a game on 60% completions. Like I said, part of a good team, but hardly an all-time great at Syracuse. Just like Danny Schayes had a long NBA career; that doesn't mean he was great at SU in his 1 year as a starter.
Taking the era into account, (2 wide outs, run heavy) these are solid numbers. If you look at Heisman runner up Mcphersons stats for JR/SR year combined, Philcox was much more accurate, and had about the same ypg and TD/INT ratio.

This is one of my issues with how people view the transfer portal; as a means to always populate your roster with proven commodities. Yes, it’s helpful to jumpstart a coaching tenure and to fill gaping holes. But watching guys come in and develop and grow into the next guy is one of the joys of college football.

If they stick around long enough.

That's why Fran is looking for measurables, speed, size, character to build a base from the ground up. That's why high school is important, in the northeast a lot of good athletes who can be coached up.
You need to create the depth so that the players who are 2nd team become plug and play.

The "journalism profession" has to start adhering to the established practices. The problem is, the true journalists are competing against the journos that just try to scoop everyone without recourse for jumping the gun.

Social media has destroyed journalism.
Come to think of it, the media has destroyed journalism.
And the Internet.

If he”s looking for miserables this board is a good place to start

That year was great, it felt like we would take a step back, but Philcox kept us strong.

Yes, he was a game manager, and very good at it.
But he wasn't asked to carry that offense. He had Robert Drummond, Michael Owens and Daryl Johnston to run the ball. Rob Moore was the featured WR, and we also had Deval Glover and Pat Davis was a pretty good tight end.
We topped 30 points 6 times, while only giving up 17 points a game.

Fran made a point to say that trait that he’s looking for from a qb is “winner.” Can he feel confident on that point with a guy like Collins who hasn’t proven anything? I don’t have a pov, just trying to piece together what might actually happen.
The will to win. Dungy and Shrader had it and DeVito didn’t

For the record the post you quoted was taken out of context. I was saying you can’t be concerned about young QB’s we already have in the program. You have to bring in as many QB’s as possible and make sure you have the best QB for the program. You don’t worry about hurting the feelings of a QB who is in the program but has yet to take a snap or another who hasn’t even taken a step on campus.

The second part of your post will be tough to do in the current CFB landscape. That used to be my favorite part as well, but now guys are more hired guns, especially at QB.

Ive re watched LSU’s spring game. Collins has great arm talent but he needs development.

Just from watching the spring game it looks like he can throw the ball off platform pretty well but he has happy feet in the pocket. He tucks and run after his first read is taken away. Tends to throw off his back foot at times. Didn’t complete his down field throws but was accurate on swings and boundary out routes. Good arm talent and athleticism. He has off script play making potential. All this can improve with coaching and repetition.

If no McCord then we have 3 young talented guys that will battle it out. Could be a transition year. The following year we will have an experienced starter
