Is there any reason to be concerned that Angeli couldn’t win the ND starting job this spring? I don’t know anything about who he was competing with, so I ask sincerely.
I’m actually excited that he looked at our depth chart and wanted to come in and compete for the spot in the Fall with Rickie already here. Love the confidence. Hopefully they’ll feed off each other and we’ll have a much stronger QB room as a result.

And if someone one misses action don't have to play someone not ready yet.

I don't think so.

Notre Dame didn't really consider Angeli to be "part of the plan" I don't think. They just have a different vision for what they want from their starting QB, and Angeli isn't it. But he messes up the plan somewhat because he was good enough to be a solid QB2, but because of the vision they weren't ever going to move him to QB1.

Optics matter for a school like Notre Dame. The vision is they want either a) a high flying portal QB someone already developed for them ie Leonard or b) an uber highly ranked prep player they feel comfortable starting soon after they join the program ie Carr.

Angeli hit his ceiling there.

And not for nothing - when they buy a QB, they buy a QB $$$. That’s a a lot of NIL investment and pressure to not make that work.

I’ve been watching this unfold pretty quietly but I’m super confused why some people are acting like Ricky is now an after thought and this kid is the next McCord. Maybe I’m missing something? I’m glad he’s here… I just don’t get the hype? He got beaten out by a QB who has thrown for 4 yards in his college career. Competition is good and maybe he wins the starting job, I want the best player to play but the situation feels more Drew Allen than Kyle McCord.
Because Angeli has looked great in his admittedly limited experience. Collins is a mystery that no one knows anything about. Also Angeli looked sharp at the end of the second half against Penn State in the playoff.

Collins? Again, a mystery.

A little trivia: the kid that apparently has won the ND QB starting job is CJ Carr. He is the grandson of Lloyd Carr, the former UM HC. From what I can determine, he has a really strong arm but struggles some with accuracy.

Angeli‘s strength, based on what I have read, is his poise and accuracy.

If Steve wins the starting job, that game in South Bend is setting up as being very interesting.

Cant believe he doesn't have some guarantee of starting. However he is not Kyle McCord and won't have that long a leash IF Collins can play.

It was always going to be interesting.

Honestly I think not playing in the spring game is really hurting the perception of Collins.
It definitely hurts my perception of him. I'll list my reasons for not being excited about him, they are as follows;

1) He was radio silent about transferring here, probably because of the McCord draft being up in the air. Still, it felt not committed.

2) Didn't play in the Spring Game. Though I understand why (especially now), I can't get excited for a player I can't see.

3) Thumb surgery is a concern.

4) Angeli by comparison seems more plug and play for our current offense.

5) Is he a better dual threat than Jakari? I honestly don't know, but it's my understanding that Fran likes Collins for his arm.

Axe was saying that Collins had surgery on the thumb on his throwing hand, expected return in June.
Imagine if that happens during the season too.

That thumb injury although not exciting now and he’ll be back before it matters still may have been a wake up call for alot of people.

We can’t roll out what was in the room for our QB2 against top 10 teams on the road.

We have to keep both Rickie and Stevie. Call it an insurance plan against the toughest schedule we’ve ever seen.

Please name the times.
It’s been a running joke here for years and years. Pick pretty much any season going back to the mid 2000s and you can fine someone(s) saying “our QB room has never been deeper!”.

Needless to say, that’s rarely been true.

Not a slight against you. It’s just a near annual tradition
