Hang on, hang on, at what point did Collins start getting referred to as a dual threat or running QB again?

That's not what he is.
Speaking ojoy for myself, when I say Collins is dual threat (or anyone else,on SU for, that matter), I am not saying if he ends up starting, we are going to have 10-15 designed running plays for the QB called each game.

I think we all know the Syracuse offense is built around a backbone of RPO plays. These plays are designed to make the defense choose to account for the QB running and gamble some on less pass coverage, or focus on pass coverage and dare the QB to run.

We all know Kyle passed it on these plays the vast majority of the time. Sometimes the run was there and he chose not to take it. It didn’t really matter. He was so good at getting the ball into tight coverage and wasn’t great at running it so it made sense and worked anyway.

In a perfect world, I think coach Nixon wants a QB who can take the run option when it is there and get a sure big positive yard gain. Guys who can pass as well as Kyle can are rare. Guys that throw it well (but not as well as Kyle) but who can run better than Kyle) are easier to find.

If Rickie plays for SU, I don’t expect him to run it 20 times a game but would expect him take the run option more than Kyle. He isn’t going to run for 100 yards in a game but his athleticism would bring something new for defenses to worry about.

i think one of the best things about the Nixon offense is the flexibility. It is cool we can recruit QBs with a variety of skill sets and be successful.

I think it is crazy that many here think this kid is a panacea. He is not a McCord with a proven season under his belt. His vids looked mixed to me.

I do not even see how anybody could assume one way or the other that he would be better or worse than will be Rikki.

McCord was a real outlier in terms of a pocket QB having success at the Cuse. Other than him our best recent successes has been with the "warrior" dual threat QBs such as Dungey and Shrader. DiVito as a pocket QB was highly rated and a huge flop here.

I think Rikki fits the mold better in terms of our recent QB success stories as compared to Angeli.

So for my money, I would certainly not undermine Rikki for this kid, though if Angeli wanted to come with the understanding he is COMPETING for QB2 against Williams I would certainly love that.

Rikki should be QB1 at this stage of the game and it will then be up to him to hold onto the job through performance (or not).
To be fair De Vito spent most of his time on his back. Not in the pocket. I would call the OLine a flop, not De Vito.

The O that i have been watching is geared towards three reads.
1: Run if the box allows it
2: Vertical routes
3: Check down to the RB

The second option the vertical routes are all based on the WR and the QB being on the same page. Both have to read the coverage and run the proper routes. Kyle and last years O was very smart. Pena was very well coached and made excellent reads all year long. Meeks was the same. OG very solid. Dan wasn't very good with his reads and the rest of the receivers were ok.
Nixons offense is based on being smart. It takes what is given and it was a vertical O that wanted to move the ball through the air to set up the run once the box got weak.

That is what they want to run. Not so much a traditional RPO that uses the QBs legs but more of a passing O that runs when it is there and uses the check down as a running option.

In order to run this O, you have to have a QB that makes quick, good decisions and is accurate with the ball as it is all about the read. You also have to have WRs that make quick good decisions. My two cents is that Rickie has all of the physical tools but is going to need time to make this O hum. I believe that the ND kid is looked at as being ahead in his ability to make the proper reads and throw an accurate ball. Take it for what it is worth but that is what im seeing.

To be fair De Vito spent most of his time on his back. Not in the pocket. I would call the OLine a flop, not De Vito.

Since this is now a Utica thread I remember Larry Costello (HOFer and former Nat) coached some Utica College team the played SU in the dome in 83 or 84. I love Karam's Middle Eastern Restaurant in Yorkville and there was a Grimaldi's there for a while. Pop: 66K. All I got.

That was on Bagg's Square, if I remember correctly. You were probably on your way back to Rt 12. Bagg's Square is the birthplace of the city, but fell in to difficult times. I think it's better now.

Bagg's square has undergone a LOT of gentrification. Not nearly the abandoned hell hole it used to be even 10 years ago. And I think where Peepers used to be is now where Utica Coffee is located (and if you haven't tried that, do yourself a favor and do it.

Back in my day (50's) Utica had an identity. Italian mafia and the "Sin City" of the east. Gateway to the Adirondacks. More than a few entertainment and sports celebrities over the years. Dick Clark, Annette Funicello, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Wynn, Bobo Salerno, Andy Van Slyke, Dave Cash, Robert Esche, Will Smith just off the top of my head. Politics and taxes killed it and the anchor businesses all eventually moved on.

But my point is this kind of plays into the whole "mishandling" discussion. If Fran personally felt that Rickie wasn't good enough, he never should have put that comment out there (and attributed it to Pena). Now, people on here now have a preconceived notion about Rickie being good enough.

I feel like the nuance is lost on some, but I also completely agree with the premise with "if he's not good enough, find someone who is and bring them in". But some players also might feel that Rickie deserves a chance to show what he can do and he's "their guy".

Fran will make mistakes and that's okay. It's not a binary argument.
I dont think Fran did not think that Collins was good enough. I think he did.

I think Fran sees an opportunity to try and upgrade his roster even more.

Cant hate on that.

You forgot Rufie Ventura!

You ever been to South Bend?

Outside of campus, the place is Utica.
Don’t forget the alcoholism! I’m all for good tailgate. But a liter of Jameson for breakfast is where I draw the line.
